Remember, Mary wrote in her book that Berry Gordy asked if she wanted to be apart of it. But, she said declined stating she needed some time off.
@jackanthony9766 жыл бұрын
Gordy was only messing with Mary's head. Gordy had no intention of using Mary on Love Child whether she went on vacation or not. Gordy hadn't used Mary or Cindy on any single release since Florence was fired, so why would he use her for Love Child? Mary and Cindy were not on Forever Came Today or Some Things You Never Get Used both of which were released prior to Love Child. Nor did Gordy use Mary or Cindy and any subsequent release after Love Child while Diana was in the group.
@s.rhockenhull11685 жыл бұрын
Exactly. He was blinded by his obsession (which he'd admit to in his memoir) that it was eating into the interior of the group. Still, I prefer this performance over the Andantes anyday. Mary and Cindy's backing is more smoother and polished sound.
@DetroitLives3134 жыл бұрын
@JACK ANTHONY See that is where you are wrong. He had no choice . It was in each Supremes contract that they could not be replaced on records or in performance. Mr. Gordy got his ass sued in 1978 by Miss Wilson and that clause in her contract helped make her case very strong!

Exactly fifty years ago today on November 24th, 1968; "Love Child" by Diana Ross and the Supremes moved into the #1* position on Billboard's Top 100 chart, it remained at #1 for two weeks... It reached #2 {for 2 weeks} on Billboard's Hot R&B Singles chart, the two weeks it was at #2, the #1 record for both those weeks was "Who's Making Love" by Johnny Taylor... Between 1962 and 1976 the Motown trio had forty-five records on the Top 100 chart, twenty made the Top 10 with twelve reaching #1... They just missed having two more #1 records when both the above "Reflections" and "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me" peaked at #2... * The record it knocked out of the top spot on the Top 100 chart was "Hey Jude" by the Beatles, it had been at #1 for nine consecutive weeks...

Too bad that Gordy and Ross didn't give a rat's ass about what the fans wanted. The fans did not ask to have Flo fired to further Ross's solo career.

Why did Diana Ross record this song without her team mates Mary and Cindy? This is just another example of how Ms. Ross wanted all the glory for herself.... by consenting to record this song without her group members. If Flo had still been with the group when Love Child was recorded, Flo would have been shuttin it down in the background. Instead, Ms. Ross recorded the song with anonymous back up singers who twenty years later were identified as the Andantes. I guess Ms. Ross wanted to prove that she did not need the Supremes and that she could be part of a number 1 record without the other two Supremes singing on the record.
@TGTSTS7 жыл бұрын
Do you really think Diana called these shots? Good grief. It was Berry's decision. Berry had been substituting other groups with the Andantes for a long time. The Marvelettes, the Vandellas - even the Four Tops! I hate that the Andantes were used as sweeteners to the groups, but by the mid-late sixties these groups were traveling so much it just made things so much easier. Plus, as Mary admits, she was on vacation when this was recorded. Just as the Christmas album was recorded with the Andantes when Mary and Florence were on vacations, as well.
@knockshinnoch19507 жыл бұрын
This happened with so many groups- Ringo Starr didn't play drums on a few Beatles hits and the Beach Boys and Four Seasons had an interchangeable number of performers who "sweetened" the recorddings, The Bluenotes didn't sing on their records- only Teddy Pendergrass sang lead- same goes for the Stylistics. Phil Spector used Darlene Love and the Blossoms for a number of groups including the Crystals It was very common during the 60s! It was also common for fake versions of the groups to tour and con fans!
@jackanthony9766 жыл бұрын
I think Diana Ross called many shots...she had Gordy's ear after all.
@jackanthony9766 жыл бұрын
Yes, I know. That is why I don't bother learning the names of group members any more or even bother to garner any interest in group members whatsoever. The record is what it is and I don't care who is on the record anymore. It doesn't pay to care. The final straw was when I found out that the Mary Jane Girls didn't sing on their own records with the exception of one girl. I remember I bought a Mary Jane Girls album with the photo of each girl prominently displayed on the album cover as if they sang on the album. When I found out that only one girl sang on most of the songs I lost respect for them as artists. They obviously were selected for their look rather than for their actual singing talent. It's like lying to the record buyers which I don't appreciate.

Prefer the way they're dressed here in this performance than in their first live appearance. The other clothing, particularly worn by Diana Ross, was somewhat of a costume for a play. With these neutral female patterns, the focus is more on the music. I believe, but I am not sure, this performance was in early 1969 after the 3rd Super Bowl game when the New York Jets defeated the heavily favored Baltimore Colts, 16-7.
