Released shortly after the end of World War II, the Alan Ladd action drama "OSS" emerged as a captivating cinematic work, not only entertaining audiences but also playing a crucial role in shaping the future of spy films. The film's plot centered around agents working for the wartime intelligence agency, the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), and their exploits behind enemy lines in occupied France.
Starring Alan Ladd and Geraldine Fitzgerald, and written by future James Bond screenwriter Richard Maibaum, "OSS" features suspenseful storytelling, intriguing characters, and unexpected twists that laid the foundation for the spy movie genre we know today.

Alan Ladd also did a great WWII adventure film, China (1943), with Loretta Young, which was a significant influence on the Indiana Jones franchise. Between Alan Ladd's films O.S.S. (1946), China (1943), and the fact that his son, producer Alan Ladd Jr. greenlighted Star Wars, it's crazy the amount of influence his legacy has had on huge franchises like James Bond, Indiana Jones, and Star Wars. Great video, Cinema Cities, O.S.S. is definitely an underrated Alan Ladd classic! Thanks for shining a spotlight on it.

@@CinemaCities1978 Because of Ladd's outstanding presence as Nevada Smith in 1964s The Carpetbaggers starring George Peppard a prequel about Nevada Smith was produced but had to star a younger actor - Steve McQueen. Radio -film and animation ( most notably Rocky and Bullwinkle) voice actor Paul Frees was also an O.S.S. operative during WW2. For me O.S.S. is not forgotten because that was my first Ladd film I saw on The Late Late Show ; it was a Saturday sometime between 2-3 a.m. 😄i recall the hour because that's usually when my local Late Late Show channel played movies I wanted to see. I read a biography on Ladd that described his close friendship with William Bendix, star of radios and later TVs Life of Riley series and who costarred in The Blue Dahlia. In later years their friendship ended over some misunderstanding.

I used to live in Palm Springs near Alan Ladd's home in Las Palmas. There is a plaque on the wall surrounding the house. He made all of those performances, yet kind of didn't know and thus suffered and died way too young. I would ride my bike, see the plaque, and every time say, "You were great, Alan!"😅

Ladd never got enough credit, he could act with the best of them ... BUT what I really wanted to say is that Veronica Lake was a petite jewel, really "The Peek-a-boo Girl" --- think of a deep dive on her career, which was quite good but deserved a few more meatier roles.

My mom loved Alan Ladd, when you see scenes where his shirt is off you'll see why. I like him as a leading man. One of the benefits of him working with Veronica Lake was that she was tiny so no apple box was needed in scenes with her. I was surprised watching The Reluctant Dragon and seeing Ladd briefly playing a Disney animator.

Great video! I adore Alan Ladd and he is DEFINITELY underappreciated and underrated. He gives such a beautiful performance in The Blue Dahlia (another great noir of his); his grief when learning his son has died while he was in the military is subtly yet movingly rendered. I haven't seen OSS, wasn't even aware of it, so will have to check it out. It sounds like it was a serious and gritty look at wartime espionage, and the Bond connection is fascinating. Forgive me in advance if you've already mentioned that the director, Irving Pichel, was a character actor -- and a very busy one -- in the 1930s. Last week I was watching the film, Wild Girl (1932) with Joan Bennett, and he was in that. I was struck by how similar his face and voice resemble actor Victor Jory. I once met Jory at a film retrospective in the early 1980s. But I digress.

"O.S.S." was regularly shown on KTLA-5 in Los Angeles during my childhood and adolescence (1960's and 1970's). I think Ladd was a good actor as long as he stayed within his image. He was best at playing mysterious loners with his ability to convey much with little dialog. Sort of like Charles Bronson. If you watch "Shane", you'll be amazed at how little dialog he had in that movie and how little time he actually has. Yet, his presence is always there. The video mentioned in passing a little known Gary Cooper movie "Cloak & Dagger". It's rarely shown, but it's an excellent, realistic depiction of the OSS. There's a brutal hand to hand to the death fight which would not be surpassed until "From Russia With Love" with a similar fight in a confined railway compartment.

Alan Ladd is probably my favourite actor who came out of the pre 1950's Hollywood studio system. He just had presence and acting style that still seems fresh in the 2000's era. Of cause like most people, it was watching Shane on television that really made me a huge fan of his and is still for me the quintessential western hero on celluloid.

Wow, thanks for such a great shoutout! It’s wonderful to see more discussion of deeper catalog titles that just haven’t gotten proper recognition or simply haven’t been available for years. OSS is an incredible surprise when seen the first time but becomes so much more when you know its pedigree and find out about the people behind it. There’s so much of Ladd’s screen persona in Bond that the film he and Maibaum went to the UK to make, The Red Beret, brought together the nucleus of the Bond production team.
@CinemaCities1978
@CinemaCities1978 Жыл бұрын
You're welcome! Have you seen Maibaum and Ladd's other OSS film, Captain Carey, USA? It's been years since I've seen it, so I can't recall specifics, but I do remember the 'mole' element of the story. I wonder if the Bond connections are obvious in that. Captain Carey is also a more romantic and drama-driven story than OSS.

Crazy memory jog. I remember one part of this film. I must have seen it when I was a lad of 10 or 11. The only scene I remember is when the NAZIs grabbed one of the spies for using his knife and fork improperly. I don't remember anything else about the movie, including the title or who was in it. This was 50 years ago. So, when I saw the scene with Ladd being taught how to eat, my brain immediately flashed to that scene in a (Paris?) cafe.
