i speak English as a second language. Dutch is my first. I watch learning videos in English because there are more of them. And every time you go 'its completely different' I prepare myself but then I'm surprised it's almost like dutch. Like the J for example. J in dutch or in Swedish is much alike

I've been learning Swedish since a week or two ago,and today I saw this video and Iand I finished watching it. This video is very funny, it made me laugh, but at the same time I remember the words more. (When I first saw this video, I wasn't sure I could fully understand the content, as my native language is not English,so maybe there is some mistake with my English grammar :(((, I was surprised that it was easier to understand than I thought) Thank you for making these videos, I love them :))

Omg I know this is a relatively old video, but it really helped me a lot! I was stuck before even I started to learn Swedish, since there’s SO LITTLE materials online. I searched on Google and on Chinese internet and I couldn’t find any helpful stuff for beginner. So really I appreciate this so much, the production value is making me tear up 😭😭😭

Some English words like boat and coat were originally pronounced with two vowels [o]+ [a]. During the great vowel shift they merged into a single [o]. There are texts in which they are written with a letter similar to “å”, but the “oa” became the standardized spelling. When I studied Swedish, the alphabet was fairly easy to handle, but it was the combination of sounds and their spelling that was most difficult to learn: “sjutton sjösjuka sjuksköterskor” (seventeen seasick nurses)…🙄

⚠️ 1) The letter Q is almost never used at all in swedish. Exception: qub (cube) 2) The letter Å is pronounced like an O, the letter Ä is pronounced like an E and the letter Ö is pronounced like the letters O and E. 3) The letters Q, W, X and Z aren't used a lot in Swedish.

Also, Swedish has 3 words that are just a single letter, those are i, å, ö. I, means in, 'I Sverige ' 'In Sweden' Å, as mentioned means small river, 'Ån är vacker' 'The river is beautiful' Ö, means island 'Det är en ö därborta' 'There's an island over there' Lastly there's a really hard sentence with these words even swedes have a hard time understanding, I will write it out in dialect, then standardswedish and english:) I åa ä e ö, å i öa ä e å. I ån är en ö, och i ön är en å. In the river there's an island, and in the island there's a river.

From slovenia learning swedish, the alphabet is very simmilar. For example A, E, I, O, U (the only letters in my alphabet that don't make that weird ' sound) sound the same in slovenian alphabet as in swedish alphabet. Will be easy for me to learn it tho :-)

Most of the time, when you see the letter G in Swedish, it sounds like /g/. But does it also sometimes sound like J as well, like in English? Occasionally, you will see a GJ combination, which is pronounced like the J.

Sadly there are several rules. The average swedish person doesnt know the rules of course. G usually sound like J before: E, I, Y, Ä, Ö, so "right now" is called genast in swedish and is therefore prononced jenast. Walked is called gick and pronounced jick, and so on......the city of Gothenburg is named Göteborg and pronounced Jöteborg.

Thanks a lot. Few things are quite surprising compared to dutch. One: vowels are just used by themselves, which makes its simple. In dutch we have a lot of combinations (ie, ei, au, eu, oe etc). Two: you miss the "au" sound. What noise do you make when imitation a cat, or hurting yourself?

Something I do is watch song videos in Swedish with Swedish subtitles and try to pronounce with them. Victoria Maggio is good. Sometimes the pronunciation is softened and more like the english.

Some names are Swedish, others aren't. We're somewhat influenced by the English language, believe it or not. And some names are just from other countries, like for example Maggio.
