La Marzocco apparently loves to make mini versions of their commercial workhorses. First it was the Linea, and now it's the Swift. The Linea Mini has become somewhat of a home barista icon since its release, but will the Swift Mini live up to mini moniker? In this video I'll put it through its paces to see if it really does up the home espresso game.

@@Sprometheus It really does, as you stated in your video, nobody who is on the level to spend that money on a coffee related item would really need to use it. They would already have a routine they do with their machine. And hobbyist like me would find it hard to spend $2500 on a high end machine and grinder.. and cups, and a nice tamper and coffee towels, and beans for a few months and a nice milk frothing jug to even think about adding this machine to the mix haha. I think this might be more for coffee shops that have low to mid level traffic who won't mind having domestic tier gear with no warranty to fall back on, if it helps them because of high tern over and lack of training the staff. Places like hospitals, small family run cafes and restaurants. Things like that where $2500 on a more stable and consistent coffee product is ideal.

I don't think the Swift Mini is for an enthusiast. It is the companion grinder for the wealthy person that bought a Linea Mini or GS/3 because it looks cool. This really doesn't seem like a La Marzocco product. Most of their branded grinders are goofy looking. This seems like a Rube Goldberg designed Baratza. Mazzer conical burrs are 63mm and 83mm for the Kony and Robur. The Swift Mini's burrs are mini in comparison. I wonder what the PSD is?
@Sprometheus
@Sprometheus 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah it does seem aimed at that market, which is a bummer. And I agree, it’s not the best looking grinder and has none of the classic style charm that you’d expect from a LM product. In terms of the burrs those 63 Mazzers are what they use in the Niche and they are fire. So it seems like LM likely handed this concept over to Etzinger and they used the parts they had available.

It's a little more tricky with the Swift than it was with my old Mazzer. You can only grind when a portafilter is locked in. Since the way the beans are dosed into the conical burrs vs the flat burrs of the Mazzer it didn't seem all that necessary to do. Plus with only 16 stepped adjustments there just isn't a lot of adjustments needed, or possible really.

Not sure about other countries, but here in New Zealand several large roasters offer lease deals on LM machines if you buy their beans, so for a restaurant (for example) where coffee is their primary interest, but that still want easy, reasonable-quality espresso, I can see this working well. There's also a noticeable shift here to more automation in cafes in metropolitan areas, probably as the result of city rents driving down wages and margins, so automating as much of the workflow as possible takes a degree of skill out of being a good barista.

For that price point, the grinder should have been able dose gravimetrically (i.e. by weight). A 0.9 gram variance at the max can make a pretty huge difference in your extraction, which I think is shown by the variability in how your shots pulled. For less than $2500, I could get a Lagom P64 (bigger burrs), Monolith Flat (perfect alignment & zero retention), or a Sette 270Wi and a Puqpress (similar functionality)! In response to your question, "Who is the target market for this grinder?" It's definitely for that small niche of people who have lots of money but not a lot of technical skill - people who own a Linea Mini, GS3, etc. for the brand and/or a e s t h e t i c s, but aren't baristas or are interested in learning about technique or theory.

I was curious about the Swift as well, even started a thread on it on the home-barista dot com forum. But when more about it was announced I reckoned the volumetric dosing is not my thing. And thanks to this video we now know it has some dosing inconsistancy like many grinders. This is something you can work with if you weigh your grinds afterwards and add/remove some ground coffee. But if the coffee is then already tamped that doesn't work off-course.... No this isn't ideal for enthusiastic home barista's. Better to get the EtzMAX instead if you like the grind mechanism.

The more and more I see of La Marzocco I feel like you’re definitely paying for the name. Why would you purchase this grinder at $2500 when for $1700 you could get the Ceado E37S with 83mm flat burrs and does every single thing this one does with the exception of distribution and tamping. It doesn’t even seem like it does that all too well. Not trying to knock your machine at all, if you’re happy with it that’s what counts, but you could buy an ECM Synchronika with PID and flow control along with the Ceado E37S (which is one of the best grinders on the market) for less than the Linea Mini alone. What does the Linea Mini gain you? I’ve heard the steam is great, but it steams at 1.8-2 bar just like the Synchronika and Profitec 700. I guess if you’re not a fan of the E61 group head it’s a plus. Also the Linea is rated so it could be used in a small cafe setting so that’s good.
@Sprometheus
@Sprometheus 4 жыл бұрын
I get what you're saying. I think there are things that La Marzocco puts out that you can tell has effort behind it. The Mini is clearly the culmination of lots of effort and time to create something that lives up to the brand and the bulletproof reliability of the classic Linea. But the Swift Mini from my view is just a lazy attempt to pass something that doesn't have any of the charm or classic beauty expected from a La Marzocco machine. Plus the lack of refinement is just frustrating for the price and for me as a huge fan of La Marzocco and what they do. I hope they see this video, and if it makes them mad that's okay. But maybe they'll remember it when they have another board meeting to design something without what feels like much if any barista input.

I'm close to pulling the trigger on a Linea Mini for home use (my wife and I daily shots and flat whites, plus visiting friends). I know the grinder is important and I have been watching some reviews, etc. The store selling the LM has the Lux D grinder which seems to have a good size set of burrs, and - considering size in a domestic kitchen seems proportionate to the Linea Mini. I've also seen good things about the Niche Zero (low retention, etc, but will its conical burrs match the Lux D's flat burrs?). I've seen the EG-1 at Weber (perhaps too much to add to the cost of the LM). Because of some comments here and elsewhere I took a look at the EK43, and while that one is expensive, it is also just too big to put in a domestic kitchen. Overkill. So, I would appreciate a heads up here please. Get the Lux D? The Niche Zero? Look at something else? I know the grinder is a really critical part of the equation. Many thanks.

Linden Wilkie both the Lux D and the Niche are great options. I used the Lux for the first 2 years of my Mini ownership and have nothing but good things to say about it. I ended up switching to the Niche about 6 months ago for a few reasons. Single dosing being the main reason, and the low retention means I am wasting less coffee without having to purge between grind adjustments. Also, I love that the Niche allows me to adjust to a coarser grind so simply for pour overs or any other form of coffee I’d like, and go right back to espresso in a blink. It’s also so much quieter, smaller, and will fit under any cabinets in a kitchen unlike the Mazzer. The burrs aren’t a huge concern to be honest. I do think there is a bit of of a taste difference, but that’s more anecdotal than proven fact. You’ll be happy with either, but in my opinion the Niche is the best home coffee grinder on the market. I did a video review of that one as well if you want to take a look.

@@Sprometheus Thanks so much for the reply. I'm pulling the trigger on these two on Monday. I have watched accessories video and will get the little funnel for the portafilter. Your rotary coffee evener, does that do the same job as another kind of pre-tamp device I've seen with a series of metal prongs on it for evening coffee? And, if it's effect is different, do you have a view on which is better? I'm glad I've found your channel and I look forward to looking at some of the other videos on it. I've also subscribed.

This looks like a really interesting product but it seems a bit like a prototype? So many things just don't seem right about it. I have also heard that the doser / tamper is very fussy with baskets depending on how rough or smooth they are on the inside. For that money I think you can get better designed grinders?

marcus annegarn it is super interesting looking, but this one is a production model so it’s hitting the streets as we speak. It did still have laser tape on it when I got it loaned to me, but I just left it on haha. I don’t have the budget for that, but even if I had, I wouldn’t buy it as a home barista. Murat Ahat yeah I feel like your average home barista and espresso enthusiast feels the same. I wouldn’t switch even if it was on the dot with dosing and all that. I don't understand the appeal anymore for a hopper based espresso system for home with such great single dose machines as the Niche for a fraction of the price. Is the weighing out of beans really so much trouble... plus for me, I enjoy scooping the beans into a doser before grinding it but that's just me.
@Sprometheus
@Sprometheus 4 жыл бұрын
You know I may have argued for the hopper a couple years ago, but now I’m totally with you. At home there is no need. Single dosing is superior in all ways except the minor amount of time it takes to weigh out your dose.
@MichaelFrontz
@MichaelFrontz 4 жыл бұрын
@@Sprometheus One more point- occasionally at the cafe I work at, depending on the dosing timers consistency, I'll have to adjust the dose into the portafilter several times, having to be careful not to disturb the puck, adding more espresso, etc. You really won't have that problem weighing beans first, and then going into a low retention single doser. La Marzocco claims they're solving that dosing problem for baristas, but it's so incredibly inconsistent- at least on your model- that it just makes a worse product rather then fixing a problem that doesn't even exist on cheaper home machines.
