I remember playing this way back in the day. Took me forever to get the alternate ending. I could get as far as the Chodak wave but could never take on all of their dreadnoughts at once. I found the key was to make sure to save the torpedo supply throughout the game as much as possible, then kite the ships in the final battle by running away from them, keeping them just outside weapons range. With a full torpedo launcher, slow down to the point they were just inside weapons range, drop a full volley of torpedoes from the rear and quickly speed up to get just outside range again, wait for the torpedoes to reload and then repeat until they die. It takes a lot of torpedoes to do this if I remember right, but once you get the hang of it the battle becomes trivial and tedious instead of frustratingly impossible.

Kudos to you for actually beating that unfair space battle. I just played the movie file from the disc to see the alternate ending.

This reviews is informative and hilarious. I knew of this game's existence, but nothing much else besides it got blasted by critics back in the day. I had no idea there were ties to A Final Unity, which is amazing, and the fact they at least attempted to mimic System Shock meant they were considerate of how to make a Star Trek game. This game may be a mess, but that last clip of Picard quoting Scotty and rescuing Spot convinced me that there was soul put into this.

Just a small tidbit of info, but the Chodak would show up yet again in the Birth of the Federation game. I think they were really trying to push the Chodak as recurring villains in these late 90's Star Trek games and they just never took off.

I never was able to solve the Mission where Data fights the plants though. And hell yeah, murdering all the romulans like if youre playing Doom was not Trek-like but fun. The next game about one of the Trek movies was the Insurrection game, which was so boring that i never completed it.

Still have the original CDs of this & many other Trek games I bought back in the day. I remember even then in '97 the FPS part felt dated, but space combat was both a big step up and far more stable than the offerings of Final Unity. Plus, still much better than the movie as you mention in the video, offered much more overall. Only minus I'd give it is making Dr Soran more like Dr Claw with his whole "I'll get you next time Picard" shtick.

The space combat was an improvement over Final Unity but still poor. I recall the Chodak ships in this having their weapons ranges reversed, with very powerful but short-ranged torpedoes and long-ranged phasers (most ships including the enterprise had longer ranged torpedoes and shorter ranged phasers). I could beat them reliably if I kept to long range and hammered them with photon torpedoes (reverse away from them to begin with since the enterprise's forward shield is its strongest, then turn and run with your faster forward velocity when they eventually start to close on you). And I remember rage-quitting repeatedly while attempting the veridian platforming segment. That was terrible, especially since you were on a timer to beat the level before the star-killing torpedo could launch and there was no saving during missions.
@BenKii3 ай бұрын
Those Chodak were very hard to defeat and the ship controls didn't make things any easier. Your fire and reverse strategy was the only way I was able to destroy one of them.
