A TEENAGER with a rare condition that causes him to shed his skin like a snake has defied doctors’ predictions that he wouldn’t survive his first year. Elio Figueredo, 13, of Tampa, Florida, was born with a still undiagnosed congenital complaint, believed to be a form of ichythosis. His condition means he makes new skin cells too quickly and loses the protective barrier that keeps moisture in his skin - but also gives him amazing superhero-like powers of healing. Elio’s unusual appearance has made him the target of cruel bullying, but he has learnt to accept his condition and now dreams of one day being a professional chef.

@@luca-jg4wq: If someone smelled like dead fish would you want to be in the same room as them? Theirs nothing rude about it as some people just can't handle certain smells. For example I has to go to the lavatory and the section smelled like vomit, I told the nurse and she had me in/out quickly so it's not rude at all. Please stop assuming everyone is being rude as we can't express our emotion through keyboards.

Elio's a strong force for sure. Such a beautiful sweet boy. Parents need to educate their children about treating others with kindness and respect. Otherwise, bulling will always be accepted.

@Beth Meyers Absolutely. In a lot of cases, the kids that bully are victims as well. It sickens me when a parent has that "Kids will be kids' mentality which justifies the bullying. Our children were not born to be bullies. This is learned behavior.

This is why kids bully one thing maybe some parents don’t teach their kids any manners and their just rude all the time . And some kids this is rare I hope but sometimes it happens when kids get bullied it’s either they been bullied before and they just want to show people how much pain they are in or it’s just their parents. But to be honest the kids who are bullying other kids their just actually bullying themselves probably because how their life is. Bullying can be stopped as long as people actually make a choice to stop. Some people don’t give a care but in reality every CHOICE YOU MAKE MATTERS. Because the choices you make creates how your future turns out to be. See this is obvious though but people still need to know this, if you keep making bad choices your going to not have a really good future UNLESS you turn it around and start making good choices which will shape your future into a great one😁

I think it’s called “harlequin ichthyosis,” which I’m assuming is a subset of ichthyosis. I watched a British documentary on it a while back. They’re really strong individuals as are you!! You got this! Also, totally unrelated, but I think your name is pretty cool lol.

Hello guys! Elio You are a strong young man and an inspiration to all. Just wanna say i have followed similar stories and there is a sindrome that maybe looks a little to what elio might have. Its called harlequin ichthyosis syndrome. I dont know, im not a doctor. Just look it up, maybe it could help. Keep that lovely energy!

Would living in a state with more color seasons more often help. I have baseball caps i don't wear. Wonder if the family would be interested. I love the boy's attitude though. Such a smart cookie.

I went to school with him this year and he's honestly not as nice as you would think, he chases kids down the halls, curses them out when they didn't do anything, take advantage of his condition and much more. I understand his story but at school he is a completely different person than he is in this video.

yo honestly I went to his elementary school, and I’m telling u he was a demon, like we tried to be nice to him because of his condition. He would cuss us out, and chase us with his skin. Btw I was the one who called him Elmo xD

I believe these children have come so far in life because of their parents/family’s positive outlook. They did not let their child being different deter them from raising them as a “normal” child.

Our research universities and pharmaceutical industry are primarily concerned with conditions that will bring profit--quick. It is deeply saddening to see the lack of understanding into his unknown condition even if his one out of seven billion. May God bless and protect him and his family.

{vyugzs vyugzs} What an asinine and naïve response. We cannot hope to know everything. The complexity of humans precedes the capabilities of any predictive computer algorithm. Even so, these algorithms are far from flawless. Plus, diseases, by evolutionary nature, are rare. Harlequin ichthyosis is so rare that its incidence rate is unknown. If this form is a rare variant of an already rare disease, how can we do research? You need an adequate sample size before you do any especially rigorous analysis. In short, we maximize research by leveraging information already known. Sorry, but that's the cruel reality. We cannot hope to save everyone. The most optimal solution? Focus on things that are better known. Therefore, effective results are more likely to be discovered in the short-term future.
