The Tesco Clubcard Data Scam | Exposed: How Supermarkets Are Making Billions from Your Data

Supermarkets profits have never been higher and yet we’re all in a cost of living crisis. Now some have said it’s naked profiteering while others have said it must be something else.
Most supermarkets work on a 1-3% margin which means they turn billions to make millions but if their profits are up… how else might they be making those sweet Benjamins? Or in the UK those sweet sweet King Charles.
It’ll come as no surprise to anyone that the profit margin on our data is much higher than food and the value of our data is only going up and has no sale-by date on it, unlike these bananas. Let’s look at why supermarkets are becoming data brokers, how much your data is actually worth and what we can do about it.

Unlike my behavioral data this video is priceless, I appreciate the effort you make in presenting tech & privacy topics and making us aware of the negative impact this regime is having in our daily lives. Privacy has became a luxury for a few.

Thank you,I really appreciate that more than I can express. Sincerely. Privacy should not be a luxury. I'm tempted to get someone on from Big Brother Watch for a sort of podcast-esk chat episode 😁

This is an extremely important and informative video. I usually care about things like this but loyalty cards are something I never even considered being malicious, because I was here thinking it was...for loyalty. But now I think about it this whole 'clubcard price' etc has suddenly come out of nowhere and every supermarket seems to have adopted something similar all at once. Appreciate the effort of actually going to shoot on location for this one, and I like how you heartlessly parked perpendicular to an actual parking space in order to get a better shot. Good stuff.

Thank you Edlandish. That's very kind of you. I do enjoy shooting outside but I hate how you're at the whim of nature. And I nearly got thrown out of Tesco's while filming it haha. Haha. I'm glad you noticed the parking. That was so everyone would go away (they didn't) and it would block my licence plate (it didn't). It's insanely clever how they've done it. It's very sneaky. And really, we have no control over it / can't stop them. Sigh. But I'm glad you enjoyed it! Thank you so much for the kind words 😁 godspeed.

The Sainsbury’s intro looks like the one at Craig leith. The Tesco looks like the one at Corsphine and hermiston gate in Edinburgh

Well spotted haha. I kept getting asked to leave / stop filming so I had to keep moving to different stores. There's also an ASDA and the Costco 😀

They've been doing this for ages, even before clubcards with stock checks and stuff. Social media does the exact same thing with Amazon too.

@@simoncaine9515 I don't agree with it ofc but I feel like people ONLY see Tesco as the enemy here. It's a bit frustrating trying to explain to people that this is happening pretty much everywhere. They should make it illegal to sell items at 2 different prices for members and just have clubcards for points (like in the old days).

They aren't even real discounts. Tesco's is selling hand towels for £9 on clubcard and £19 without. No one is charging £19 for a hand towel. In fact most are under £9.

Absolutely! It's a surcharge for not giving them your data. And it's a crime that they're getting away with it.

Three of you? The world better prepare hihi. But seriously, i use an "anonymous" card. They say i dont have to add my info to my card so it would stay private but i pay for my stuff with my bank account so that would link that card to my bankaccount. Anonymous my bum! Now, im from The netherlands and i know the laws are a bit different here but this stuff still urks me like hell.

Same! Nothing is annon (except cash, although that can be sort of traced because the purchase is so "different"/unique). It's incredibly frustrating. 🤔

To add insult to injury, not only is the increase in price for those who don't present the 'Clubcard' considerable, even the 'Clubcard price' when you do use it is still more than the other supermarket in my town. So, I rarely shop at Tesco now, it's only when I need something from the adjacent pharmacy that I go in, and that really isn't that often. [Was in there today, they've just done a major reorganisation of the shelves, so forced to hunt for things I could have walked straight to, a few months ago. Think I'll give learning the new layout a miss...]

Interestingly Waitrose has launched an app which uses VR to take you around the store... I'm not sure what data that's collecting but I'm guessing it's facial recognition again. Thank you for watching. Sorry it was a frustrating viewing haha. I hate it. I'm not sure how it's even legal. But apparently it's absolutely a-ok and so all the supermarkets now do it 🤔 See you in the next one. Godspeed 🙏

Around 2:50, it apPEARs you touch the point how companies train you how to become loyal to there brand. Even if you are offered something with less profit margin, the supermarket still made you buy in there shop. They train you with a good not to go elsewhere and compare there (other) prices or check out cheaper products. What a good little customer you are! Do you want another biscuit?

You make a PEAR of good points. I read a study recently (although it had no confirmation from TikTok in it) which said that when they launched in a new market, any new accounts had one of their first 10 uploads go viral. Regardless of quality. Why? Get that dopamine running and train you to chase the thrill of it again. So you upload more. Good user.

Correct me if I am wrong as I used to be a data broker back in the day, but GDPR makes it illegal to sell data on a 3rd party basis for contact unless it's at individual brand opt in level? Eg: RAC buy from Sainsbury's but can't cold contact unless each consumer had agreed prior to contact that the RAC could contact them. Note: this doesn't apply to countries who do not have to comply with UK / EU legislation like India, which is why Indians cold call you.
