It actually comes from an old nursery rhyme in England, it references the ghost of the minors who perished in the coal mine tunnels. The word Tommy is a reference to Englishman. Anyway the nursery rhyme reads “late last night and the night before, Tommyknockers, Tommyknockers, knocking at my door. I want to go out but I don’t think I can, because I’m too scared of the Tommyknocker man.”

Those rumors you talked about are absolutely correct Doug. Stephen King was so trashed on cocaine when he was writing this that he had to use toilet paper to stop his nosebleeds. He has admitted this himself. He has also admitted that he feels that this is the worst book he has ever written. To paraphrase him, " There's a brilliant 400 page novel hidden somewhere in these 700 pages of crap."

No, I'm not a prude or a "snowflake" with that last one, it just does nothing at all to advance the plot or characters in a meaningful way.

Such uses can be done without the permission of the copyright owner.”
@antonanderson1965

Exactly! KZfaq should reconsider its evaluation of the so-called "copyright" infringement. Unless the copyright status of the X-Files theme has recently been changed, in which even then, KZfaq would be in the wrong for flagging this video for copyright violation, as it violates the principle of prospectivity in the Rule of Law, which states that all new laws should only pertain to future events. You can't be penalized for something you did BEFORE the law was enacted. KZfaq, LEAVE THE NOSTALGIA CRITIC ALONE!! He's not doing anything wrong here.

Wait...did you NOT make up the part where they say “We’re taking him to the hospital in Derry,” and the ONLY SEEMINGLY SANE ADULT IN TOWN frantically replies, “No no no NO NO!!” That wasn’t an overdub!? There’s actually THAT high a level of self-referential meta-knowledge in Stephen King’s Maineiverse...and yet we’re expected to believe that ANYONE still voluntarily lives there!?! Who TF lives in a place where the nearest hospital pediatric ward is in the town YOU KNOW IS INHABITED BY AN ELEMENTAL THAT FEEDS ON THE FLESH OF TERRIFIED CHILDREN...and you just, I don’t even know!? Cross your fingers and hope your kids don’t ever break an arm or get croup or whatever!?

7:09 That's actually a Savannah Monitor and completely legal to own in most states. Ironically, Maine isn't one of them. For those curious, yes, you can put the larger types of monitors on leashes and walk them. Some crocadillians and tegus too. 7:07 That's a Monocled Cobra, a juvenile i think, based on the size. They're common in venomous reptile collections, since they're not as deadly as other types of Cobra and don't get as big. The REALLY stupid part is that you can see the tank it was in at 6:56. THAT IS NOT AT ALL EVEN REMOTELY CLOSE TO AN ACCEPTABLE CONTAINER FOR CARRYING A VENOMOUS REPTILE!! To transport dangerous reptiles, they need to either be in a tied snake bag within another sturdy-walled container, or be in a container within a larger container with secure lids. Either locked or taped shut. This is to minimize potential accidents, because all it takes is for the tip of a fang to get through an air hole where your finger's at. But no, that lady has a 10 gal glass terrarium that doesn't even look like it has a lid. That's not how you should transport ANY snake, venomous or no. Grab a heat pack, grab a pillowcase, put snake in pillowcase, put snake and heat pack in plastic box with a lid, poke holes in side of said box, and wrap masking tape around the middle if your especially paranoid or the snake's worth over $1000. Boom, done. Unless it's venomous, then put the snake back in it's regular enclosure and go call the exotic reptile vet you should already have in your contacts and scheduled a time for THEM to come to YOU like most smart danger noodle keepers do. Normal vets don't even treat reptiles, they require a specialist. And even then, most experienced keeps, aka the kind who would be keeping a cobra, tend to take care of their reptiles themselves unless it's an emergency. And that snake looks fine, it's not injured or sick or dying. I hate this scene so much for such stupid reasons.

Just a point of note; The "Mini series" of Tommy Knockers was only about 50% accurate. A huge chunk of it had applied "artistic interpretation" to the way the book was written and really is a far cry from the actual book. Director John Power, and Writer Lawrence D. Cohen, took what is in many ways one of Stephen kings more compelling novels, and turn it into an Abortion of silly mutation that really is an insult to the original novel which was so much better. At the end of the book, 75% of the town people died after the UFO left, and the antagonist "Roberta Anderson", gets murdered by the protagonist Jim Gardner, as they fight with one another over the ship, which he then takes control of, and in his last dying thoughts, he launches the ship (Which was more Saucer shaped in the book) into space, heading to "Altair 4", the planet where little David got teleported to. The Coke machines, in the book, only explode when someone does enough damage to them, to cause them to no longer function. In the book, all the coke machines are converted into a sort of flying sentry bot that patrols the town, crashing its massive size into any person they think are a threat to the towns people. While Smoke detectors are converted into scouting drones that fly through the air like mini flying saucers, and operate as a scouting system. When they detect an intruder, the go off with their high pitched screech, which alerts the Coke machines to the location of a threat. Deputy Becka Paulson, was having conversations with a picture of Jesus on her wall, that she would pray to every night; not the TV. Bobbi's dog was a 25lb Scottish Terrier, not a huge 300lb mutt. In the book a couple of the kids get sent to Derry on a battery run, and run into Penny wise, who winks at them and waves, and you find out in the book, that the Alien creature from the book "IT", was actually one of the survivors of the spaceship crash, who managed to launch itself at the last minute in an escape pod, which landed nearby in the town of Derry. Plus there are dozens more events, scenes and setting that happen in the book, that the movie completely overlooked, and all in all the movie is a joke, compared to the book which was far far far better. I would suggest, that you read the book and do a critique on that, and compare it against the shitty movie. Which sadly is the reality of Stephen Kings literal content, and how badly each story gets screwed up by "Artistic interpretation".

I finished the tommy knockers book recently and I read "IT" a few months ago. IT was created in the macro verse along with Matrin the turtle. He wasn't a tommy knocker. In my opinion both versions of the tommy knockers are pretty mediocre. The mini series cut out a lot of the boring digging scenes and unnecessary deaths. While the book had better characters and action scenes. At the end of the book I felt absolutely awful for jim gardner but in the mini series it was just kinda sudden. Although I do believe the book is better it's not better by much. IMO anyway

Reading the book now! The mail lady is never described as being so hot. Given her previous career as an adult actress I get the impression that the people involved in the production expanded her part to give her as much to do as possible. The child search comes after the husband is killed (and the way the kid vanishes is actually pretty spooky stuff), and it's not the TV that speaks to his wife, but a painting of Jesus that speaks to her in her father's voice. It's widely considered to be one of Kings worst books (even by King, he claims he regrets writing it, in fact), but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't enjoying it. The addiction angle really comes across, you can feel the pain of it as well. Genuinely trippy, often sad and surprisingly unsettling. Absolutely wild stuff, and given the state King was in when he wrote it, it all adds up pretty well.

You know what? I’m just going to put this out there for the critic to see. There are some rumored Stephen King stories that did make it as TV show episodes that are really REALLY scary. I’m not talking about a new mini-series. No. I’m talking about a Spanish TV show that used stories King himself sent in. It’s called Mujer: Casos De La Vida Real, and some of, if not most of them, are actually scary as well as real. Good luck sitting through the Eyeless Boy episode, or the Baby Sacrifice Episode.

Reality Subtext: King's cocaine addiction was at its worst when he was writing this. In On Writing he said he would be up late at night writing it with his pulse going a hundred beats a minute and cotton balls and Q-Tips stuffed in his nose to staunch the blood. The idea of Bobbi finding an alien technology which makes her writing become almost automatic while slowly trashing her body was, he realized later, as much a metaphor for the addiction as Annie Wilkes was in Misery (also written during that period).
