I also get asked how I read and how going to school is like for a visually impaired person.Lastly, I get asked how long I've been blind for. I explain to people that I'm not totally blind.

I'm visually impaired and I have recently come across the term partially sighted. I always get asked how far I can see, but I've been sight impaired my entire life and I don't actually know. People tend to talk to my friends rather than me. Dating is hard though. My Guide Dog is my best friend.

I like to be referred to as visually impaired. I love my guide dog Leah. Lots of people think it’s fine to come and just talk to her or stroke her, even when she’s wagging her tail, without asking me. This morning a nurse tried to steer me by the shoulders at the doctor’s surgery (meaning to help), and I asked the receptionists to put a note on the screen saying “please ask before offering help” and explained to them about not trying to physically help a patient with a sight impairment but letting the patient hold the staff’s elbow. I have useful vision so most of the time I’m very capable, particularly in familiar places.

In regard to your answer about looking normal, it's "natural habit" to look in the direction the "sound" is coming from, such as a person talking. Great video. Nice topics. Just keep in mind, the situation changes with each individual.

Brilliant. Thank you it was a breath of fresh air. I am registered blind (Albino) with some residual sight and I have a school friend from the 1950s who is totally blind and has a guide dog. She once asked someone for directions and they bent down and told the dog.

It's not a shame for me, i feel bad sometimes but i get help at school etc and with that help i've been given great help. I've got a ta who's an overqualified genius and i've got a great helper on our city's counsel who doesn't rest until everything's perfect. Thanks to this i'm ahead of almost everyone in my class

I'm glad you're doing this. You put the hardest truths so tactfully and with sensitivity to the sighted and encouraging to those of us with impaired vision. I think it also helps us communicate with sighted people with more confidence and wisdom. When people tell me "oh I'm sorry" or similar things when I tell them I'm visually impaired, I generally tell them 'You obviously don't know me very well."

Thanks. People generally hear the word "blind" and assume I have no sight at all. I say I'm visually impaiured. Most people get that. I think one thing I'd add is for people of faith to not try to get someone healed. I know people who want nothing to do with Christians because of that. They refuse to go to church because of a few people who feel the need to fix them. I've gone through it myself. I don't think anything's wrong with me. I know plenty of sighted people who can't do the things I do.

I am frequently asked this stuff on the bus, 'admired' for how I handle my vision, etc. I just shared this on Facebook and asked friends to pass it on. You rock!

I have ocular albinism with nystagmus. 20/200 in right eye and 20/800 in the left. ive been this way since birth. I get asked about glasses all the time. my doctor says glasses won't really improve my vision but will help me focus better. also people think they can take advantage of me because of my disability. I may be blind but I'm not dumb. I know when someone is using me.

Hey Emily! This video made my day. I am not visually impaired, but I had cancer at the age of 21 and I got a lot of people saying such things to me like:"you are so young, what a shame" and a bunch of things you said, but in a different context. I had never met someone visually impaired before, but you enlightened me about this subject. Great video!

One thing I'd like to say about guide dogs, and not every dog can do this, but mine found McDonalds on Fisherman's Wharf with neither of us having been there before. I'd said to him since I brought him home when going to McDonalds, "Let's go to McDonalds. Where's McDonalds" and throw in a few suggestive directives. He did indeed, walk about two blocks and stop in front of the door. Must be the smell of those fires. They're not super dogs, but they can learn to associate words with places. At least this one did.

This wasn’t actually “I don’t know how you do it”, but I was telling mmy teacherabout where I was going to college and she replied all surprised, “You’re going away from home??”like yeah what do you expect me to finish high school and community college and go no further because I’m visually impaired and it involves leaving home? One of my friends was telling her how she was going across the country for college and the teacher thought that was cool and stuff. It’s like since I am visually impaired she rxpects me to stay at home my whole life.

So there are so many misconceptions about blindness today. You'd think some of these would be completely ridiculous, but apparently not as I get them too, and my vision's only 20/180! I also get the, "How many fingers am I holding up?" and the "Oh, do you know who I am?" Or the dreaded, "What does that sign over there say then?" I hate that last one, as I usually have to answer, "Um... what sign?" or "Ummm.... I think it's R... A.... No, wait... B... A...."

I actually came across your channel from Molly and i found her channel from Lucy Yesterdayswishes. And immediately subbbed to both of you. I have vision loss in my right eye and a small loss in my left.. While i do wear glasses they dont fully help me. I am constantly told just increase the strength on your lens.

I've had people come up to me on the street and tell me that if I pray I'll be 'healed', or others say that God is cruel and hug me! People I've never met! It's really funny but a little embarrassing when I'm with my friends. I agree with this list!

When I was at henshaws I did an evening karate class. Despite being told oh visually impaired/blind people can’t do martial arts. Every time somebody tells me I can’t do something because I’m visually impaired/blind I say just watch me.

I once asked a bus driver "which number bus is this?", upon which he asked "what? can't your dog tell you?"... I flat out told him that no, my nine-month-old puppy has not developed the skill of reading numbers!

I just wanted to say i love absolutely love this video. I have several of those same thoughts. I am visually impaired and have wanted to get a guide dog. You gave me more confidence to get one. I plan on sharing your video with my groups. I have a group at the college i attended and they are so curious about fashion. They are blind and visually impaired. I have a severe wrist disorder and the biggest misconception I keep hearing is I can do everything with the other hand. That’s not true bodies were never meant to do one handed grocery shopping cooking etc.

I have watched this vid a great deal. I'm kind of a nerd. I love documentaries and reading and listening to audiobooks. I'm a visually impaired nerd. When I was younger, I was teased a a great deal. Therefore I really did good in school and read a lot of books. I still do a lot of those things and I also play video games. On my KZfaq channel I have a lot of book reviews and I've started doing let's plays.

terminology is so interesing...a D/deaf/hard of hearing person would usually consider the term "hearing impaired" outdated and insulting, but "visually impaired" seems to be the opposite. language is cool and crazy

Yes the one about getting new glasses is absurdly funny and I have gotten that too but rarely. usually I hear wow you are amazing and I ask why. I get you don’t complain about it, you are always trying to find new ways and I respond that I am well supported and just do the next indicated thing. The newest has been applying for a guide dog and being accepted. ♥️

I agree with all of this. My friend is legally blind and all these happen a lot. One thing she gets a lot if little kids asking her about her cane and saying that its scary. Not sure why... She does her make up all by herself she is 21 and is blind in left eye tunnel vision in right she also has a black spot in her tunnel so she can't see faces so people see her with her cane and her makeup done and think oh she can do her make up she's faking. Happens a lot!

I am visually impaired too. I think it is 250:20 in my right, left I forget. I have gotten some of those, they all were nice about it though, they were just curious. :) I have been asked 1 and 3. I do not mind answering them, I just try to explain it. I often get asked if I can see them, which I can. I always just try my best to explain. People are surprised too cause I do walk pretty confidently, although I do have a habit of looking down and when I use my cane not trusting it I do try on both :) Plus, my friends just know me so well and see how I am confident, they forget that I am even blind, which I guess is nice because they know me so well and that is just ONE not the only sign by far of a good friendship! :) I do only use my cane when I am at school and walking there pretty much even though i should use it more, and that could be why they forget too at times.

Hahahaha. "Won't glasses help?" All. The. Time. Even better is "what about LASIK?" I know people don't understand the science of eye problems, and that LASIK corrects the curvature of the eye whereas my vision isn't a curvature problem, but it is exhausting. I always feel awkward. I ride the bus around, but I don't use a cane or a guide dog, so it always awkward requesting the disability pass since my visual impairment isn't obvious. "I don't know how you do it" I definitely get that to not driving. I live in a city with poor public transportation but you learn... My vision is strong enough hear I can bike and walk and catch an uber or bus so it works. I live here in part because I have family that can help me go grocery shopping too.

Cannot stop laughing at the bus number thing. I just sponsored a guide dog and if they could read, I wouldn't be funding it's training but stealing it. Maybe people think they must put different scents on the bus so the dog can work out which one it is. The bus that smells of bacon takes you to the shopping centre that smells of bacon. My cousins young son is visually impaired but he's still too little for us to understand how his sight is but it will probably be the case that he needs a guide dog when he's a bit older. I hope he gets one that can read.

I am visually impaired and most of what you speak of happens to me. I think the only thing that happens to is everytime I went to a rock concerts people point and talk about what's on stage but I tell them I am visually impaired and the just say oh and won't talk to me but in one a guy described everything to me

i'm half blind so my pupils are always like, unevenly shaped. and a day has not gone by where i think about how noticeable it is, how different i look.

I have a contact lense for my left eye and it’s amazing, doesn’t give me full vision obviously but it does improve it. However that doesn’t work for all visually impaired people. Here is something for you, we have just solved my reading with contact lense in issue with some glasses I wear with my contact lense and the glasses magnify font, I read the smallest print I have ever read.

Great video! Thanks for making it :) I get number 6 all the time. It's horrific. I have no peripheral vision, and i get a lot of people waving their hands around the sides of my face to see if i'll react! RUDE!

Im 16 and iv got optic nerve hypoplasia which is basically a vision impairement that makes my optic nerves a lot smaller. This causes my eyes to get really tired and ache and hurt a lot all the time. I also have photophobia which makes my eyes react to light differently it causes pain in my eyes a lot and with both optic nerve hypoplasia and photphibia can cause my right eye to go blind temporarily. I struggle to read anything from more than 2/3 inches away and It causes headaches and a bunch of other problems. Also the hospital is finding more problems with my eyes.

I went to the hospital to see my neurologist for a check up on my out of control epilepsy on friday, I sat on a chair next to a lady who suddenly came up with oh it’s such a shame for you, I asked why and she said because your blind, I know your blind because you have a long cane. Erm noooooo I’m not blind not completely anyway love, I have a bit of vision in my left eye 2 meters blurred tunnel vision. It’s not a shame I’m visually impaired. The actual appointment however Emily, the appointment was a disaster to say the least.

It winds me up when people ask me if I wear glasses and I totally ignore them, because I feel like they’re implying I’m stupid. Why would I struggle with a visual impairment if I could use glasses?

Great video! I'm also severally sight impaired but thankfully manage to get about alright without a cane or guide dog, even though I would love to get a guide dog! Haha. I find a question a lot of sighted people ask me when I tell them I have a visual impairment is: "How much can you see then?" It is one of the hardest questions because I've had my sight loss from birth so don't know any different. Am I the one who had this asked to them? :)

I totally agree with all you said especially with the last one. WHY SHOULD I FEEL ASHAME ABOUT SOMETHING THAT I BORN WITH?! That is the biggest "Why?". Just think of this, I'm almost blind but why I should act like that is the end of the world? A lot of that is very irritating. Oh my God the dating one. Not even just at a bar but let’s say you become friends with someone and they try to use their friendship and your disability in hope that you will date them. I had that happened to me years ago when I said no I don’t remember the entire comment but he said something like we are just some angry and bitter and animosity filled blind girl with no life and no taste for I don’t member what the rest of it was. I have the right to reject you. I will honestly say I don’t like American man. I met a German who wasn’t bothered by my disability respect it and we’ve been friends since 2008 then got in a relationship and got married in 2014. I’ve lived in Germany for a while. I’ve just noticed with a lot of Americans back at home desperate enough to get in your pants when you reject them that even goes for able-bodied girls but especially when you’re disabled it’s like how dare you disrespect and reject me I have the bigger say because I’m able bodied and you’re just some pathetic little blind girl. All the more reason to dislike able-bodied American man. Sorry that’s been my experience. There are jerks everywhere but to come across someone as nice as I did was very and is still very rewarding. The other thing with make up and some people especially with facial make up. Oh you probably don’t use it because you’re blind. Actually I’ve used it only for pictures but it’s not because I’m visually impaired it’s because I get a lot of floaters and crusty things in my left eye so what would be the point of keeping on mascara for seven hours when it’s nearly impossible and I’m just gonna end up rubbing it all over my eyelids to get the floater in the Krusteaz out of my eyes? Makes no sense does I don’t use it unless it’s photos like for my wedding party or special event. Then I simply wash it off.

I collided with a tree branch I couldn’t see on friday. Hit me in my left eye so I was hey I need that left eye it’s the only eye that works. People still ask me today with regards to my false right eye can you see out of your right eye now.
