This is a 3D printed topographic world map with small lights in 55 capitals and RGB backblight. Here's how I built it! In part 2 there will be an individual light for every country and programming to indicate when someone dies or is born by blinking that light red/green.

For future reference. Use a projector to overlay any details you need on the map. If you make layers in a design packages you can swap layers to overlay any details which are easy to see. This is also a really good way to do massive paintings. As you can paint by numbers effectively. Each layer being a colour.

Great advice there, also mark some reference points along the edges and at the center in case you move the projector or the object you're working on.

Amazing stuff! Next time to do the city lights, i recommend using a Fiber Optic Bundle where you shine a Powerful light at the end where all the fiber optics are still tied together and then, place the thin fiber optic cable from behind trough the tiny hole and that will give you the same effect without having to wire individual LED's.

The original file must have been at least fifty times actual proportional elevation. For a 10ft map, Mount Everest would only be about twenty thousandths of an inch tall, or .5mm

it's a great idea and the projection looks fine! But I'm mystified about why you decided to print it in opaque gray filament all the while the translucent material looked amazing in the small scale test print.

Hey Simon, you should really look into some other LEDs. WS2812b (5V) or WS2815 (12V) paired with an ESP8266 or ESP32 as a microcontroller and WLED as the firmware. This combination will supercharge your projects LED-wise!

Dude nice job! It could be upgraded as hmm you could see in real time the weather over the world!. Put a second semireflective acrilyc sheet an inche over and with a projector, shoot the real time images of the clouds formation / weather over your map! 🤯

The best projection is the Fuller projection, also called Dymaxion. Dymaxion maps are rarely printed. It has huge advantages, it's the projection where the surfaces are less deformed, they don't look warped at all. It is also not centered on a specific country or region. It has no up or down. To me, it is a perfect projection for many projects

You adding the planes gave me a really cool idea to see if it would be possible to track major flight routes with a map like this, maybe have a strip of lights and each pulse is a little plane, also looking at flight radar this may just turn into the lights never turning off due to the amount of planes in the sky.
