To me, the Joe and the Matty bleed together because she was confiding in Matty towards the end of that relationship and he knew all of the things that she wanted from it and didn't get and he promised them to her for the thrill of stealing her away. And then she realised that he was just full of shit and it was like the same thing happened to her twice in short succession. The only song, I think, purely about Joe is really more sad but accepting because he was just too caught up in his depression, but the songs about Matty are more scathing.

There's a distinct difference in the dynamic between Joe and Matty to Taylor. Once you get hold of that, it becomes fairly easy which song je about whom hahaha. As you mentioned, the Matty songs are more scathing and turbulent.

After my re-listens I think so long London is the only one about Joe boy. She was mad mad and this album is angry and sad and confused - but she’d already come to terms with Joe being a bitch.
@emmavink28 күн бұрын
Joe was probably mostly super depressed because his long time girlfriend had been writing songs about Healy since before they got together, then all through their relationship too. I'm a huge fan of the music and generally admire Swift as a person... But it's like the lot of you are either completely blind or just refuse to listen when she tells you herself that she also hurts men. Afterglow was basically Taylor telling EVERYONE that she fked up with Joe bigtime in the first third of their relationship. And people are SHOCKED that the man probably kept some kind of emotional distance after that while still trying to make it work? Even after she still referenced Healy in songs across Reputation, Lover, Folklore, Evermore and Midnights? But she was the one who felt insecure every single day??? So she blatantly says to you all "it's me, I'm the problem, it's me... I wake up screaming from dreaming one day you'll watch as I'm leaving cause you got tired of my scheming"? Blood heck people. Joe should have insisted on couples therapy or broken up with her earlier (which was actually Taylor's responsibility because she was essentially emotionally cheating). That's the ONLY THING anyone can say against him. I don't understand the blind adoration of anyone. I'd never be able to love her music as much as I do if I wasn't able to see some of her really not nice faults. Now Healy she can shred to the wolves. That misogynist racist POS wannabe rock musician poser can yeet himself into the nearest volcano. She won a good deal of my respect back for her with the way she's hacked him apart in this album. The rest of you can leave Joe alone. He and Taylor Lautner are basically the only two exes she's wished future love and happiness for in her lyrics. You all don't get to make other judgements on that.

What I love about this album is precisely that it’s about Matty. I think that brief and disastrous relationship IS her dealing with the breakup from Joe. She felt like so much of her youth and her life was wasted, sunk cost fallacy and all that, which made her incredibly susceptible to lovebombing. It’s the addict who got clean getting their first taste of heroin after years of sobriety. It’s a love bender, full of high highs and very low lows. None of us was expecting this to be what the album was about, and I love that.

I highly recommend analyzing the summary poem she wrote for this album. It connects all the dots and are extremely insightful. Btw, there are people who are now claiming that some of the 1989 songs are about Matty. But iirc 1989 had already come out when she hooked up with him. (2014) They're also rewriting history by saying she was never really in love with Joe. The order of things as i see it is: the old flame rekindled only because the long term relationship was dying a slow death. Joe's indifference opened the doors for Matty to enter the scene. Feeling trapped and lifeless, she began to wonder what would've happened, "if one thing had been different, would everything be different today." It's a coping mechanism. In that state of mind, we over-romanticize the "what if" relationships from our past. And in Taylor's case, that old flame happened to be a part of her circle of friends/collaborators. "forever run into you sometimes, ask about the weather Now you're in my backyard, turned into good neighbors" So, i don't think it's fair to say that what she and Joe had wasn't real. She doesn't even refer to one person or the other as the love of her life. However, she does call one of them "the loss of her life." I've fallen deeply in love more than once but only one person has been the loss of my life. And it wasn't the longest relationship I've had either. Circling back to the rebound timeline, she outright described it as "not a love affair but a mutual manic phase and self harm" Him love bombing her, making promises about rings and cradles etc., it was all so easy for him to sweep her off her feet since she was in a vulnerable state. She opened up to him. And being ghosted after all that, even enduring the shitstorm she faced for dating him, it makes sense why this one hurt her more than the other. "I would've died for your sins, instead I just died inside" Anyway....I'll shut up now. Looking forward to the anthology reaction. I really adore this album and I'm proud of blondie for talking her shit.

The first time I listened to the whole album was on release day at 2pm in Australia. I cried the whole way through because I could feel her pain. Joe to Matty. Alex is correct, this wasn’t written to win awards, this was therapy for her, getting it out so she could move on. Taylor is a deeply emotional woman, like many of us, there is no way she wasn’t depressed. Touring meant she had to get on with life regardless of her heartbreak. I’m grateful she shared these songs with us, she could have easily decided to bury them.

This album/anthology is SOUL-CRUSHING because she thought she found her lifelong love in Joe but she always felt way more for him than he did for her but it was comfortable and he didn't have the decency to admit he wasn't willing to make it last. But meanwhile she'd also had feelings for Matty for YEARS and it sat in the back of her mind every time one of her relationships started to sour (Harry, Calvin, Joe) that he could still be an option, so when things finally officially ended with Joe she tried to really make it happen but then he couldn't follow through. And she had sat for YEARS still in her relationship with Joe but daydreaming about Matty and writing folklore/evermore building up this plan, these expectations, about Matty and when she then finally actually got with him it completely fell flat in comparison with her imagined life with him and the loss of the dreamy, perfect thing she'd imagined absolutely shattered her.

Thank you!! I saw so many ppl bopping along like icdiwabh was the next banger anthem and the first time I heard it, it just felt like the biggest gut punch and made feel like throwing up …it was so sad and filled me with so much anxiety

I have to say that I watched live fees of her first night in Paris with TTPD set list and OMG this song hits so much harder watching her perform it than just listening to it. She is literally pissed and you can see all her anger and frustration in her performance. At the end of all of TTPD she mentioned that it was a set list of female rage and I totally agree and it was so worth seeing on the first night.

(this is a taylor reaction so I'm gonna have so much to say omg) 1. Your hair looks sooo good 2. The way you paused fortnight immediately to mention the Hits Different lyric is EXACTLY how I listened to this album. 3. I love the feeling of being a Swiftie knowing you're about to enjoy music sonically but also be working OVERTIME making connections, googling new words and paging through old lore to make sense of new details😭it's so invigorating 4. "that ruined my life" - wait til you hear the anthology babe 5. The way this muse (the one we didn't expect to be so present on this album 👀) did a NUMBER on her; I have so many thoughts - but most of all I wanna hug the Taylor that was in the throes of writing this cause damn ms. girl was going through it.

1. Omg thank you 2. I literally couldn’t even make it 30 seconds through the first song I’m glad I’m among people who understand 3. It takes 8 listens and 5 business days to fully process for a swiftie 4. Also ruined my life 5. Dude she was hurting so bad and we talked about how much fun she was having performing. She fooled us all.

(Just for the sake of sanity Taylor didn't meet Matty until after 1989 was out for a couple months, so none of those songs could be about him)

You need to find a fan of both 1975 and Tay. I did and she knew all the clues; uses a typewriter, has a bike, called Tay his American girl, wears cheap suits, shortest member in band… There are also a lot of similarities in the look of his album to TTPD. And many, many things he said to and about Tay. This courtship started in 2014. For 10 years he has love bombed her and she built him up in her mind. Not her fault…he made all kind of promises. This is why most of TTPD is about Matty not Joe. She was deeply hurt and confused when he just left. His apology was a spray painted “sorry” at one of his concerts. Lame.
@priiifrg28 күн бұрын
He also called her " the queen'" on stage in of his shows. "Once your queen had come..." "queen of sand castles he destroys..."

Omg, love this. I got on a FB group of Tay and 1975 fans thinking I could find out about all the Matty clues . Unfortunately, they have their heads so far up Matty’s butt 🤦🏽♀️ They think he hung thee moon and he’s the one suffering bc of what the Swifties did to him 🙄 That was just a good excuse for him to bolt, they’re so delusional. I’ve stopped making excuses for men and their crappy behavior. So, they don’t appreciate my commentary or analysis of TTPD songs 😕

I do see it as two albums in the sense that Midnights was finished like April 2022, she clearly kept writing, a lot is about Joe, but Ratty does come in in points. I think folklore and evermore were ever longing but having evermore and The Lakes as the last Tracks...she stayed with joe for some reason. Midnights was her fed up, using past relationships to grieve the one she was in but again she stayed...it was only when the tour came she kinda had to leave, and fell into the nearest person which was Ratty who dipped after two weeks in the public eye 😢 The Gray and Blue and Fights and Tunnels but is literally folklore and Midnights 😢 handcuffed to the spell I was under, for just one hour of sunshine =Daylight/Lover. Florida feels like Midnights is done, she knows she will be touring and Florida was an early date on tour, she's saying in the end that she paid the price for it, the public ruined what she was creating with Ratty 😢 she is also going back to Floriday with her Miami this time over Tampa shows this year too.... There was an article awhile ago and I think Travis said that they kept their relationship private for a bit before she started attending his games, I think that's what the Alchemy is about
