Willem Blackwood is a badass, but there’s a lot more to him and his heroism than meets the eyes in House of the Dragon. This little guy showed up to try and marry a Targaryen princess, drew swords on a Bracken buffoon, killed that Bracken, and then walked away like the hero of legend we all know he will be. Honestly it’s surprising that Rhaenyra didn’t marry Willem Blackwood on the spot However I think this scene has a lot more going on than many are giving it credit for. Rather than just fan service for obsessive book fans, It’s being used to foreshadow important events, tell us more about the character flaws of Rhaenyra, and show how small moments like this can be the butterfly wing flaps that become tsunamis.

The King really failed Rhaenyra. He knew her being the heir after a son was born was going to create issues and he did absolutely nothing to prepare her, nor did he build a court of advisors to advise her. She's selfish and rude, but you have to remember She's a teenager.

Despite his own ability to keep the peace, during his rule, he failed to pass on those skills to his heir. He failed to instil a sense of responsibility in her or develop any diplomacy skills in her. His negligence in her upbringing was his biggest failure, imho. He also underestimated his brother, whom I don't think gets enough credit for his cunning. He ended up having more influence over Rhaenyra than her father did. I think he deliberately stoked the fires of stubbornness, selfishness and depravity in Rhaenyra, just to stick it to his brother for snubbing him as heir. He was going to make his brother regret his choice of choosing his daughter over his brother and he surely did by sowing the seeds of chaos and conflict.

I find it so interesting that she didn't even give a shit enough to say anything when Willem won. She could have made them a close ally without even marrying him. Just Willem knowing that the future queen realizes how he has the potential to be a fantastic warrior.

There are so many things she could have done and all of them would have been better than what she did. Even after having caused and allowed the duel, and all the consequences that followed, she could have at least tried to salvage the terrible result by acknowledging the boy and treating him graciously after his victory. It would not have improved things with the Brackens but that damage had already been done and it would have been better to at least come away from that with one ally than none. But you see this is a common problem throughout history when it comes to royalty (especially in the real world) and why, ultimately, absolute monarchy failed. They take for granted the loyalty of their subjects and therefore think they can behave, say, and do whatever they wish because they are king/queen/prince/princess and god has chosen them to rule. It's amazing to read history and see royals make disastrous, insulting decisions that turn all their nobles and peasants against them, and then they genuinely become absolutely stunned when those subjects rise against them or support a pretender. Because that ideal they're trained to believe from birth, that their blood is so important that nothing else matters, is so drilled into them that it never even enters their mind that they could push it too far and put their own against them. Its amazing and more than a little sad how many have gone to the chopping block, watched as their entire line is beheaded in front of them, and the whole time, genuinely don't understand why its even happening or how their actions have brought them to that point.

No, she found the whole ensemble boring and the exchange between the Blackwood and Bracken was just something that broke up the boredom That ended up with consequences. Viserys isn't a very good king, he's rather weak as a king and he's not properly grooming his daughter to be a monarch. So she has pretty much nothing in the way of education concerning the political science of her station. She's smart but she's not getting proper direction. Rhaenyra doesn't seem to quite understand how bitterly disruptive her potential ascension to the throne is going to be, and her father isn't helping her in that regard. She seems to be taking her cues from her uncle who was passed over for a reason. She's not making the powerful allies that she will need to ensure her succession. In fact, she's being rude and dismissive of the people that she will need the most. Power resides where men believes that it resides. She needs to make the men believe that she has power, and so far, she's not doing it.

I've thought about this right since the pilot episode. Why doesn't she have a court of her own? A young court of the heirs and other young nobles of the great houses? One of the things I noticed during HotD was that Rhaenyra has almost zero courtiers of her own, except Alicent. While it could be a flaw on GRRM's part, I think it's deliberate - having zero friends and allies from such a young age (again, except Alicent) definitely has repercussions on how well socialised she is, and further consequences on how prepared she is to develop court skills.

I'm "Team Rhaenyra" but also can clearly see her flaws. She sees the throne as her birthright as she IS her father's chosen heir but she also has to be worthy of the title. Her decisions and actions show that she has the will to be Queen but not yet the wisdom or discretion. I also agree that her father failed in his duty to prepare his heir for her future position. Viserys' love for Rhaenyra caused him to shield and indulge her but the most loving thing he could have done was to prepare her for the challenges that would be placed before her once he was dead and teach her the skills she would need to forge allies to support her claim and reign.

It is all Viserys fault. He was completely blind to how sneaky and throne thirsty Otto Hightower was, and ignored the signs, like he did frequently with Rhaenyra, towards Alicent Hightower as well. His sickness really impacted him of course but he put too much trust in people following his words. It didn't help his final words were misconstrued by Alicent but I honestly don't think it made much of a difference considering we see how much Otto had planned, and the lengths he went to even saying they should murder Rhaenyra and her children within hours of Viserys death, Otto would have likely forced Aegons coronation with or without Alicents permission. He was probably relieved to hear Alicent say she heard Viserys wanted Aegon to rule likely knowing it wasn't true at all. He didn't hesitate to start barking treason within seconds of hearing it. Out of all the Targaryens we've ever seen, true full blooded ones, Rhaenyra is by far the one with the biggest heart. A close runner up being her mother and Viserys himself.

Im team Raenera too, id rather die with her than Lick the ass of Ottos ego and treachery. People are being a bit too hard on Daemon though, true he can be a bit of a dick sometimes but he is still very loyal. He could have plotted like Otto Hightower to usurp Viseres throne. Yet he didn't, all Daemon wanted was for his brother to recognise he was loyal to him. But Viseres instead chose to be intimidated by him and see everything Daemon did for him as a Threat. Viseres would have been a lot safer with Daemon as his hand, Daemon isnt stupid and as we've seen he can be very cunning sometimes. He is very good at seeing through people and seeing their motivations. Had Viseres accepted this, Daemon would have been his hand and a lot of the problems that caused the Dance of Dragons would never have happened.

I hope one person calls out Rhaenyra before the series is over. She made no efforts to make alliances at court. And her attitude towards her suitors could have been better. Viserys could have prepped her better but in the first episode she was studying a huge history tome and Alicent mentioned a septa. As a matter of fact her own kids were being tutored as royal babies. I guess my point is she had enough of an education to know better. I wish she had taken some initiative as soon as she accepted being heir. IF Iwas the heir and a dragon rider, I would spend my youth flying across the realm, learning and making fast friends.

*spoiler* I feel Rhaenyra will get this snap back to reality soon as the Velaryon alliance breaks down. Rhaenys will die and Corlys will switch sides but I wonder what the knowledge of Vaemond’s death and Laenor’s faked murder will do in season 2 and how it will strain things. Daemon will eventually leave her and have his own mistress. Only her last son with Daemon will survive. But this story is a tragedy and I think this show is going to twist the knife a lot as it already likes to do for casual audiences. She will come so close to learning and to making better choices only for things to bomb and backfire in her face; and at the end her life she won’t get a choice.

Both Viserys and Rhaenyra think that making it her choice who to marry was a "good thing" when it fact it just allowed all the houses to be bitter about not being picked by her personally. Whereas if Viserys made the match for her, then he would be the one shouldering that and not her. The entire tour was just Rhaenyra sowing bitterness from one house to the next. And then Viserys caved and chose the Velaryons anyway, making them both targets of the ire of all the passed over lords. And Rhaenyra is not helped by her entitlement, because Viserys does not in any way prepare her to lead. We can't expect her not to be entitled, she's a dragonriding princess from the last remaining dragonriding family of the most powerful civilization of all time. But she has not been taught at all about politics, diplomacy, making alliances, and all the princely arts.

It's also showing how these actions of Rhaenyra, as a flaky frustrated teen who was not properly trained for power by her (also not very politically adept) father, are having a real effect on everyone's future in all these concrete ways. It's really highlighting the tragedy of these kids and tweens being expected to play a role in high-stakes political games. Great video!

She’s a brat and they should’ve expanded on that instead, actually make her childhood a pampered princess that’s beloved and all her actions excused by her father, show that she’s enabled and clearly preferred by her father instead of the weird “angsty daughter frustrated father” dynamics they have.

I 100% agree. A lot of reactors I've seen really love Rhaenyra's little jabs, and I do think they can be fun. However for some time I've thought that they don't show Rhaenyra in the best light politically. She has really taken after Daemon's example that she can do and say whatever she wants because she's a Targaryen and rides a dragon. While this can work in some situations, it will not work in others. Daemon himself suffers politically for the things he does and says and Rhaenyra, as the first female heir, will need even more political support than he will. That doesn't mean that in this episode she should have chosen a husband only for political advantage, but welcoming the men and letting them down politely would have gone a long way. In later episodes, older Rhaenyra appears a little more astute to her situation, but it feels like too little too late.

She's fucking up royally (no pun intended, for realz), and it's hard to watch as no one seems to be pulling her up and setting her straight. There is a reason why Westerosi history and historians don't remmeber neither Aegon II nor Rhaenyra as good and capable rulers. Both were spoiled kids who instead of focusing on how to rule focused on how to became ruler. Both were arrogant, unwise and felt entitled to do anything they want in order to get to throne. Viserys was soft and made many wrong decisions during his almost 3 decades long reign but what make him good king is that he knows that you sometimes must sacrifice personal desires for greater good or as Varys said - for the realm. Both Aegon and Raenyra lack this sense of responsibility (with lot of other crucial qualities) and they ended up how they ended up - and well deserved if you ask me. Dance of the Dragon isn't romantic story about Raenyra fighting her half brother for throne. It is lesson in how power kills people who want to weild it but don't actualy have it.

Obviously it's murder in the sense that he killed Bracken, but I don't know that Blackwood is guilty of murder in a legal sense. After all, Bracken called the kid craven. In open court, in front of dozens of witnesses, including a whole bunch of lords, a Lord Paramount and an actual princess. That's a big deal and the lad has a right to answer that insult with steel. At least in the Seven Kingdoms he does. Allowing someone to publicly call you craven is a big deal in macho Westerosi society, not answering that would be a huge mark of shame. Bracken kinda forced the kid's hand. I really like what you have to say about the scene depicting the consequences of violence though. It is very Martin-esque. George giveth, George taketh away.

Great analysis and I really hope GRRM thought as deeply about this as you have. Rhaenyra's approach to her own succession is so self-destructive. There is a scene in last week's episode where Otto Hightower drops a giant truth-bomb on Alicent as he leaves the Red Keep by telling her if Rhaenyra is to be Queen that all her children must die for the good of the realm and that she either needs to ready Aegon for the war that will come or that she must cleave to Rhaenyra and hope for ill-considered mercy. Alicent is horrified, but seems to have internalized the lesson and the need for allies. Rhaenyra has never learned this lesson. She has no allies and seems to go out of her way to alienate almost everyone.
@Maglors_grief
@Maglors_grief Жыл бұрын
But what Alicent fails to realize is that her pushing her son to challenge Rhaenyra's succession is what will get them all killed. I doubt Rhaenyra in the show would have decided to kill Alicent and her children once she became queen. Rhaenyra isn't very wise but I think even she would know that starting off her reign with killing the former queen and her half siblings would not go down well with people. Alicent is the one making herself and her kids threats to Rhaenyra's claim to the throne. If she had ignored her father's words and let Rhaenyra be queen after Viserys' death and caused no problems they all likely would have been fine. So yeah I wouldn't exactly call what Otto said a "truth-bomb" because not all of it was, he just made Alicent paranoid enough to finally stop supporting Rhaenyra. Aegon didn't even want to be king but Alicent had him claim the throne, which caused the war that killed nearly everyone in their families. But yeah you're right about Rhaenyra not taking her status as heir seriously enough like that girl has done nothing to get people to like her and be on her side.

Willem Blackwood defending his honor after it was insulted by Rhaenyra (Which was even encouraging for other lords to do the same without her realizing it.) and then her not even acknowledging his bravery after he comes out on top might say a lot about her as a future ruler to these lords watching. Rhaenyra leaving instead of breaking up the fight was her demonstrating her power poorly. Willem can not only see this as disrespectful to him and his house but it may encourage him to side with the Greens in the upcoming war and that would be a major loss for Rhaenyra because his house actually has one of the strongest armies in the Riverlands. Her being more interested in supper than these lords going out of their way traveling miles upon miles for a chance at her hand in marriage is also a parallel to how she'll be in the future. The first season made her love for food clear numerous times and if I remember right, in Fire & Blood, after taking King's Landing from the Greens, she actually puts on weight from stress eating and her never being able to lose all of her weight from her pregnancies like Allicent did doesn't help either.

When pacing is so slow, their scenes will be so stretched out that they will lack this debth. But LOTR in general lacks depth

Interesting how the Baratheon sigil still has the stag with the crown on its neck even in this time period where a Baratheon isnt on the throne for the 7 kingdoms.
@danielsalgado1316
@danielsalgado1316 Жыл бұрын
Thats cause the Crowned Stag was the sigil of House Durrandon who ruled as the Storm Kings during the Age of Heroes, after defeating King Argillac Durrandon and marrying his daughter Orys Baratheon took their family sigil and words as his own during Aegon’s conquest, so the crowned stag predates the Baratheon reign of the Seven Kingdoms

You are EXACTLY right in your analysis--both in the Bracken and Blackwood feud, AND the signs of really just how unprepared Rhaenyra is for the realities of rule at that moment. Amazing analysis and so glad I found this channel!

Wow I can’t believe I just found this post randomly. I can’t forget how much I enjoyed the last Jamie POV when he finished helping the Freys in the riverlands, (Which by the way was so well-written), And his revenue travel to Raventree, and if iirc, He stops to speak with the Blackwood Lord, who he finds in in flagrant delicto in his tent, whilst laying siege to the Brackens about some lands that they are due to take back as they were the the kings and the Brackens were only their castellans/stewards in days of yore. Jamie was sort of riding high since he took back the riverlands for the Freys without any bloodshed, at least in his part. He almost casually asks Blackwood for a map detailing what lands he was due and in in turn has the self same conversation when he goes to treat with the Brackens. It’s the same situation in a way but nothing as violent occurs, once again without any bloodshed. It’s almost as if he’s getting some of his former confidence back and I think he feels quite pleased with himself that he was able to look down his nose at Walder Frey and insult him ever so subtlety. The Red Wedding does not qualify as honorable in his eyes and also he has a certain respect for the Starks, especially Catelyn. And in a strange twist of fate,(we the audience know the brotherhood without banners know his location since they were with the Freys)a woman looking for him turns out to be Brienne that he willingly follows by himself to rescue Sansa which we learn from Cersei POV and we are left with this cliffhanger! I hope that Jamie doesn’t die like this because he seems to be on a redemptive arc as he ignores Cersei’s note to come back to KL right away.

So just to be clear because there's been a ton of really gross comments I've deleted about how "womz are bad", what I meant and should've emphasized more is that she's turning out way too much like Daemon. This is exactly what he would've done in Rhaneyra's place, and there's a reason he has no allies except Corlys and his gold cloaks across the realm despite being heir for so long. And also to reinforce its largely Viserys' fault through inattentiveness as a teacher and parent that she's an amateur at playing court. He should've spent a lot more time working on Rhaenyra than his model of valyria. That her model of good behavior is Daemon is a real failure on Viserys' part. Edit: Also because I've been asked this about 100 times on this video. Yes those are not the canon images of the Blackwoods and Amos Bracken. That's because there are no canon images of any of them, so rather than swiping someone's fan art I modified some similar images like Bittersteel (A Bracken), from GoT using Jojen Reed and Anguy as starting points, and Magic the Gathering card art. I do this all the time in my videos when I can't find artwork from official sources. If you want to know who the artist are, links to them and their websites are in the description.

Love you clarified though I think it was obvious, there was literaly no hint of it is because of her gender in the analysis and you are very right. A mention of how that is to a good part on viserys is very much on point, but people should be able to think that far. We seen him dissmiss her, allow people to dissmiss her saying she has much to learn only to not teach her in any way at all..... She is defensiv and goes against politeness, for that is what she received. Viserys showes of good will are perceived and well often are Shows of weaknesses she does not want to repeat so she emulates the only person she got on her side.... And it is the wrong move.... Analysing what she does wrong and where it will lead does not necessarily need an in depth analysis of how and why she came to make those errors, but it is still great to get that. Overall a job very well done explaining the depth behind a scene, that looked so small and fanservicey. She is digging her own grave ther and it is not the only layer there.

Thank you. Though I am staunchly Black, Rhae should've handled this better, but even with that this road directly leads back to Viserys.

I'm team black and I do like Rhaenerya but her inability to think two steps ahead is going to be her undoing, and is likewise a strength of Alicent's. Going into the ep 8 they definitely are giving her and her family a cornered dog feeling and rightfully so. Her aloofness kind of makes sense though, while Viserys wants her married he as a King was simply interested in keeping the peace so I think he failed to impair upon her a strategic mindset. Maybe he would have but he initially as we all know he was betting on a son, so perhaps that imparting came too late.

@@JoeMagician I randomly came across this video and as a huge GOT fan I really like it and I'll be checking out your other videos. I found the background music too loud and I do however strongly suggest you don't use background music. I firmly believe background music is unnecessary, distracting, annoying, and doesn't add anything to the video. I also believe people want to hear you speak/get information and not hear generic background music that they have to filter out.
