I was allowed to stay home that day. My mom was a secretary and my dad was an engineer on the challenger, designed part if the firewall behind the crew cabin. My mom called me shortly after and said she wouldn't be home till late, I could hear screaming and crying in the background. My dad was never the same and retired a few years after. So sad for everyone.

I watch you all the time and I have an 8 and 18 year old son. Like most teenagers he doesn’t spend a lot of time watching tv with me. He watches your videos with me. He said you are “such a pretty, smart, funny and talented woman”. He says he could listen to you tell stories about paint drying because you make everything so interesting . So thank you for making videos that give me more time with my son! ❤

My father was one of the engineers on the space Shuttle program. He was one of the ones who recommended scrubbing the l launch. The next 2 years were depressing as a kid. Most of my friends had to move away due to job closures at cape. We were outside to see the disaster. As millions watched on TV. We saw and heard it live. For months we got to see parts and pieces wash up at Jetty Park and area beaches closing the areas each time it happened. And for those who have been told they found all of the crew in the cockpit area, tell my why they would find body parts washing up from time to time. All of the pieces are buried on pad 31 with the remains of the Apollo I

Did you know they also wanted to send Big Bird up there on the Challenger as well to get more little kids into science. But the actor who played Big Bird couldn't do it or wouldn't (I can't remember). Could you imagine the trauma inflicted on preschool kids if they watched Big Bird die!!!! They were already traumatized by seeing the shuttle break up with a teacher.

I was 9 and our kitty had been hit by a car the day before so my mom let me stay home and I remember watching it thinking the explosion was just the boosters separating from the spaceship because we had leaned in school the they detach when they launch and lose fuel. Seeing my Mom’s face made me know that it was not normal and she just looked at my Dad and started crying.

It was so effing tragic. I specifically remember the fact there was a teacher in there and how her students were watching. Bailey, HELLLLLLP I just learned about a surprisingly unheard of story. At least for me, I have never ever heard of this and I hope you can bring awareness to it by doing a story about this. In Spain they use Galgos Dogs to hunt and once they are set free they break their legs so that the dog not return to the hunter again. I also read about other horrible abuse Spain hunters do to that specific breed of Dog. They are even skinned alive... it's horrible. I really hope you see this because more awareness has to be done for change to happen. Thank you.

Her Titanic comment is very apt because part of the reason Titanic sank was for similar reasons. The iceberg did so much damage because the steel was compromised due to an extreme combo of cold and heat. Similar to how the extreme variety of temperatures made the o rings less reliable

O-rings are also used on either end of a flesh tunnel. They're usually made of nitrile, a type of latex-free rubber that's capable of withstanding fluctuating extremes of temperature. The O-rings on Challenger were made of FKM Rubber, which is a natural latex rubber that's been mixed with a type of vinyl.. and not nearly as durable or effective as nitrile...

I feel like every generation has that one traumatic event that defines THAT generation. For me as a millennial, I would say 9/11 is the biggest impact we've ever gotten. For Gen X, it has to be the Challenger. Common sense and some sense of precaution could have saved all seven of those lost lives.

As a Gen Xer we watched these shuttle launches live at school. I was in typing class when this happened. You have never seen a TV turned off and wheeled out into the hallway so fast. There was NO DISCUSSION then or all day that day on what many of us had just seen happen. They literally never said anything. One of my teachers hqd a discussion the following day. I cannot stress enough that really did just leave it up to parents who also did not discuss it. They just left us kids traumatized by seeing this thing explode live and then see it on the news repeatedly. That would not happen today. So yeah, if you've ever wondering why Gen X is the way they are - this is an example.

In the Challenger mission that was done BEFORE the tragic one, ( the explosion happened in the next mission) A Prince from an Arab County was the special guest who joined the NASA crew in the Challenger. When I heard this will happen, I told people this was a dumb idea because sometimes a rocket explodes like a big bomb, and if the Prince got killed, it would be a serious diplomatic incident we should avoid. Everybody told me there was no way that would happen. The rocket was carefully engineered so this could NEVER happen. Werner Von Braun had seen this happen with the V2 prototypes they had tested at Peenemünde during World War 2 and the krauts had figured out how to make sure there was NO chance it could happen again. I should have BET them lots of money, eh?
