Geoff Collins ware hired to transition Georgia Tech football from the triple option to a modern offense, but it did not go as planned as four years later he was fired and today we will take a look at the rise and fall of coach Collins, enjoy!

My last game as a student was the Georgia game in Bobby Dodd in 2021. Collins had all the energy but just could not produce any on field results. I hate seeing how far we’ve fallen from being somewhat competitive against uGA every year to now just the absolute doormat. We’re a program with real history and could be solid, but it’s going to be a tough rebuild.

As a young Tech student, I always looked forward to football games, especially given our history. After two seasons under Collins, I can't lie when I say I dread football games. It's embarrassing. And for the few students who do show up on Saturdays at Bobby Dodd, all we have the courage to yell is "F*** Geoff Collins" on every 3-and-out we have, and trust me, we have plenty. It's gotten so bad, that our marching band only plays our fight song (touchdown anthem) whenever we convert first downs, since we never score. It's tough, but only up from here. Yo Yackets.

I swear man it’s so sad that this era of Tech football has now made people believe we are a Vandy or Duke type program. We are not. Georgia Tech is a place with a history of winning and one of the longest active bowl streaks before it ended in 2015. People show their ignorance regarding college football when they say stuff like that considering Tech has not only won an ACC championship in the last 20 years (Miami has not for example), but we have been to two orange bowls, won one of them and have gone to a bowl game 17 out of the last 22 years if you count 2022 as not going to be bowl eligible

The best formula for GT to compete against the pinnacle of power 5 teams is to go back to running a spread option attack with modern passing concepts. The answer is Brian Bohannon or Jeff Monken. When you win games, better recruits generally come.

And if you lower your academic standards, you will get better football players, but GT isn’t down to clown like that. A majority of the alumni have little interest in supporting the Athletic Dept, to be honest. Georgia had it’s period of being hamstrung by Reverend Richt’s Zero Tolerance Moral Elitism, then the AD and boosters realize that they are dismissing top athletes for violations, that other schools were not even reporting publicly. Schools like LSU under Miles and Florida under Spurrier and Meyer attracted and retained better athletes and enjoyed more success as a result. The same concept applies to Tech. It’s up to each institution to decide the identity of their football program and the first step is establishing academic and moral standards.

What did you think was going to happen positively bringing in a defensive coordinator with very limited head coaching experience to a school who does not support the football program financially. I mean the commitment is just not there I don't care what your recruiting area is like there's no commitment to facilities ,salaries for assistant coaches that even resemble a 21st century football program . As a second year AE major at Tech, I have definitely seen the decrease in morale in not just the fans but also the team. As a lifelong Tech fan, I believe everyone bought into the hype about Collins but I completely agree that we needed a more experienced coach to transition from the triple option. I wouldn't say that Collins was doomed from the start, he coached more waiting for bad things to happen instead of being proactive and making good things happen. Collins coached not to lose as opposed to coaching to win.

Even without the hindsight of the last two weeks of victories under Interim Coach Brent Key, Collins seemed either unwilling or unable to lead a team that was both disciplined or prepared to play week to week. The different quotes that he would say about building a brand and culture could be seen as nothing more than empty sentences that missed the whole point that the only culture and brand that matters is winning and building an internal infrastructure that can help with that (see Atlanta Braves organization). The phrase used car salesman seems to be the only accurate phrase of a barely decent Temple coach who talked his way into Georgia Tech.

No P5 head coach would go there. Would have to get a coordinator or a lower level G5 head coach. Collins was yet another AAC head coach who left a program where he could have stayed and been happy and been given a long leash but left for the "greener pastures" of the P5. Almost all of them have failed. Only Mike Norvell has done well, and Josh H at Tennessee have been semi successful. While Tennessee has been great, we saw Butch Jones start out 4-0 and be fired a year or so later, so the book is still out on them. It amazes me that 1) none have done better, as if you can turn Memphis or UCF into a top 25 program, how can you not do it at Nebraska or Virginia Tech or Tennessee or Arkansas? 2) these smaller programs had more talent than the programs they went to. Norvell's 2018 Memphis team would have whipped any FSU team in the last 3 years. 3) it makes me think that there must be a big difference between developing three stars and developing four and five stars. 4) I also wonder if these coaches have wished they had stayed. They were semi-gods in their town and could have done whatever they wanted. 3 years later most of them are out of a job. If they could go back in time would they do it again? Was it just the money or was it more? If Memphis had agreed to pay Norvell $5 million would he have stayed? I mean they just raised $200 million for a new facility, but two million extra for the head coach could have gotten them another new year six bowl and possibly into the Big 12. Gary Patterson stayed at TCU and got them into the Big 12. Luke fickle stayed at Cincinnati and got them into the Big 12. Sometimes I just think that these coaches should stay where they're at, but then again if they stay too long and don't have as much success their name is no longer talked about. I know I went on a rant here but I would be curious to ask these former AAC coaches if they could go back in time if they would do it again or just be happy where they're at making two to three million a year. And I can't get around the fact that most aren't successful at bigger programs. It makes no sense if they can do it at a smaller School.

I don’t believe the rebuild will be as daunting as most make it out to be. By most metrics I’ve seen, the talent is decent (certainly well above what the results show). Now I know some of that will be gone in the transfer portal with the coaching change, but I still think the team has the talent to go bowling. The issue has always seemed like coaching. A pattern of boneheaded penalties, questionable play-calling/scheming, poor clock management, and just undisciplined mistakes. Also, the UCF game was so freaking frustrating. The offense was actually moving the ball pretty well, but it would completely sputter the second they sniffed the redzone. They put up something like 450 yards and only had 10 points to show for it. Not the mention the 4th(!) blocked punt of the season. Anyways, glad we’re moving on the Collins. I wish it had worked out for him, but it clearly didn’t. No clue who the answer is. Having seen Tech succeed running the spread option, I like the idea of someone like Chadwell, who runs a modernized take on it. But who knows with how the CFB landscape continues to change. At this point I just hope whoever is next can get us back to being a consistent bowl team. You know it’s going poorly when you start thinking fondly of the 7-5 Gailey equilibrium days.

I agree. Tech has talent and it shows up from time to time but it doesn't sustain throughout the game. Thats coaching. With the transfer portal and some of the current roster, it should not be that hard to get competitive quickly with the right coach.

The problem with schools like GT is recruiting. JUCO is their best route. They need an RPO style offense with mobile RPO QB. The pro style offense is very difficult to operate with 1 or 2 star OL. GT best strategy would be to concentrate on talented TE's. Run 12 personnel (2 TE offense) with RPO. Run short stop routes and drag routes to get 5/6 yards a pop. Hope for JUCO WR's.

The administrators has to take them being a power 5 school seriously. They have to let the next coach. Coach! I mean they should aleast be bowl eligible on a bad yr. They have decent talent. Idk they need a coach who is already a coach. Getting a OC or DC coach is ok. But right now I think it's bigger then that. They need to rebuild. Be consistent most importantly learn to win. Not barley beat small or other teams in other divisions. Better yet , not LOSE to them either. The next coach they get has to do a heck of alot better then Collins. Which they should, cause he sucks!
