Honestly Georgia State and Georgia Southern moving up to FBS kinda hurt Tech's recruiting. As an ATL area athlete that recently graduated, most of the top athletes, if they didn't get offered by UGA, they would consider Southern or State bc the academic requirements aren't as high or as strict and if they couldn't go there, they would just go to Kennesaw State who is FCS but has a really good upstart program since they got a football team in 2015.

I am one of those Dawg fans who wants Tech to be good again. I got that old soul at the grand ole age of 43 that wants to see a slobber knocking mail biter between IGA and GaTech. I think it starts with the school going into the city and finding some massive boosters to push the program. Then a coach with a no nonsense approach. Don’t sell the city, sell the team. Here’s pulling for a good GaTech team so we can have a rivalry again. Go Dawgs

It’s gonna take a while unfortunately, I knew it would be a bad couple years under Collins because of how big this rebuild but now it’s apparent this guy really cannot coach, which has done nothing but dig us in a deeper hole. So now our only hope is maybe firing this idiot and putting chip long or somebody fairly competent in place and really turning things around. Sorta like pepper Rodgers era leading into Bill Curry, or Bill Lewis into George O Leary. We’ve been in these shitty situations before but unique to tech we’ve made a quick recovery with the right guy in place.

Georgia Tech football in some ways reminds me of Syracuse. Tech generally had good teams when it had a Triple Option offense but some fans thought it was outmoded and needed to be replaced. Syracuse when it was in the Big East also ran a Triple Option offense and they generally had good teams back then. But, some fans there thought it was outmoded and needed to be replaced. Syracuse went to a more pro-style offense and haven't been as good since that switch. Tech appears to be following that same trajectory.
@WhiskeyNchill

GT fans didn’t want Paul Johnson gone, nor did he get fired. He retired. Was GT suppose to find another coach that runs the triple option to replace him? There wasn’t a lot of good triple option coaches out there to replace him with. GT had to move forward. There was bound to be some growing pains transitioning out of the triple option, and I think Tech fans have been patient and understanding of that.

Not a particularly good or insightful commentary, but 100% true. However, he omits Tech's biggest problem, and that is a totally incompetent athletic director who is destroying virtually all Tech sports, with his outrageous contracts and contract extensions. The athletics board was ready and willing and had the money to fire Collins after last year, but Stansbury put his own job on the line by getting them to agree to keep Collins at least one more year. Hopefully both Collins and Stansbury will be gone after this year, with Collins likely being gone before the season even ends.

If the only criteria you are using is football, then that is probably why you feel that way. The AD still has brought in more funding in the last years. Other sports programs are doing well. Emotionally, I too would have fired Collins. But financially, it would be another disaster and then there is the fact that if you don't give coaches somewhat of a guarantee, they won't come in the first place. By the recruiting numbers, he(Collins) has done fairly well. I think were they have blown it is the game planning and execution. Calling the right plays at the right time and then also the players have to do better and not make mistakes.

@@richardlellip.e.m.b.a.7969 I was an option QB… it’s very different. The players that fit an option scheme are a different build/type. In pro style/spread systems, you need a taller QB, bigger, taller olineman, and speedier, shiftier WR’s. In an option system, leverage is key, so you have shorter, stockier lineman, QB’s that are generally shorter (affects vision in the passing game) and shiftier, and receivers that are willing to block, and can catch some deep go routes. Pro style/spread players can switch to an option scheme because of athleticism, option players are selected specifically for the system. You’re not going to see many option QB’s that have the accuracy, height, or arm talent to play QB in a spread system. Take Keenan Reynolds from Navy: amazing, dynamic, record setting option QB…. With a 50% completion rate. He had to switch to receiver/RB to have any chance in the pros.

Yeah that’s what everyone says about Texas but here we are in 2022 and it finally looks like they might end up in the top 25 at the end of the season (maybe lmao). Georgia tech is similar to Texas (not to be confused with on par with UT as a program historically just right now) in that a lot of the top talent in the country is local and should land more guys in state than they do or just waste the ones who they do successfully recruit. A&M like Georgia will be the 1st choice of top guys in state currently , and midteir or Higher mid Teir recruits would traditionally go to Gtech or UT as second choice. But now many of the those guys will go to even smaller schools like GSU, KS, TCU, SMU ect.. start immediately, ball out and transfer to top program for 1 year before getting drafted. New Rules with endorsements and transfer portal accessibility will create a big gap for top 10 programs and rest of top 25 but I think a lot of the smaller programs will get more competitive and balanced too. At least that’s what I am predicting

Paul "peejay" Johnson, aka Pajamas, took one look at the shytty Roster that he Recruited and decided to QUIT on GT FB Had Pajamas looked at the Roster & saw All-ACC Talent everywhere & a possible 11 win Team, then he wouldn't have retired Pajamas retired because he Recruited the Roster into oblivion Take a look at both the Offensive Line & the Defensive Line that Pajamas left behind and no one, not even Saban could've won more than 3 Games Pajamas ran an unpopular Triple sloption Offense in a State where many HS Recruits go to the NFL & dream about the NFL, so after 11 years of GT not being in the Business of sending guys to the NFL , essentially destroying Recruiting inroads at many GA HSs, then after this 11 years of destroying Recruiting Infrastructure in-State we had many idiot GT Fans that expected CGC to just turn thing around overnight, the AD Stansbury knew how much damage Pajamas had done which is why he gave Collins 7 years instead of the normal 5 yr contract After what CPJ left behind we were damn near like SMU climbing back from the Death Penalty, but since so many GT FANS know little to nothing about CFB, they refused to see it Re-watch the Minnesota Bowl Game and then imagine the losses off of that Team, that's what Collins was walking into, a depleted Roster that caused the previous lazy Recruiter of a HC to up & quit If GT was serious about Winning we'd hire a guy like Art Briles, imagine what he'd do at GT recruiting in the 13 County Metro Area All you CPJ apologists need to learn a lot about P5 CFB All that being said , Collins should be doing better, he should be cutting guys & doing Roster Mgmt like Saban or Urban used to do and bring in better players while cutting dead weight coaches Like Thacker & Brent Key

We all knew making the switch from PJ was going to be a tough road.u biggest beef with Collins is not that it's been hard to win. It's the way we're losing. It's fundamental problems that are 100% coaching and 0% talent. It's blocked kicks. It's quitting in the 4th quarter. It's stupid penalties. The program shows a complete lack of discipline and that's coaching issues, not talent.

Honestly, with little or no support from the administration, the Tech program is doomed. They should have never let go of Paul Johnson as his style of play benefited a program like Tech. You’re not going to compete with the other programs for the better recruits and having the same system that Clemson or Georgia run will get your teeth knocked in. People were pissed when Chan said that this was a 7-8 win/ year program, but they’d love to be there right now. Paul at least have you a shot at being somewhat competitive. It wasn’t sexy, but it got the job done. The days of being good on the Flats are long gone. I honestly do not see a scenario where Tech will beat Georgia in the next 15 years given the current situation. That might make people mad, but facts don’t care about your feelings.

Jeff Collins is getting fired next season. No doubt about that. But Georgia Tech needs to get more competitive. During rivalry weekend, the UGA v Georgia Tech game isn't a good game to watch. Unless your a UGA fan. Because UGA blows them out. Georgia Tech needs a recruiter, like Dave Aranda. Personally I believe it will be almost impossible to get Dave Aranda to come to Georgia Tech. Because he loves it at Baylor. Plus Dave Aranda would not like the recruiting restrictions. Georgia Tech would have to give in on a lot of there restrictions and give Dave Aranda a big budget to get this program back on track. Dan Mullen should be the next Georgia Tech head coach. Now yes at UF Dan Mullen failed. But UF has high standards. Dan Mullen recruits ok and gets the most out of the players he gets. I believe it would be perfect for Georgia Tech. Plus Mullen is one of the best play callers out there. Just a idea.😁

GT alum here. I think something that is fundamentally missing is that early on this man trashed his predecessor. He made it out like he has no talent. However, this coach wanted this team and they became his players. He lost so much respect among alumni with his attitude as if he thinks he was better than the most successful coach in the modern era. GT doesn’t have the fan base (lots of alumni move out of state) or frankly are not football fans. What GT is known for is rigor and pride in doing hard things. Trying to sell the city, Waffle House, and the stupid money down garbage fails if you don’t coach players to know how to cover and tackle. It was always going to be challenge moving from the triple option but claiming historical change was just an excuse and lost a lot of faith. He is a snake oil salesman who has no real substance and does not understand the spirit of what a yellow jacket means which is fighting spirit even to the bitter end. The roster we have now *is* the one thing that has improved over the last 3 years, though. His management of expectations is what he fucked up early on, but he was right about how bad the roster was. The one year CPJ had a roster as bad as what Collins inherited we went 3-9. Now, that doesn’t explain why Collins went 3-9 last year. That’s inexcusable. But him trashing Paul Johnson was fairly justified in my view given that I’ve talked to boosters close to Stansbury that said CPJ had an agreement with Stansbury to recruit non-triple option players, which CPJ just didn’t do with the exception of Yates. Now, Collins still probably should be fired, but really only using last year as a data point given that he did beat win projections his first two years at GT. People really just didn’t know how bad of a state GT football was in, and aren’t willing to extend him any credit even though last year was his first truly miserable coaching season.

Bad calls were numerous. At a critical time against Clemson, Gibbs didn't get the ball, or was told to fair catch. Really? I have watched tight ends and receivers run for days during Collins all out blitzes. I think Notre Dame just scored again on another 68 yard TD play on a short dump pass with no defender within an uber of him. I have watched 73-7, 55-0, a couple of 45-0s, 24-2 (how you only score a safety I don't know). Gibbs is tired of this and I can't blame him for leaving. Bill Lewis was fired for better. For Tech, the fact is we have and will never recruit our way to glory. Oh we get maybe 4 or 5 really good ones but our issue has always been defensive front 7. Defense has been our issue of course until now. Both offense and defense are bad. At Tech we need to be different, We can't run the same offensive scheme as every body else, That Pro Style. Dodd did not have the best players but he used what he had and adapted the scheme, Ralph Friedgen did the same and ran multiple plays out of 10 different formations, to include triple option. CPJ was what we needed. A successful head coach that ran a scheme that every body had to spend extra time getting ready for. He adapted players and developed them. Many of our best players were 2 star players. So where do we go next. We need a proven head coach that can develop and win at a school like Tech. Jeff Monken at Army is the guy. And for those that do not want the exact of CPJ, Monken said he would adopt his offense as needed based on the players he had.

None of that will change the fact that we haven’t had a healthy offensive line since CGC has been there and still don’t have a DLine. As I ask any Tech “fan,” who are you gonna hire? Who is it? Are you talking about for 2022 or for 2019? If 2019, Choice has had just one season under his belt as a RB coach for North Texas. Even after 3 seasons at Tech, how do you just take a position coach and elevate him to head coach?

@@TheKiman2 I understand it’s a move that doesn’t fit the typical experience resume of winning. However I do think Choice is a better fit for the era we are going in. Let’s not act like Choice doesn’t understand football. He played at the NFL level. It does even have to be him but if Tech wants to be competitive they need a coach with a Name more than they need the Diamond in the rough at Temple type of coach. Tech is a hard sell to players considering the lack of fans at games plus challenging academics.
