You can make good arguments for both sides of these two, but frankly speaking no one could have predicted what would happen with North Korean, not even the North Koreans. A country isolated from the world and strongly class segregated isn't the world they fought for. So the decision to nuke or to not to nuke wasn't really ever up to us Americas.

I used to go fishing with a veteran who survived the Chosin Reservoir. Even 50 years later (this was in the early 2000's) he still had nightmares about the battle and especially the feeling of being completely outnumbered and seeing a "literal wave of humans" (his words) swarming down towards his position, each and every one of them seemingly trying to k!ll him.

There are not many western films about the Korean War so I was elated to see Devotion. I wish HBO would make a miniseries about the Korean War next following Masters of the Sky, The Pacific and Band of Brothers. And time is running out as there are now fewer Korean War veterans to interview testimonies.

Funny how during Black History month Jessie Leroy Brown is not brought up as he is a true hero , a pioneer in showing how black men can achieve in the largely segregated military at that time . But then again he was just a servicemen not a basketball or football player or activist so he does not get the recognition he solely deserves . The book should be a must read to everyone no matter your race or political ideology and it shows the courage Jessie Brown had to face the many obstacles he overcame . And also shows the brother hood between the two men and how Tom Hudner saw Jessie as his wingman , his friend rather than a black man . And was willing to risk his life to save his friend . Jessie Leroy Brown should never be forgotten for what he was and what he did and as long as people remember him , he is truly alive in spirit .

Honorable Mention to Captain Conrado Yap, Filipino Tank Ace of the Korean War, credited for destroying 13 Chinese and North Korean vehicles combined. He was later shot dead by a North Korean sniper during the Battle of Yultong. His sacrifice was never in vain as the outnumbered Filipino force was able to repel the Chinese attack.

All my rants aside, I had an amazing teacher who was there. Jesse wasn’t there to “break barriers” he was there for the same every boy was. That’s what was amazing. To say that this one black dude was there to prove the quality of black Americans cheapens his loss. It was, from what I was told, a frigid nightmare and every man who was there holds it as their deepest despair. I honestly hope to never understand them. Those boys were cast out with little care.
