Hey Everyone, welcome back! After Riding Segment 6 of the CT from Kenosha Pass to Breck in the last episode, we had originally planned to ride up the paved road and take segment 7, miners creek, back in to Breck for this one. It became quickly obvious that two days like this in a row would have been killer, so we decided to drive back to Vail and ended up having an unexpectedly phenomenal day of bike park laps.

Vail Bike Park on Trailforks:
www.trailforks.com/region/vai...
Vail is much more well known for the winter season as one of the largest ski areas in Colorado. I don't post much to KZfaq, but if you follow on Instagram, you know that skiing is the sport I wish I had more time to do. Vail has some of the most awesome and easily accessible terrain during winter, with everything from steeps, to bumps to nice gladded runs. But enough of that, you're not here for skiing, the point is, I had always found it surprising that it isn't as regarded for summer, so I didn't really know what to expect.
One thing that makes Vail super cool to ride is that you get A TON of vert each run, for reference Fitzsimmons express which is the main lift at the worlds most well known bike park, Whistler, takes you up 1138ft. The main Gondola at Vail, Eagle Bahn, takes you up almost double at 2215ft. This means runs down feel like they're eternal, in a very good way. Additionally, the builders here rarely use fall lines, so millage is also quite high each run, but it doesn't feel flat. The real downside is that in comparison to Whistler which has too many runs to count, or even Keystone which is a short drive away, Vail only has a handful of dedicated bike trails, and about 15 multi-use trials.
I've now made my mind up on what I think about this bike park and I think I know why its not as well known as some other places. If I had to convey it in just a few words, this is a trail riders bike park, not a downhill bike park. What I'm trying to say is whether it makes sense for you to come here or go to Keystone for example, is not about whether Vail is good or bad, because its really really good, but about what your expectations are. Yes, there's a few jumps here, but its not a jumping place, yes there's some chunky downhill stuff, but its not DH bike worthy. Instead, everything seems to be though out so it can be ridden with your trail bike without any issues. To me, its a phenomenal place, specially if you're not too fond of huge jumps, I know I'd come back, but if I wanted to get some DH rig experience, I'd probably go to Keystone or Winter Park instead.
Well everyone, that's all I have for you today, I hope you had fun coming along for a day of riding at Vail and that if you're considering going yourself, this video helped you see what to expect. In the next video, we're hitting the big one for the roadtrip, conquering Mt. Elbert, the tallest 14er in the state of Colorado. I'll see you for the next one and happy riding!

So as someone who moved to vail this winter to snowboard and work here Im now staying for the summer and wanted to see what the mountain biking scene was like and compared to the trails i rode back east it looks great. As for the trail diversity it turns out that the trails are made and maintained by the summer staff of ski patrol as a hobby more than part of their job so they only cut one a year if that. But if Vail gets a dedicated bike crew it could be some of the best park riding in CO

Thanks CJ, appreciate it. Skiing is the best. I've tried to get some video and honestly never get to a quality point where I think I can pull it off. There's a few half baked ones that I scrapped. No skiing for me this season, so maybe next one I'll try again.

Wow, three years you've been subscribed. Thanks so much, really means a lot to hear from the people who've stuck around. Vail is amazing, I wouldn't spend a whole vacation just at the bike park, but its an area where you can choose a "homebase" and drive an hour here and there to hit a bunch of amazing spots.

Its funny when you riding easy trails abuse by beginners at the end of season in high speed you suddenly find out is bone rattle ride more tiring than any black trail, love it.... to bad didn't visit any bike park last year, hope this year will be better...... rather ride those kind of trails than craaazy jumps!!! Ohhh NO, ohhh NO poor bike and the tree :-) thank you for excellent riding, cheers V!

Not all is bad with florida lol. Trail accesibility around South Florida is phenomenal for year round riding, but yes, I do miss living close to the mountains. Skiing is a huge ordeal instead of just a drive up. Maybe someday I'll move again.

You comment on your hand pain from time to time on long rides. I'm curious what that is for you? I've just finished some studies to find out about mine. My fingers go numb and my wrist has a sharp pain in it on my right hand. I did a nerve study and found out I do have carpal tunnel syndrome, which is why the fingers go numb (they go numb on my mtb, on my motorcycle, and while holding a switch pro controller--it's weird). I also did an mri + arthrogram with contrast and don't know the results on that one yet. I have my follow up with my hand and wrist specialist in a couple of weeks. Hoping whatever is going on is correctable without too much impact. We think it's because of my arm break last fall and having to use my other arm to do basically everything for months, plus unnoticed or unaddressed trauma on my unbroken wrist. It did hurt for a few days, but compared to my other arm, it was barely noticeable (especially with the meds they had me on). So I'm just wondering what your experience is? Pain and I are old friends, but I've never done anything longer than 10 miles on my mtb so I'm just curious.
@BlindstuffMTB
@BlindstuffMTB 2 жыл бұрын
You won't believe this, but for me it was the angle of my brake levers. I've got them almost flat now where my wrist is more in a "push up" position and the pain has mostly gone away. I've had a few arm and hand injuries and thought maybe it was that, but it turned out to be much simpler of a fix. Try it out and see if it works for you before you focus only on the medical route. Jokes in the video aside, I think this is a good reference: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bb94d9Om07mYqYU.html I don't have them 100% flat, but I went flat and then a bit down and it helped enormously. I Still get some pain on very long ride but its waaaayyyy better. Hope its an easy fix for you too.
