Going off-roading alone is never advised. We went against our better judgement and headed out into the snow to spend a night at a remote cabin. After trying for hours to get through old snow with no traction, we broke the truck. 4 hours on the side of trail in freezing temperatures in the dark. Find out how this story ends in the next episode.
We're behind the wheel of our built 86 pickup affectionately names The Yeti. His build list is as follows:
2wd to 4wd conversion
22re with 5 speed
Dual transfer cases with twin sticks
Custom front bumper from Westcan Offroad Design
Custom rock sliders from Fabsall
5.29 Yukon Gears F/R
Lock right lockers F/R
Custom thick wall driveshafts from Western Driveline
TG rear bumper
OTT Hi Steer with FJ80 "555" tie rod ends and ARP knuckle studs
Big brake upgrade/braided brake lines
37x12.5x15 Interco TrXus tires
Currently on 15x10 Daytona Steelies painted bronze
Mint interior with custom center console and wicked stereo set-up
Magnaflow 2.5" exhaust with stainless tip
Bilstein 14" 5125 shocks
Runva XP11500 Winch, synthetic rope and wireless remote

You guys ever run chains? In MN in the woods chains can be the only solution especially with smaller tires like 33’s. Could you try Land Cruiser axles, they look very similar just lighter? We are good at fixing Taco CV’s, bearings, and u joints. BTW, my bro blew up berfield on his Cruiser with Chromoly axle shafts but that’s a waaaay heavier rig. Anything is possible, anytime and it’s practically guaranteed to happen when you’re by yourself. You guys have great attitudes to get through it!!🤟🍺

Cheers m8, thanks for the comment! This truck got chromos shortly after this trip (see follow up vid). Our Chinook motorhome will be getting cruiser axles though!

I would suggest RCV axles they are pricey but are pretty much guaranteed not to break

use a small flat head screw driver hammered into the crack of the cone washers to get them out works a treat.

They were so buried into the arm I couldn't even find the gap, let along get a screwdriver in there. I've had luck with that before, but not this time.

So you weren't on 30 splines in this video? I'm surprised they lasted as long as they have! I think another thing all of us Toyota guys need to do is the tacoma/tundra/etc brake swap + IFS hub swap which widens our axle width and makes it easier to r&r birfields.

I was rocking the smurfield axles for ages (cool upgraded stock axles before Bobby Longs) and they were great for nearly 3 years. Maybe I started wheeling harder in the last year, idk.

I drove past your house today(as I do every three weeks) and saw the Yeti sitting there, never thought it came close to leaving you stranded! Don't know where you were wheeling at the time, but I live in Port Alberni and I'd be willing to come to your rescue anytime, anywhere, just a phone call away. Let me know if you want a emergency backup number, cheers. D.J.

ok ok, I'm only 2 years new into wheeling (south island). I'm always worried about breaking an axle. Can someone explain to me in short form what, how and why this happened?
@davetaf1323
@davetaf1323 2 жыл бұрын
The components are over loaded meaning too large of a tyre ......also he's running lockers so theres no forgiving with shock loads of wheels bouncing and grabbing for traction shocking the the axle components ....if you run 33 inch tyres and dont hop your front wheels you shouldnt have to worry .......NEVER WHEEL ALONE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@@davetaf1323 that’s why now I’m always sticking with 33” on my 70’s series and 2 inch lifted. If the trail is too hard to go, then I have a winch, harder take the pulley out.

Birfields commonly break when the steering is fully articulated and torque is applied in forwards or reverse. Also wear and tear from big tires and wheels. I never broke any when I was on 35s, even double locked with dual cases.
