Well according to the momentum in physics speed is proportionate to momentum therefore force soo by hitting it faster you are hitting it harder

I like being explaines stuff by middle-aged people, cause they have that normal diction and there isn't that self-important, condescending "This is why you're doing xyz wrong!" shit. This is an impeccable explanation, really simple analogy and a patient delivery...and now I've improved my hammer-ons permanently, cause I won't forget this. Thank you, sir.

He is right about speed vs strength but the nail and hammer is not a good analogy the nail and hammer have a lot more in physics for example the resistance of the nail pushing through the wood and the immense weight of the hammer head. The real reason that speed is more important for a guitarist hammer on is because if you come down to slow the flesh of your finger is actually going to interrupt the vibrating string by absorbing the energy of its physical oscillation this intern then cuts the Sonic effect of that oscillating string. It is also very good to use speed rather than pressure and weight because it will make you less tired and this is what is known as a more efficient technique.

Ok I got it. I'll let the natural gravity and weight from my finger to create the perfect hammer on. I was used to just pressing the note quickly and accurately with a finger. This will really help with my pull offs when we can use the anti gravity technique from the rebound of the hammer like when you hit a nail.

Pressure on the string is a different metric from acceleration of the finger. You don’t need a huge amount of torque on the string because the resistance is relatively low so you can focus on accelerating the finger instead of bracing for the weight of the string.
