Davy Jones is easily one of the best villains in pop culture history. His backstory is very deep and emotional, his performance is fantastic, and the visual effects are absolutely mind blowing. But that begs the question... who was he in real world myths? Where do the traits we see on screen come from? Who was Calypso? Is the Kraken real? What was the Flying Dutchman? What is Davy Jones' Locker? I invite you all to sit back, relax, and explore this deep dive into the inspirations of one of my favorite characters!

I have been going to sea for 30 years, The story I was told by an old captain 20 years ago was that, when a ship sank or never made port again and everyone knew they were lost at sea, people looked for someone to blame so they blamed Davy Jones, a name given to the Devil by sailors so the Devil could have an identity they could understand.

There's a lot of speculation surrounding the Flying Dutchman. Some say it's a story that originated in the seventeenth or eighteenth century, others say it originated from the nineteenth century. In all cases the ship and its crew come from the Dutch Golden Age aka the seventeenth century. One version of the legend features indeed Van der Decken, who was cursed to forever sail the seas because he wanted to sail out from either Amsterdam or Texel not just during a storm but also on Easter Day, a holy day. The headstrong captain supposedly would have said, when his crewmen warned him about Easter and the storm: "I don't care. I will sail, storm or no storm, Easter or no Easter, if it be until Judgment Day. I will sail!" With these words he earned the yre of God, who cursed him. The ship would turn black, it's sails red, it's crew and captain ghostly and it'd be embedded in a glow of sort. Though it kept flying the Dutch flag, which is how it earned its name. In this version the crew never find peace, and will cause storms and bring misfortune on any ship that sees it. In the versions where Van der Decken is cursed by not God but the devil, he is able to set foot on land every seven years, and told that the curse would be lifted if indeed a woman would love him. Back at home, Van der Deckens wife eventually learned what happened to her husband, and sacrificed herself by throwing herself into the waves to prove her love for him and break the curse, and the ship and crew finally found peace.

I remember owning a old book abt it. Think it was just called 'de vliegende Hollander' or the flying Dutchman in English. In it its the version of Van der Decken sailing out on Easter, and thus cursing himself. His wife knew abt his plan and even stood on the rocks, watching as his ship got cursed. Instead of needing true love, Van der Decken needed a piece of wood from his ship, Den Hollander, he gave his wife before he set sail. She kept it as part of het necklace, as a locket (probably not the right word). She died later on, and the locket was passed to their son, who was told by his mother to not become a sailor. The son, Flip iirc, ignored that warning and tried to get the locket to his dad. He encounters the Dutchman several times, every time a disaster happens, and Flip is the only survivor. After 3 or 4 encounters Flip finally gets on board of the Dutchman, and together with his father he lifts the curse. Or atleast thats how i remember it. Lost the book a few years ago

A more scary version of the Flying Dutchman is that when it sailed trough the deadly storm, the weather suddenly turned calm. From the sky a message from God was heard to warn Van der Decken that he should return to port. But Van der Decken wanted to continue sailing so bad, that he ignored God and shot with his pistol to the sky and said he would sail even if it was until judgement day. Than the weather turned into a storm again. The First Mate of the Dutchman begged Van der Decken to alter course, but Van der Decken became angry and threw the First Mate over board. And then the most scarierst thing happened. The Dutchman became cursed with a deadly form (dark hull and blood red sails). And while Van der Decken was navigating the Dutchman trough the storm, it is said that next to him stood the Devil himself as if it was his new First Mate.

@alphito, nope. Just looked into it. The Flying Dutchman made his first appearance on Spongebob in 1999, 7 years before Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest. The episode was S1 E11 ‘Squidward The Unfriendly Ghost.’ Also, he’s called The Flying Dutchman on the show.

I was a deckhand on a subsea vessel for a little over a year, doing six week trips onboard. We didn't go to port, instead we were supplied offshore, and after 5 or so weeks i have no problem believing sailors who claimed to see things in the distance. Let alone if they had been at sea for months. Clouds looked unmistakenly like shorelines, to the point i asked fellow crewmembers if we had moved closer to land. Some could easily be mistaken for ships as well

You know it’s plausible to think that the name Davy Jones came from British propaganda regarding pirates. I like to think of it more practically, maybe naval officers warned unruly sailors by simply stating they’d be sent to the locker on a count of them being disobedient. Hence is why I find it interesting that some of the first original accounts of this began in 1727, the golden age of piracy. Yet again though, from an archeological standpoint, we often find that some things are often not as casual as we consider them to be. I’d take a gander and say that Davy Jones was a legend from early enlightenment or late renaissance naval stories. Old Christianity has a habit of making subtle remarks to the devil or malicious spirits so by invoking Davy Jones as a pseudonym for the devil could likely be a case in which sailors (particularly Scottish Catholics) mentioned his name and legends alike while on long voyages. Pretty soon you got your average British sailor beginning to refer to the legend as well and then it becomes widely regarded as a common tale. I’d be interested to see what the evidence is though of the first written documents of Davy Jones though to understand more about this.

There was a rumor I heard once; the next pirates of the Caribbean movie was going to show how Davey Jones became cursed, show Sparrow and Jone crossing paths in a flashback and would've hade Bloom and Depp team up again to take on Davey Jones. As for the theories; I'm thinking it's a combination of a few theories while playing the original version of the telephone game. Remember; fisherman tell tales and have been know for tall tales. So tall tales over time will eventually become something different. So I'm thinking the 1st inspiration came from Jonas and the big fish and it became just a changed story between two people possibly drunk and someone like the story so much they told a version to their kids as an example. And someone else turned it into a cautionary tale for the seas.

In regards to the flying Dutchman. The sea is a funny thing. You can see reflections of reflections. And this can be multiple times. Theoretically, you can be on the west coast of the U.S. and see a reflection off the coast of East Africa. A lot of thing would have to line up. So. You could see a Frigate reflection thousands of miles away. This also goes into the "ship in the air" And the sea is not the only place this happens. It can happen in flat desert also. Both is caused by the reflection of water and water vapor.

In the movie Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man's Chest, pirate Davy Jones is the captain of the Flying Dutchman pirate ship. (In the movie it was a ghost ship). Because the entire ship and crew including the Captain himself were bewitched. Because he refused to love the woman who loved him. The woman said she could see it in his heart. On a voyage he broke his promise. His heart was locked in a casket as punishment for not keeping his promise. And at night they were cursed. (In the movie, the woman he refused to love with his heart was a sorceress, in her true form she was a sea monster, (a giant monster octopus) that sank ships, call name: "Kraken)". The curse was: They were ghosts with animal features and resembled sea animals. The difference was that they were Animal/Human Hybrids. In the film, the woman called herself: Calypso.

Just like in science, the simplest explanations for myths and historical mysteries usually prove true in the end. For example, the City of Troy was eventually found right where Homer said it was. So, I'd favor that the phrase "Davy Jones Locker," originally referred to the pirate David Jones, until definitively proved otherwise. It also makes sense because Jones predates the Golden Age of Piracy. This would give him years to grow to legendary status in the minds of later and more famous pirates who would actually utter the phrase "Davy Jones Locker."

It was customary to place coins upon the eyes of the dead for payment for the boat man to ferry the soul to the afterlife. A boatman was a volunteer usually a captain who would command a ship in order to cheat death or prolong the consequences of dying so that they would be able to still be close to their loved ones until both could die together. A contract of some sort. Davey was tricked into servitude by Colipso the Goddess of the sea and she never met him upon his short time when he’d be granted to walk upon land and embrace. She broke his heart and the pain was so much he had his crew remove it.

Davy Jones locker is not sending someone to hell. It is sending someone to the bottom of the ocean. It's the abyss of the ocean. Sailors who died on the ship would be put over board and sent to Davey Jones locker. People walking the plank and mutinies where maybe the captain is stabbed or something before walking the plank. Long and short it's only used it means the sea.

Its sucks that he was named Davy Jones, even though epic name, the true Dutchman Captain is Van der Decken they couldve atleast used a dutch name

Something that would have been cool: Davy Jones appearing aboard the Dutchman and killing Van Der Decken and claiming the ship as his own.

@@TheSEAempire EXACTLY or like a backstory of him taking over and freeing Van Der Decken of his curse

Legends are usually rooted in some measure of truth. Squids can climb on land. Someone waking up on a ship to a giant squid grabbing them and seeing their friends being grabbed as well and pulled overboard would be terrifying.☠️☠️☠️☠️
