The Truth About Cheap Motorcycle Levers
www.sportbiketrackgear.com/th...
There are many places to save money on your track bike but levers, and any of your controls in general, are not one of those places. There's a couple of things on this motorcycle that if they let you down, if they fail, if they're a poor quality or poor design and there's an issue with it, you could have a really big problem that could cause serious injury or worse.
This all started when one of our good customers purchased a set of Spiegler brake lines for his 2017 Yamaha R6. He watched my kick-ass install video and installed the brake lines on his bike, went for a ride, and the brakes locked up on him. He left a comment on the install video for help on fixing the problem. After reaching out to him, we were eventually able to determine the cause of the problem, which were the cheap aftermarket levers he installed on the bike. He agreed to send the levers over to us so we could get a look at them.
This video isn't an ad for CRG, we just want to point out some of the differences in a quality name brand lever versus a cheap no-name lever that you find on eBay or Amazon. Let us know what you think. Tell us what kind of levers you use, and if you've had any experience with any of these cheep levers.

Sportbike Track Gear Sorry I don’t want to mislead you, it wasn’t me in the Video. It belongs to someone called Cory. He put up such a good description of what caused the crash and it’s basically what you are stating! His and your video has stopped me buying cheap aftermarket levers.There is also a crash of someone on a track day, in the UK going flat Out, the front wheel locks and he totals the bike but walks away.If it had been on the streets I’m sure he would be dead.

I’ve never had 1 single issue from the eBay levers and I’ve bought like 3 sets for my R6. The only downside is that the black fades into this gold-ish color. I won’t be suckered into spending $100+ for some levers. They shouldn’t cost that much. Everyone has different experiences and opinions about the “good stuff”. I’ll stick with my eBay levers and spend the $80-$90 I saved by not buying ASV levers on something else.

I've installed cnc levers from China on my gen 1 fazer 1000, not an ounce of problems at all, and as to the allowed movement of the pin on the end of the clutch and brake cables, I've messed around with bike ones, they don't move, they're not supposed to move, why would you want them to move??? That's just gives another strain point on the cable, it needs to be rigid

Another great video guys. On my R6 race bike I run CRG carbon fiber levers with the remote brake adjust. On my supermoto I'm running ASV. You get what you pay for, and levers are certainly a no compromise part, they have to perform every time. Better to spend $100 per lever than have to pay $1,000 or more to fix your bike when you crash because of crappy cheap levers.

I'm glad I watched your video because i bought these levers and when i tested them I almost crashed due to the front brake locking up on me due to that cross pin being in that fixed position with no flex in it. Good thing I was going slow when it happened. I don't have an issue with it now since it has probably "adjusted" are my near miss. First of all I want to say great safety information in this video! You had me worried since I found this video right after installing the Amazon Chinese levers on my grom and z125. I watched this video 3 or 4 times trying to understand how such a simple lever could fail like you talk about. Secondly, I wish you would've talked about the difference between axial and radial brake masters. It took me a while to realize that the grom and z125 levers are axial and don't have that cross pin bearing and that there is literally no way for those to fail, in that manner. Aside from a little up and down play (really no worse than stock) I am resting easy now lol. Thank goodness, there was no way I would've spent $200 on levers for either of those bikes.😄

Got a pair of foldable, extendable lever for 25 quid on amazon, I've bought like 4 sets on all my different bikes, absolutely good quality, simple and robust design, nothing to fail on there, on the other hand, my XT600 had a set of ASV levers on it (they are like 80 quid EACH if i'm not mistaken), one time the bike fell off the kickstand and landed on the bars, i pick it back up, nothing special, about 20 mins later when i go to leave at the 3rd or so redlight trying to stop, going to pull the clutch in, lever snaps off and made my bike almost jump into the intersection... Great video! Thanks :). At first, I was skeptical - "Oh great, another retailer trying to convince me to buy expensive stuff" - but what you said made total sense! Also, it was awesome that you were very respectful and made it clear you had no ill will against China, but these motorcycle levers are just dangerous. Before watching this, I was completely unaware of the axial master cylinder/lever setup, having ridden mostly dirt bikes. That being said, I believe there is room for some clarification. For this axial master cylinder/lever setup, the Chinese quality control makes these levers DANGEROUS. Even with modification and maintenance to make it smooth and tight, I am not sure how the materials would wear. HOWEVER, for simpler levers, like those on dirt bikes, without the axial design, Chinese levers should be totally fine IF you check them out to make sure they are structurally sound and don't bind at the pivot point in the master cylinder or perch. Sure, they will have more slop and be generally less refined, but they should work fine. Thanks for the great video! Cheers

I think that's pretty cavalier, considering we're talking about something that could catastrophically fail at any moment. I'll save money by buying cheap chinese made knockoffs when it's a wallet or sunglasses, but when it's something that you need to depend on to keep you safe, buyer beware.
@Bhg265
@Bhg265 5 жыл бұрын
You could apply that rationale to a great many parts on a motorcycle. Don't get me wrong, I think you absolutely SHOULD apply said rationale liberally, as motorcycles are inherently dangerous. But regardless, an aluminum bar is an aluminum bar. The line-bearing-housing interaction needs to be seated correctly, lubed, and obviously to fit with integrity. If that is the case, worry not. Either way, giving your money to STG is a good decision, so that's another plus to the expensive levers. STG takes good care of us all.

ive never had any problems with "cheap" ebay billet levers and ive used them on most of my bikes since i started riding back in 1991. used them on my suzuki katanas, gsxr's, rf900 and now my kawasaki zx14r. love them. i make sure to use synthetic grease on all of the "friction points" to make sure they always operate smoothly and blue threadlock on the nut under the levers so it has no chance of vibrating off.

I use to stand by Chinese levers; they can definitely get the job done for the avg street rider. After converting my bike to track-only though, I was throwing the Chinese levers out by noon and putting the OEM ones back on! The play that you showed in this video is important if you're looking for the absolute most precise and smooth lever actuation. For me, with a quick-shifter, the up/down play in the (clutch) lever wasn't very bothering. My problems with the Chinese levers came when I started to heavily brake into the corners. There is SO much flex in the lever when you squeeze the piss out of it. It actually gave so much that I had to adjust my levers another 1-2 clicks, which was uncomfortable, but gave me enough stroke to not bottom out! It was crazy. I'm sticking with OEM from now on... I might do a shorty lever on the clutch side and I do I'm definitely going with a name-brand like Pazzo, CRG, etc.

I had the same thing happen to my CBR 1000RR when I bought it. Bought some levers off eBay and went for a ride and only made it about 300 yards and my front brake lock up. Each time I squeeze the lever the more it lock. I actually had to Walk home and get my wrench and swap out the levers on side of the street to even ride the bike home. If I would have made it to the interstate which was about 3 miles away it would have been really bad. I pray that I never made it. But I will never buy Chinese eBay or Amazon levers again. NEVER..... So I agree with this video 100%. Saving a few bucks isn't worth crashing a 14000 bike or worse losing my life over it.

Best thing to do is spread to word to everyone to not buy cheap knock offs. I don't doubt the level of Quality on a expensive line of levers is excellent. They have gorgeous products. Those are premium features that not even OEM levers have. OEM also tend to have a bit of play. I bought some nice Spiegler lines from you guys over a year ago May 2017 for my FZ1 with R1 front end fork conversion and I run them with Chinese lever and M/C. Zero problems. I also bought a used R1 that also had Chinese levers on them and they had been on the bike a long time with no issue. My brother has a 2015 R1 with them with out issues and my friend has a Triumph Street Triple that he picked used up from a shop with those type of levers already on it. All of them have seen track days and canyon/mountain rides without issue. Just by looking at the comments on here its like everyone thinks this happens all the time. If this is the cause then shouldn't it happen 100% of the time? Are those the actual levers on the customers bike? Were they tested to in fact prove this is the issue.? R&D is not done like that. And if they are truly dangerous levers why could you see them on an old clapped out bike? Dangerous is dangerous. If they are the true issue they shouldn't be on any bike. Cost of the bike is irrelevant to cost of life. Making statements like clip ons breaking under brake pressure? Support the products you sell . That's good business sense. You guys are a quality seller which is why I made a purchase from you after seeing your video also. But don't use hearsay and scare tactics and say I love Chinese people "BUT"..

Nothing in this video has been misrepresented, these levers caused the brakes to lock on the R6. I did not do this to scare people, I did it to share something I feel needs to be shared man. You are correct not all of them have issues. That said ask yourself if you want to be the guy who's brakes lock up and you fall because they did? It is also a fairly safe bet these products are not backed by any product liability insurance. While I do not know that for a fact I will say it would be very difficult to cover the expense of said insurance when you are selling a set of levers for $40. @@deathwish8339 Porsche and Ferrari break down. We own BMW and Audi's in the family and have recalls. It happens. Nothing is perfect 100% of the time. I'm not saying the Premium Stuff isn't amazing. Ball Bearing in the adjuster is cool.But once you adjust the lever to your comfort do you ever change it? The factory OEM doesn't have that feature , so comparing it to another brand and saying its not as good because it doesnt have that feature is a bit silly. Now looking at the pivot bushing design that Brian Van pointed out IS different from the Brembo design on my R1 and the Brembo RCS design that is fairly common on many bikes. SO with the rotating bushing being tight as BV pointed out he may be right. But that is not every design .And I'm sure that you could free that bushing up fairly easy IF that was a common issue.Should you have to free a bushing? NO, but like any motorcycle maintenance it wouldn't hurt to check an make sure everything is smooth. As I looked at the comments I saw that there was a blanket response that everything NOT from a premium brand was unsafe. Should you support the premium brands since they put in the R&D that is often copied? Sure if you like. But Even the OEM copy each other as well. As far strength is concerned, all levers break in crashes regardless of make. Like I said, this not a knock to STG as I am a paying customer and follow their page.
@sportbiketrackgear
@sportbiketrackgear 5 жыл бұрын
@@chrisjones7281 Thanks for taking the time to leave this! You could 100% free up that bushing if you had enough knowledge and experience to see the need to do so. The reality is most riders do not have said knowledge nor should they need to, the levers should simply me made to the correct tolerances. I am not saying only premium brands are safe, I am saying these MSZ levers have shit tolerances and have caused the front brake to lock on several bikes (multiple comments in this video already noting brake locking). I feel best practice when shopping for brake components, levers, handlebars, rearsets and drive line components is to stick with known brands that have proven themselves to perform. Taking it a step further I also believe we should all support brands to invest in the research and development that works towards making this sport better. The motorcycle industry is very unique when you compare it to others out there. You won't find many people who make their living in this industry living in a mansion or flying in a private jet. Never even thought it could be a lever problem and had the calipers checked, cleaned and taken care of. Took it to a track the next week and, whilst it didn't lock up because I wasn't braking aggressively, it stayed on for a while and I had to stop by the side of the track for a while to let the calipers free up. In China, they put big names on those crap and sell them at high rates. You can't really tell the differences cuz for most ppl we don't know what the authentic ones look or feel like. I hate to say this, but people can buy good things from China when those things don't require quality material or precision. Here in China, we have a motorcycle company tear a Honda cb500x apart, copied everything and changed the look a little and they say they made a new bike. Sad thing is that crap is having endless problems. It's really funny cuz it's just like a student copied No.1's homework and still failed class.

K Mason well said. Am from southAfrica but I live and work in China now! I have bought very many goods with big names but on delivery the goods are crap on quality! On the 5th of this month(5.4.2019) I bought a brand new sport bike. I think it’s called horizon am not sure of its proper name @$3400. (Us Dollars). As I talk now the thing can’t move. It’s at a repair shop now. I broke a valve in the engine coz I tried to race it a bit! Taking quick tight twisties Change gears up and down so fast. I only rode it for 160miles. Now I have to spend another $980 to get it back on the road .. but why do we have to suffer in the hands of these ruthless money minded suckers ?? They don’t care about product quality. But only want to make profit! And worst of all The dealership won’t cover the damage! Am so disappointed

I got two pairs of those chinese levers because I'm learning motogymkhana so I drop my bikes very often. I got the foldable ones and so far they work fine even after the occasional tip over but man you are right. What would you suggest if you knew you would be dropping your bike often? Nice brake lever guards and OEM levers? Nice foldable OEM levers?
@sportbiketrackgear
@sportbiketrackgear 5 жыл бұрын
Hand guards do help to protect the bike in a tip over as do folding levers. That said having one of both does not guarantee the levers won't be damaged in a fall. IMO installing a set of these levers on your bike is a bad idea. Better to leave the OEM if you don't want to invest in a quality set of aftermarket levers. Another option for you to consider would be installing a shorty set of levers on the bike. They are far less likely to be damaged in a crash than a standard length lever. - Van

Agree 100%, people seem to think that they can pay 10% and get 100%. Not how it works! I treat the mods i make for my bike (cosmetics excluded) as if i were buying new tires, i'd not skimp out on those, so neither will i for a lever or rearset, or chain...

Yup ordered one from Amazon. I was scared when I watched this video and never bought them until recently I pulled plug after many recommending for my motorcycle. By that time I remember the watching video but didnt remember the reason not to buy. Well my break levers are so fucking simple, just a simple lever that can is held by original nut and bolt. No other bearing and stuff. After watching the video, I am so glad I bought them and not wasted $200 on CRZ. They are worth it.

On my way to work this morning my brakes locked up on my recently bought ‘16 R1S. Very fortunately to have been able to slow down in time and get footing but the bike was too heavy due to the slope of the road so I had to lay her down. Go figure it was due to MZS levers I installed. Last time I buy cheap aftermarket parts. I had thought I just did a bad install. I know this video is old but you saved a life. OEM levers are going back on. Thank you Brian.

CycleCruza got them $20 Ebay levers on his CBR1000RR with no issue, I had a set on my Ninja 300 no problem. Still using a set of $20 Ebay levers on my new Fz07, so far so good, the pull fells amazing. I can say that 95% of levers on the market r prob made in China. Not paying for $120 for a single lever. LOL

Whatever tickles your pickle man. Over the years I have installed several different brands of levers on a wide range of bikes. My opinion is based on first hand experience and information learned over an extended period of time, not 1 set of levers on one bike. There are already several comments on this 2 day old video noting brakes locking up caused by the lever. Not worth the risk. Using these levers is about as smart as wrapping your junk with knock off condoms IMO. - Van

Thanks (from Melbourne Australia🌏 -2022) for this info. Neighbor had this exact prob on his ZX14. After watching this vid, You/ I diagnosed his problem......crappy levers (that I didn't know he'd installed). When I asked what he'd done since I'd changed his brake pads and bled them, he said "Nothing..... Except, Oh, I changed the levers". Put old lever back on and Problem solved. Thanks guys.

Love my MZS levers, spending 10% of my bikes total value on levers just seems foolish - not all cheap levers, not even all MZS levers will have this issue you're talking about. Mine don't even have that bushing - they have a spring. Work awesome and I would love to see a CRG take as much abuse as us dual sporters put onto our levers... lol. Bet you anything if I had something like those on my bike I'd have a broken perch and that's way worse than a lever breaking.

Bottom line, your customer installed a bad part, then he rode around on it. This is 100% resolved by anyone with just a little common sense on install. And it needs to be said, that ANYONE who does maintenance on a bike without thorough safe review of the work, should not be riding bikes to begin with. SMH

Every brake locking/cheap lever problem I've seen so far has been with radial master cylinders. If you don't have a radial master, you'll most likely be fine. If you do have a radial master, there's a pretty good chance you'll still be fine but you have to take a long hard look at your set up and make sure it's working right.
@sportbiketrackgear
@sportbiketrackgear 5 жыл бұрын
Radial masters are the common denominator for the locking brakes at this point for sure. That said not everyone knows the difference between radial and axial. Let's not forget the horrible tolerances these levers have. Better to leave the OEM levers on then install these MZS, they have better feel. - Van
