Evangelist David Wilkerson gained fame as the preacher who won countless gang members to Jesus and established the most successful drug recovery program Teen Challenge. His book The Cross and the Switchblade was a bestseller that was made into a movie, and he followed it up in 1973 with the controversial book The Vision. In this video I give you a glimpse into the man behind the ministry.

I'm Rod Saunders, founder of Jew and Greek. I’m a musician, web developer, and a student of philosophy and economics. I recently published my first book on Amazon entitled Defending the Faith: Word of Faith Apologetics. It’s a response to the numerous charges against and misrepresentations of the Word of Faith movement and theology. I also have a CD of original music on CD Baby entitled Gates of Pearl. “Jew and Greek” is a good name because the two civilizations that influenced Western civilization the most were those of the Judeo-Christian and Greek worlds. From the Jews we received our values and a monotheistic theology, and from the Greeks we got philosophy which brought us science, sports, the arts, democracy, and economics. As a result I discuss all of the above in this blog and in my videos.

I’d like to make a correction. It was not Don who became an alcoholic, it was their brother Jerry. (They are my uncles) I wish my grandparents would have known they were still allowed to dance after they became saved!

All you have to do is listen to Pastor David Wilkerson's messages. He did NOT water down the word of God. @BingoNamo-gb8pz That is funny if he said that. If he did, I'm sure it was tongue in cheek. For instance, you don't throw out the baby with the dirty bath water. Sorry for all the metaphors, but I'm sure you get it. I don't know about you, but I was raised Pentecostal, and I still am Pentecostal. But thank God my church believes and operates in the gifts discussed in the New Testament while eliminating the parts that were more on the legalistic side. Good night for me. Work comes early tomorrow, Lord willing.

@@kenshilohhello Ken God bless 🙏 I've been listening to more of his videos since and also to few others, and I think one's connection to God has a lot to do with the purity of one's heart and spirit and his mind also. David Wilkerson was one of the most pure, he didn't do a lot of miracles though, I remember when his son healed him by faith. There is one thing I don't understand, there are people who are connected to God's power of healing for example, or the power of casting out demons, or prophecy etc but their minds and hearts are not as pure as they should be. So it can be tricky sometimes to understand who these people truly are in truth/spirit, because they don't have to be evil to not be (found) good, if you know what I mean. I'm not talking about David's son, I'm talking about people performing different miracles, and prophecy etc in God's name thes days. I think no one sees God exactly the same way, most see God thru their wants needs accomplishments life situations family etc, and all people I talked or listened to so far, every single person thinks God is the one they know or formed an idea about based on personal experience bible teachings and other peoples experiences. But God is everything. Thank you again and may God bless you and your family and keep you always. 🙏🙏🔥🔥

10 yrs ago I installed Audio Sermons Index. Wilkerson sermons were there. I'd known about him for years, I've Baptist background. Because of all the seeker friendly watered down sermons on TV etc ...David Wilkerson gave me a revival of the heart. I've known many backsliden souls that found his hard hitting Holiness Preaching a breath of fresh air. I bring up his sermons more then anyone else's. I've often prayed, "Lord...please give me David Wilkerson's spirit of conviction...he's done with it".

Shame how the way David still preached and ministered the love of God in spite of all the personal trials he faced, wasn't even mentioned. Wife Gwen's many battles with cancer, as well as his daughter and grand daughter. With his mentioned flaws, one of the most faithful men of God I have ever come across. While so personally discouraged, his only goal was to lift up and encourage so many of God's children. I still listen to one of his sermons every Sunday afternoon and it is a literal refreshment to my soul---He is one of the Lord's greatest gifts to the contemporary church even though he is no longer physically with us.

@@sarahsamuel1270 I didn't not hear anything negative in this video at all. I thought it was a very balanced view of the Man of God, David Wilkerson. Every person has strengths and weaknesses. @@sarahsamuel1270 I have been questioning Wilkerson's because of some false prophecy and an his endorsement of false preachers from the prosperity movement. I attended David wilkerson's Church Times Square Church for many many years. I heard him say with my own ears in his sermon one morning " I can't believe how hard and judgmental I was." When he grew older he grew much more gentle and mellow and tenderhearted. You could describe him as "broken bread and poured out wine" at that time. I enjoyed him possibly more so in his later years but still listen online to his earlier fiery sermons. Although I didn't always agree with his theology, I had great respect for him as a man of God. He was the real deal and one of a kind. By the way, he did miss it on some of his prophecies which did not come to pass on the dates he was predicting. I happen to believe that many, if not all of them were true prophecies which will yet come to pass, only not on the dates he gave. Yes, date setting is not a good idea with prophecies.

His return to New York seemed to be marked by a connection with people. What a blessed great story. I believe in prophesy and yet I also believe those of us who seek to hear from God do so imperfectly and are influenced by our own hearts. "We prophesy in part." I am so glad to hear he ended well.

Thank you for this, Rod. I've watched so many pastors get skewered lately, it's been quite a year for it as some have predicted. But some stand the test of time, and he was a man of his word. Showed us his faith by his worls and did not go apostate by speaking abainst the Spirit. Just the opposite.

I think to classify him as complicated is not totally accurate..What he left in the wake of his life separated him from the rest...Like King David he built an enduring house...His ministry lives on...very few can say that..

Very interesting! Thanks for putting it together. I wonder if the young men that he was confronting about preaching and smoking pot continued in the ministry. That was an amazing move of God and so many started on the streets and went onto great ministries.

I'm a pentecostal from european heritage (Dutch pentecostal) particularly in my church we staunchly hold the prrinciple of faith for 'divine HEALTH and holiness teaching so in the matter of faith we are certainly inline with Kenneth E Hagin ( i personally see him as a pentecostal since for me word of faith is not a theology in itself but a biblical principal still under the umbrella of pentecostal theology where some pentecostals like my church giving it more emphasis while some others dont) and in the matter of holiness my church kind of inline with David Wilkerson's view.

Word Faith is an offshoot of the Charismatic movement, which is an offshoot of the Pentecostal movement. You are right, although many traditional Pentecostal churches wouldn't support the extremes of Word Faith theology. D.R. McConnell was correct when he said that the charismatic movement isn't monolithic

@@kevinevans8892 the Dutch founder of my pentecostal denomination had acquaintance with Smith Wigglesworth who taught faith like the late Kenneth E Hagin , how could such an icon of pentecostal movement as Wigglesworth be considered 'extreme' ? Speaking about Hagin concerning his teaching on material blessings as i read his book the ' Midas Touch' , i find no 'extreme' not like those 'extreme' hyper-prosperity guys.. to say Word of Faith as 'extreme' is just like painting the same broad brush to Reformed people definingn them indiscriminately as faultfinding pharisees .
@kevinevans8892
@kevinevans8892 Жыл бұрын
@@geertjekneefel5252i'm Charismatic FYI. Hagin's Midas Touch was too little; too late. Those extremists within the WOF were really his spiritual offshoots who took his theology to it's logical conclusion. I consider Smith wigglesworth to be well within the classical Pentecostal movement. He was not word Faith. Wigglesworth died in the 1940s -- years before the advent of the WOF movement came along. Hagin might have been inspired by wigglesworth, regarding faith for healing. But that might be all the contribution wigglesworth indirectly gave to the WOF movement. Furthermore, many classical Pentecostals do not endorse WOF theology, such as the Assemblies of God denomination; the late Charles Farah from ORU (a Pentecostal university), to list a few. So are these Pentecostals Pharisees too? The WOF movement does not hold a monopoly on the Holy Spirit sir/madame

@@kevinevans8892 sorry but do u read my assertion carefully ? I've said accusing ALL wof as extreme is just the same as stating ALL reformed as faultfinding pharisees . Let me again put it clearer in another word : TO SAY ALL WOF AS EXTREME IS JUST THE SAME AS SAYING ALL AMERICANS AS GUNHOLDER TEXANS ! Do u honestly interpret that the meaning of my previous explanation as accusing ALL reformed to be faultfinding pharisees ? Have u ever heard the saying dont throw the baby along with the bathwater ? I know a fact about the 'great rebuke' around year 2000's behind the story before Midas Touch being published where Kenneth E Hagin gathered almost all of those 'hyper-prosperity' preachers and rebuked them for their 'extremes' , if most of them have chosen to dismiss the rebuke of their spiritual father then it would be the matter between them and God . FYI i like Charles Farah and his protege is Paul L King Phd a Charismatic-Christian Alliance theologian and after a deep theological study Paul King published a book about WOF theology with the title ONLY BELIEVE where it objectively and 'constructively' separates the pure teachings and the errors within the WOF. I recommend u to read it . Personally i dont like to call WOF as 'theology' , it's just a simple plain biblical principle , maybe because it's just my old school pentecostal taste speaking but again to call it as some sort of 'theology' make it sounds 'sophisticated and dogmatic' it makes as if one graduates from Rhema Bible College or ORU then automatically he/she can do miracles , it makes impression as if u dogmatically and intellectually embrace WOF theology u would automatically living in miraculous realm . True word of faith is dynamic personal interaction between us with the Holy Spirit & The Word , in fact i got this conclusion from reading Hagin's book ' How To Be Lead By The Holy Spirit ' , i recommend u also this book to read. By the way since u admit that u yourself are NOT pentecostal not to mention 'old school' pentecostal i truly understand why u dont understand how old school pentecostals see ''theology' , we the old schoolers unlike the moderrn pentecostals dont 'systematize' our biblical principle into 'systematize theology' even there's a time in the past when we thought theology was just term for humaniistic wisdom that limitates the Holy Spirit , so again the most of PRINCIPLES in WOF are undoubtedly historically still within the scope of pentecostal principles , and another correction for u i've never said WOF principle MONOPOLIZE pentecostal understanding .. logically speaking there's a different between WITHIN THE SCOPE and MONOPOLIZE , surely intellectually speaking i expect u to understand that to say Coptics Orthodox are WITHIN THE SCOPE of ecumenical christianity wont be the same as saying that Coptics MONOPOLIZE the majority understanding of whole christianity. I'm denominationally not AOG or COG pentecostals but certainly NOT Oneness in theology , usually american old school pentecostals being classified around those threes . I'm just an old school 'divine health believing' - holiness living and tongue speaking pentecostal .
