Thanks for your lovely comment, Toubab. I've had the talent vs skill conversation with people many times as well! I'm of the opinion that talent is the product of skill and therefore of practice. I hear the counter-arguments as well and maybe there's also a message or vibe that could be unique to individuals that can itself be an impossible aspiration, I'm not sure. I can't see how we could ever know for sure and so at the very least, in the spirit of avoiding self-sabotage it makes sense to put the complete emphasis on practice and passion, I agree. 😎 Really appreciate you sharing your perspective!

I think ab early example of a barrier I noticed was as simple as dedicating a space to create art and to leave my things ohty so I didn't need to set up before starting every time. @@TimSchofieldArt creating space to make art sounds like the focus of a separate video. In my youth, the kitchen table was "my studio." Having to set up, then to pack it all away certainly is a barrier I’m familiar with. My living room is now my studio since children are grown and no one goes in there. Although, I still have to straighten up when it’s untidy as I can’t work in chaos.

Great to hear you like the videos, thank you! Regarding the challenge of not painting until you know why you're starting, I've heard something similar to this before. I find it helpful to think of my abstract landscapes as part of a broader project which has its own purpose / goal. The ideas have grown a bit over a couple of years but have mostly stayed consistent. That way I always have a reason to paint them. 😁

One time when I was a teenager I was determined to learn to draw realistic anatomy. I had a couple of books and I would do maybe two or three pages of bodypart sketch studies every day for about a year. Stylistically it couldn't have been further from what I do now, but I probably felt a bit closer to it at the time. I think styles can shift and change, but it's a bit like watching an iceberg melt. It happens so gradually that you don't really see it in real time. The actual icebergs in the real world are still melting too quickly, obviously.

Hi Pat 🙂 I think that's a totally normal and very relatable stage to be at. I understand the urge to have a piece that you view as a complete success and I think there are two things worth considering on that. First (and the closest I'll get to a platitude) is that patience and persistence are important; although it sounds from your comment like you have that figured pretty well. Secondly, there are pieces I completed in the past which I saw as a 'success' but now look back at with a different perspective. It's not to day that I dislike them, and I still remember why I was happy with them at the time, but I wouldn't be satisfied with the same result today. That feeling of 'success' when it comes to a finished piece can be very slippery - I see flaws that I would change in pretty much every painting I complete still today. It's another great reason to hang on to old paintings and look back to compare. With that said, that feeling of achievement and growth when it everything you've learned comes together in a seamless way to produce a painting that you're deeply satisfied with does happen. For me, it's almost always when I least expect it. Ironically, it's when I'm paying the least attention or trying the craziest experiment and perhaps that's because it feels like the pressure is off. I'm currently working on my next video which is about perfectionism and creativity; I hope there are some useful insights for you in there. I'm glad that you like the video and really appreciate your comment. 😁

I do keep most of my old paintings (unless, well, you know!) and I can see the growth. It also makes sense that that moment of satisfaction with my art may come when I least expect it. I know that I am never giving up. Besides, I love the process and the everything that makes watercolor magic :)

Hey Ed! Thanks so much 🙂 the tool I use is a silicone spatula- the kind that you buy to clean out a pan in the kitchen! I've gone through a number of tools and I find silicone to be a great texture to work with. I hope this helps! 🙂
