Welcome to Episode 2 of the Ford-ism’s series, in this episode we’re talking about the infamous Ford “Highboy” AKA any 1967-77.5 F250 4x4.

Outstanding young man, you are about 98% right. And thank you for the clarification. The younger generation needs to know. The only inaccuracy is that the F250 “highboy” chassis actually started in 66 on year only for that body style and all used a 3000 or 3600 pound Dana 44 front axle utilizing trunnion ball on the end of the axle, the open knuckle Dana 44, 3600 pound heavy duty F250 axle actually came out in 1976 with the first year. Introduction of disc brakes and carried over 1/2 year into Early production 77 when Ford changed up the chassis, married the transmission and transfer case. and a reverse rotation, high pinion front differential. Other than those 1 1/2 years you are actually correct 76 and Early 77 F250 front axles are nearly impossible to find parts for. I’m 62 years old I’ve been building and working on these trucks since I was a teenager. With that said, I think you did a great job, dispelling many of the myths that seem to float around the Internet.

Glad you clarified that because I have a 66 250 4x4 with the 352 but also had 456-455 gearing and the 63 bed style and it is certainly a highboy

I bought a 1977 high boy bran new f250 70.000 miles on it now plan on changing under truck with f 350 running gear and 54 in bogger tires street driveling only

So who decided on the Highboy years, 59-66 was the same setup. And I've always questioned 77 1/2, I've never seen nor heard of a 351/400 with a divorced transfer case

I have 75 f250 ranger xlt. Its got 60 in the front that i thought was out of a 76, but maybe i was told wrong and its out of a 77. I need to pull it out of the grass, its much to pretty to just sit. Thanks for the information.

Im redoing my dads 73 highboy just got it moving under its own power recently after a full nut bolt restoration still need to finish the body work yet but its 100 percent rust free now all arizona body parts on it now the truck lived its life in pennsylvania so the original body was pretty much a loss cause rust wise

Interesting enough it was Chryslers own New Process Gear that supplied all full size trucks Ford and G.M. with transfer cases and manual transmissons.

I sure did. Need to get the tires switched around and get it to the mechanic. It runs. But the last time the guy started it. Started a small fire under the hood burnt the spark plug wires

Why was the frame narrower?

It’s not that the entire frame was narrower, it just didn’t flare 4” outtwards towards the rear of the frame like the 2wd and lighter model 4x4’s did. They used ladder style frames that ran parallel because it was a carryover from an old design, so it saved them money. Eventually the frames were widened 4” in the rear to accommodate fuel tanks, since in cab tanks had been outlawed, that’s my guess at least.

@Bent Bronco I have an 78 f250 that identifies as a 4wd. I was hoping to eventually make it that way. It sounds like the front would swap over easily, but the back would need spring perches widened on the axle. I'm just guessing.

I've got a 77 with two fuel doors in the box plus the tank in the cab. On the floor beside the seat is a valve to switch tanks. The only tank that's left is in the cab.

@@wesleycooper2647 The later Highboys came with blanked off fuel door(s) because of the frame issues. The Highboys frame didn't accommodate under-bed tanks. I own a 75 Highboy who I bought from the original owner, and I have the original build sheet. 75s have one blanked off fuel door in the back because they have an extra frame cross member where the other trucks did not. It had the two extra saddle tanks and the fuel switch (which I believe were after market) before I started modifying the truck. On a side not, I converter the truck to four wheel disk brakes, because everyone said you can't convert the closed knuckle Dana 44 HD to disk, so I did it anyways. Still closed knuckle, but four wheel disk! This truck is a daily driver.

The frames are the same as a f350 2wd of the same years with the exception of the cross member under the motor on the 2wd and the length of the frame from back of the cab to the rear axle.... And don't think frod offered a automatic till 1976

67? I believe that was the only year that wasn’t 4.10, but have heard there was a 3.73 option one year possibly

Yea i agree they “added” a 4 inch block in the rear that would lift the rear 4 inches mine sits level so i am going with 4 inches of added height

Haha thiis iis great. And with chevy stuff, idiots call all 61/62 2 doors bubbletops. All 55 - 57 chevy cars are bel airs...etc.. So thanks for sharing knowledge. But it won't counteract the ocean of know it alls and bandwagon enthusiasts wirh the wrong info., un fortunately lol
