The problem is there's going to be no pushback in the media. The closest we've gotten is Neville saying he doesn't think Southgate is the right fit. No pundit working in British media and no British journalist is going to say the words "Gareth Southgate isn't good enough for Manchester United" because he's the England manager, going into a tournament where England are one of the favourites. The remit has come down from on high to be positive and nobody is going to say anything that puts the England manager in a negative lights. Everyone has to go with the lie that he's an elite manager because to say otherwise is to say that the England manager isn't up to scratch and we all know the daily rags will have a field day with that. So it's down to the fans. Only the fans can say the truth about Southgate and they have to be loud. I was disappointed that Jay didn't go all in on the Overlap on the Southgate issue. He should have asked if any other fan would want Southgate at their club. I'd be surprised to see a hand raised.

I’m in complete denial about this. INEOS and their people aren’t stupid. In fact quite the opposite. What better way to get the majority of the fan base behind Ten Hag than to threaten replacing him with one of the worst managers in world football. I think they keep Ten Hag around for next season at the very least and make a decision from there

My favourite post Fergie seasons by a mile, so far, have been when it was good under Ole, before Ronaldo and before the same players were run into the ground. There were some great wins and he made us feel proud again. I hope we get that feeling back under Ten Hag, that Liverpool game brought some of that pride back again. Southgate? …… I would be devastated if that happened. At United we take calculated risks and we play exciting attacking football with flair and passion, that’s why he will never fit our club.

If these rumours are true, then I have serious doubts about the Ineos management structure for United. Southgate's deficiencies as England manager are obvious to anyone with even a smidgen of football knowledge. If he is appointed as United manager, that will see us out of all European competition for as long as he stays, as I expect we would finish in the bottom half of the table as often as the top half. If they decide they have to get rid of EtH, then I hope they bring Ole back.

Southgate is maybe a motivational speaker than a tactician, and most likely gonna get the sack in his first season back in the EPL regardless of the team.

I'd say Southgate is a lot like Ole but without United in his veins which was the only reason Ole got the job including a good start. Still Ole didn't win anything at United and getting Southgate would be an even bigger mistake. Liking someone isn't the same as hiring someone and I would be stunned if INEOS hire Southgate. Anyway, I believe Ten Hag will turn things around which he's already doing (only Arsenal and City better than United in the Prem in 2024) and will still be the United manager next season. But the transfers in and out have to be a lot better and in greater numbers than last season if United is going to progress next season. I really hope Ten Hag and INEOS agree!

I completely agree with you, Stephen. Southgate is a boring, timid, tactically inept manager who is the complete opposite of what we need at United. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could have developed into the right man. He should never have been sacked. He was building an impressive team until he was forced to accept Ronaldo.

Personally, I like Gareth Southgate as an England manager, but managing an international side just isn’t the same. They will play say 15-20 matches a year, depending on if there’s a tournament or not, with big gaps in between and you get to pick the best of the best from each a range of clubs. That just doesn’t compare to 38 PL games, plus FA Cup, Carabao Cup plus, hopefully, European games. The fans and media can be for and against the coach on a weekly basis! Similar there are plenty of examples of successful club managers who don’t succeed at international level. The performance targets and expectations are wildly different. I don’t know how much weight there is to current speculation, but to consider someone to lead a club of the scale of MUFC who hasn’t managed in the Premiership for 15 years - and it’s changed a lot in that time, and has best position of 12th would seem to be the polar opposite of the performance culture the team from INEOS are trying to bring to their new role within MUFC. Makes no sense to me.

Maguire only playing cos he was already picked prior to United, Rashford was top scorer yet didn’t start the following game and Mainoo only got selected only after the backlash and even after he got Man of the Match against Belgium, he still managed to find a negative thing to say and I quote “he played well but left our midfield open”

I’m hoping it was some weird PR thing or random leak. That being said, the story broke before the two England games, so there was his audition. Had he won with style maybe people would have got behind the idea. But, he wet the bed. This story can now RIP. If England win a trophy it will be down to the players not the manager. This England team is at a level unseen. They are all managed by world class club managers. I wish Southgate the best, seems like a decent human. However, not at Old Trafford thanks.

In time, ETH will have more than 50% of the team from the academy...definitely the way to go for a club in financial distress. Southgate would be an unmitigated disaster and set the club back another 5 yrs.

I dont know what ETH has done done to even deserve the sack. All this after the epic win against Liverpool with the academy gradsdoing it and we are linked to Blackhole who rather plays Henderson over Bellingham. Yes ETH could have done better but injuries have ravaged us this season. The only staff that needs sacking at United is the medical staff!

INEOS need to take stock of things. The man who managed Middlesbrough to their only ever major trophy is currently a member of the current United coaching team - so let’s not consider employing Southgate who took Middlesbrough to the Championship!!!
