Gareth Southgate has said in-form Arsenal defender Ben White asked not to be selected for England and, while the door is open, it would now be "difficult" for him to make the Euros squad.
The defender has been in outstanding form this season for the Premier League title-challengers and on Thursday it was announced he has signed a new long-term deal to stay at Arsenal.
However, the 26-year-old was once again absent when the England squad to face Brazil and Belgium was announced later that day. He hasn't represented his country since leaving the 2022 Qatar World Cup early.

You’re forgetting the point that he will never play a second under Southgate. He has his favourites, irrespective of form and that’s become very obvious over the last couple of seasons

Southgate does have favorites but even if he didn't, during the world cup Ben White wouldn't start over Kyle Walker or Kieran Trippier. In that particular case, favoritism is not the issue

For a coach to question a footballer who has overcame illness as a child, a gruelling youth programme, playing every minute of every game for Marcelo Bielsa in the Championship, earning a move to Arsenal and being their best CB, moving to RB and becoming one of the best in that position in the league, and earning the respect of a taskmaster manager like Arteta and all of his teammates who themselves work punishingly hard to win games, is honestly disgraceful. For Steve Holland to question his drive in football is ONLY terrible coaching and man management.

Harry Kane is one of the best players England has had yet has won nothing of magnitude in his career so that point is completely redundant. His career path is irrelevant to judging him now. Saka and Foden were benchwarmers and academy players at that point, Bellingham was at Birmingham City, Rice was a backup CB for West Ham so yet again where a player was 4/5 years ago is completely irrelevant to their ability. He may not be better than Kyle Walker but he's for sure better than Maguire. He's played CB most of his career and could easily start for England in that position.

Why is this a problem? Ben White clearly isnt happy with the Southgate and Holland and tgey clearly aren't happy with Ben White. If they were, White wouldn't reject a call up, Holland would treat White with some respect and Southgate would actually start him or give him more minutes. If White doesn't want to warm the bench behind players he's outworked, outclassed and outperformed then hes entitled to reject that, it saves Whute wasting his time and effort where he isnt appreciated and gives the spot to somebody who wants to play for England.

Why was there nothing said in previous squads when he wasn’t picked only now. Clearly something has gone on at the World Cup that he feels is unforgivable and doesn’t want to be in that environment but all of a sudden we have injuries at right back and now we are trying to turn him into some massive traitor, leave the lad alone. It's easy for Southgate and everyone to now claim that "Oh, I would have liked to pick him, he was going to make the squad". But in actual fact, no one can be sure that he was going to get picked. as he has overlooked him so many times before and went with players who were in much poorer form and who offered way less than Ben White. Why is Garth allowed to pick out of form players, players who don’t even get game for there clubs, players who have left elite football to retire. White should be allowed to make whatever choice he wants, like lets not pretend that if white left that Southgate would ever even play him. Southgate picks his favorites regardless of form, accomplishments, tactical flexibility. also the irony about Josh crying about the choices of another man, that doesn`t involve him at all is very ironic, considering he tries to frame it as White being weak or something from not going along with what he did view as disrespect from Holland. everything he tries to put on White can just as easily be applied to Josh, be a grown up and just accept the choices of someone else in this case White.

Many players turned down playing for England it's not the first time, Scholes and Carrick are good examples. Representing your country is an honor but when its not that beneficial for you like sitting on the bench serving no purpose, I'd pass. England will win NOTHING with this bum in charge

Also, i said what he said at the end, will likely be a new coach as Gareth contact end in Dec so unless slab head lifts the trophy... there'll be a new coach next year. Ben White doesn't get a look in you have Southgate picking his favourites every tournament, White has been playing with an injury as well, why would he risk his entire season to go wirh England for 2 friendlies when he doesnt get picked for games anyway at the moment but Maguire is a firm starter every single game.. It is Ben Whites choice. Unless you know everything about the situation (which we dont) then we cannot judge. Obviously, he had a falling out with Southgate and his assistant coach. Is there more to it than this? Maybe. But I will say, if it was me, I couldnt be arsed playing a friendly international especially if I have huge fixtures coming up that will make or break my season. No way am I going to risk injury for a pointless friendly international.
