We wasn’t married but engaged for 7 years together for 8 and he married his affair partner. It’s been 4 and a half years since he left me for her, they married 2 years ago and are still together and seem very happy so maybe they are one of the 20% that are meant to be

My sister just got a divorce from a long marriage. Turns out she was having an affair and this guy is 10 years younger than her too. She rushed to get her divorce finalized and after just a couple of months, she and her AP are engaged and she tells me “he’s my soulmate, I never knew love like this existed” etc etc etc etc. she has adult children who are understandably very upset and her ex is devastated. I am not sure how to support her because I think she is in an alternate reality and overly obsessed with this person- it’s like she turned into a 14 year old again!!! But I do love her and want the best for her. So far I’ve been saying I am happy for you, but I am worried you’re moving so fast. I just don’t understand any of this. What should I do to help or am I just watching a figurative car crash happen in slow motion?

Hey! Thanks for your comment. I completely hear your heart AND frustration. It's so hard to watch someone you love make a huge mistake and feel helpless to help them at the same time. Unfortunately, you WILL have to watch the "figurative car crash" and just be there for her when if or when it happens. If she is so consumed by him, she will nit hear your warnings. Worse still, she will see you as an enemy to her ideas of happiness. So in this situation, you have to stand back, but keep your arms open ready to catch her when she needs it. The fantasy bubble will eventually burst - it always does. Then the real test of their relationship will start.

@@AdaezeChiwokoMarriage4Real Thank you so much for your reply!!! It helps me a lot to hear you say this, then at least I'm not conflicted wondering if I should be more harsh with her. I am going to stay supportive but watch mostly from a distance because this is all just so dramatic. I enjoy your content very much, thank you!!

Marriages are made in heaven, affairs are made in hell. Assume there were children. Then the mistress or mist-er is someone that was willing to get someone to break up their own children's family. So that he or she can get sex or whatever else they wanted. Instead of holding out or settling for what is available to them of single people. Even if there were no kids, this is someone who does not honour marriage, they see it as fairly meaningless. When people like this get involved in anything like that, their eye is on their own payoff -- in the end, it's not about anyone else's outcome than their own. They may stick with it -- if the weather changes and it continues to be of interest to them. But they have planned ahead, they are only doing it because they have calculated that on this side their bread is buttered. Love wants someone to be their best self. Affairs are morally corrosive. If you loved someone, you wouldn't put them in an affair. Therefore the people who do that and think they love, do not know what love is.

Exactly! Sometimes people find a better match for themselves down the line! Of course, the proper thing would be to be honest right away, but It doesn’t always happen that way.

Alot off affairs stay together just to prove to everyone they made the right choice. Once they get to the 6/7 year that's the real test (thats the year he starts cheating again)
