I'm glad you got some new girls that are making you happy! Although just FYI most of the breeds you've picked are very dominant! Particularly wynadottes are known to be bossy and at the top of their pecking order. RIR can also be. Just be prepared if you see any bullying issues return. I know you said theyre mostly for eggs/food and not pets so I totally understand why you chose those breeds. But if you wanted a balance between being docile and good laying, you'd probably love barred rocks and black australorps 😇

My chickies are dual purpose breeds. Got isa brown which is a Rhodes island and leghorn hybrid and a black australorp. The australorp started out really skittish but as she’s gotten bigger she’s taken over as the boss. We don’t have any bullying issues but she puts her sister in her place a far but with a stand off and raised hackles. Even though they’re dual purpose for meat and eggs I don’t think I’ll have the heart to butcher them. They’re named mudcake (the australorp) and muffin (the isa brown) and that’s always the first thing we’re told not to do when it comes to life stock. But I raised them from day old chicks and they’re just too sweet and cuddly not to get attached. We got them for the eggs and the garden as their manure is free and they can turn the top soil in garden bed. Another thing my bf thought of as he’s a horticulturist, is the sugarcane mulch I use for their bedding will be soaked with nutrients too and we can reuse it as nutrient rich mulch in the garden. So even when they’re old and have stopped laying I think we’ll keep them around. Our council allows up to 6 poultry before requiring a permit so my plan is to succession raise them. I have 2 now that will stop laying around 4 to 6 years old, so at the 3 year mark I’ll introduce 2 more and again in 3 years after that. Then by the next 3 year mark the first 2 will be ready to go to the big chicken coop in the sky and I’ll be able to get another 2. (Edit: sorry for the ramble, I have ADHD and I got excited to talk about it)

I recently took the urban hen keeping course required for permits in our Edmonton alberta location. I decided to put off getting them until I have more time for care. Thank you for talking honestly about life cycle considerations, management issues, and general challenges. People don't think about the realities of aging birds, reduced egg production, and conflict. Finding new homes isn't a reality in most cases and when unplanned becomes a burden for someone down the line. It makes me reflect on how as an urban society we just expect the municipality to manage our waste, absorb our problems. The introspective exercise of small scale homesteading is a lesson in sustainability on an environmental, social, and financial scale. We have to fix our own problems! I planted all of my biggest cloves, that I grew this year, in to 5 different gardens. I planted in October, every few days and got 122 cloves planted . 166 clives?! Well done! We had 3 weeks of rain but that is perfect for deep draining gardens. I love that you are planning next years garden, now. I am in Malakwa BC in a zone 5B-6A. Only hard necked garlic grows here. I am excited to try your deep pot onion planting this January.

Living Traditions Homestead moved all of their tomatoes to pots and they did really well in Missouri so I think you could get a bountiful harvest going vertival with your trellises. Also, check into companion planting. Tomatoes do really well with a variety of herbs and vegetables. This will help make the most of your space. :)

I love Garlic as I do Onions in Sydney Australia I’ve always grown Soft Neck Garlic, but a few years ago I tried Egyptian Hard Neck which grew well, so I try to grow that each year as well as they have a greater flavour.😊

Hello Bre, love your content. Sometimes chickens get bored. If you can figure it out, put a small swing in the coop or sticks for them to climb on. Also a head of cabbage hung from the ceiling of the coop. They love that. It really does help with the bullying. Also they have to do the hierarchy thing. Lol. Hope this helps.

Hey from Oregon! I love your little homestead. Believe it or not sometimes I wish for a smaller space again as I grow older as acreage requires so much maintenance. We are planting garlic this afternoon in a stretch of sunny weather. I was wondering what all those beautiful terracotta jars are for?

Running out of space is never fun! We really grow in succession and are religious on companion planting because of space. Garlic for example can be grown with many things as a natural pest deterent. It can grow with tomatoes, carrots, Dill, potatoes lettuces, cucumbers, all brassicas, eggplants, beets... so many things to where you don't habe to grow them in blocks you can layout your garden to where they can be planted in an array of places to free up more space for more things. I highly suggest reading Carrots love tomatoes by Louise riotte!

Just remember blood meal takes 3 or 4 months to start working

I’m so sorry about your chickens you know maybe they need more space and get them a separate coop if you have a rooster get them a separate separate coop cause sometimes they’re jealous of them laying other eggs so yeah that’s sad.
