**** I Caught a mistake I made. I was making dinner and had a realization, I never looked up place spacing for my elderberries lol. I'll be moving one of them. Idk what came over me, lol very unlike me not to research like crazy before planting something new, but this day nope I rolled with a idea and yah. I planted these guys too close. I even knew how large they get lol so yah here's me letting you know, I did indeed plant these elderberries wrong but Im fixing it before its a issue lol. Just wanted to let you know not to follow this example.****

You should look into cow peas. They like the heat and can be eaten young and green or dried into black eyed peas. (Or pink eyed peas which is what I'm growing in Florida all summer and they are thriving and giving me beans even in 90+ degree days)

Did you consider using shade cloth over beans during bad heat?? I know they will grow in partial shade so you would probably get more than you got without it. Also. The plants would probably be in mych better shape after the heat breaks. Many fabulous blessings everyone everywhere

Pickled beets on salads are so so yummy. You can also use the powder to make red velvet cake. We've also experimented with breading slices and frying them to make a "schnitzel" and they turned out pretty tasty. Our favorite way is simply roasting them fresh with some salt and served with steak and mashed potatoes.

My favourite way to use Swiss chard is Pan fried in some olive oil with salt, pepper, garlic and green onions as a side with toast and eggs! I just remove the tougher stem piece for that and save it for broth. Jamie Oliver’s minestrone soup is also a great recipe to use some up.

ROASTING is GREAT for ALL VEG, it's my absolute favorite way to eat! 450F time depends on veg, light drizzle of olive oil with ground salt an pepper massaged over veg... roots- potatoes, carrots, beets depending on size about 15 min, thin asparagus about 3 min, small tomatoes 8min....bok choy, brussels, squashes also great. Also stores in fridge wells for heating up or cold 9n salad meal. Bon Apetit!

Swiss chard: try in minestrone soup, quiche (pre-saute) and instead of cabbage for stuffed cabbage. I also use it to make Greek-style spanakopita with feta. Beets: as another comment said, try golden beets which have a lighter, sweeter flavor. I like them in winter salads: with fennel and oranges, or with walnuts and goat cheese. Eat the thinnings in salad or stir-fry.

Swiss chard is my most abundant harvest. They’re pretty bug resistant and beautiful. I think I have 4 plants and I’ve already frozen so much! They should be blanched first if you are planning to freeze them. Stems should be stored separately from the leaves. Nothing will happen if you store them together but the stems take longer to cook so you add the leaves later. I like to cook them with garlic, olive oil, and bacon bits. I pickled some of the stems but regret leaving them as strips instead of chopping them up because they’re kind of stringy. Looking forward to your take on these!

I love using Swiss chard when it’s small in salads and in hot dishes as a spinach substitute. I also let it grow really large with my kale, making chard and kale chips. I love how beautiful chard can look in the garden; I’ve never had to cover it for bug protection. And my chickens and ducks adore the huge leaves as a snack.

Have you got enough pollinators around you? Is your soil PH corrected? Have you tried companion planting? Do you use enough organic fertilisers? Do you water enough? If you’re doing all of this already, try new varieties next year! 😊 good luck!

Yes I did soil testing and got everything amended accordingly in the spring. Everything else should be good to go as well. I had a amazing gardening year just been the last 4 weeks that started to slow down since we got a few heat waves. It always starts to slow this time of year but I tried a few newer approaches that didn't work in my favor this year. Cant complain about the harvest at all this year ( minus my green beans lol ) it was overall a really successful gardening season.

My plum regals didn't even make it long enough to yield a single fruit but my heirlooms are still going strong, so it's not just you! I planted Prize Choy this year - it claims to go from seed to a kilogram of greens in a month or something like that. It made monster plants and I'm about to spend my morning turning it all into kimchi. I need to plant beets today too. I love roasted beets and goat cheese in salad.

Swiss Chard is awesome. I always get a nice energy boost when I eat it.. mainly due to the vit K. Use it like Spinach, or in salads, like lettuce on a sandwich. Note it is courser than lettuce so use just a little. I think it would go well in soups also. It does well with frost but a major freeze will kill it. Give them some space they generate med size leaves. Its a come and go type.. harvest the outer leaves and come back later for more. Over all it's a decent plant. It develops a major tap root. Enjoy!

I love Swiss chard, I struggle to grow bok/pak choi as the slugs and snails love it so much but Swiss chard always does really well and I use it in my Asian dishes instead. To use in stir fries strip the green leaves off the stalks and chop the stalks into chunks and stir fry first with things like carrot etc roll up the leaves together and then thinly shred and toss that in towards the end; really delicious. Can be used in stews, curries, as a side & is really hardy. Freezes well too & you just pull the leaves off the plant as needed. Also if it starts to bolt the leaves don’t go bitter and you can still use them 😊

Hey Bre…planting Swiss Chard for the first time today as well. My Aunt & cousins would always hype it from their garden, so decided to give it a try. From what I read it’s similar to spinach. Swiss chard is super easy to grow! My favorite way to eat it is sauteed up in a tiny bit of olive oil, s&p and served with an over easy egg. It's my dad's absolute favorite veggie and he likes to steam it kind of like broccoli. If you let it go to seed it will come back again next year but it will bolt in spring it's second year and you'll either have to plant new seeds in spring or wait until the following season. I didn't know that until this year so don't make my mistake!!!! It's one of the best greens to have in your garden, you won't regret it. I'm kind of shocked it's new for you!!! Hope you love it girl!

Why do you only use part of your raised beds for planting? I noticed that you only applied compost to sections of your beds. You should consider using the square foot method of gardening to make better use of the space you have. I grow tons of veggies using the square foot gardening method. It may require that you divide the beds into 4 ft wide portions that you can reach into from either side, rather than stepping into the bed. Just a thought on how you might be able to claim more planting space.
