A friend of mine had two guitars with scalloped fretboards at one point. I was excited to try them and I really liked the way they felt. Funny you mentioned Strandberg, too. I bought one a couple of years ago and LOVE the neck. It solved this problem I’ve had with wrist pain for over 20 years.

I'm halfway there, since I have adjusted to tall frets and love them. I have an old Gibson acoustic that still has very low frets, and I hate playing it, and since it's a beat-up old Country Western that's not really valuable to collectors I've decided to re-fret it like I've done to all my other guitars. That means 2.9 mm stainless frets that are 1.5 mm high. This means you hardly ever even touch the wood of the fretboard when you play, almost like a scalloped neck.

I don't own a lot of guitars only 4. Each of them is different either in the bodies, necks or the pickups. So they all have something unique to offer for a different playing experience. I found for me it's good to experiment and find the things about them that work the best for different styles of music. They each respond in their own way to various picking techniques.

I have a scalloped neck with ss frets and I love it, all the little nuances and dynamics unique to a scallop are present and correct …… however……….😱……… if you gig regularly 3 or 4 gigs in a row or more and its sweaty summer vibes time, it turns into a cheese grater and my fingers become very sore. So I tend to only use it for the odd gig, as a normal neck with some wood under your finger tip is more comfortable. No sore fingers in a week of gigs! I wouldn’t mind a YJM Strat though, seems ideal for bluesy vibes too. Good vid!

I knew before I even got it that I would love it! So Much more control of the strings on a scalloped neck. YJM scallops are deeper now on his newer models. Where as the older models were a little bit more shallow.

I've had my YJM strat for about 2 months now, and my Pro II has been scalloped for about a year, and it certainly makes you much more aware of the wood on the boards of other guitars, for sure. I love the YJM Strat, but I honestly find myself taking the Pro II off the wall more often still because I need to replace the middle p'up on the YJM with an unwired single coil or something. I find that the raised posts on the YJM Furys (from the inability to lower the coil far enough) interferes with my picking a lot of times, and I don't have that issue on my Pro II.

I've long been very interested in scalloped necks. Warmoth offers two styles of scallop the Malmsteen style which is a deep uniform U shape. Then they have the Blackmore, which (to my understanding) has the wood at normal height on the low end (low e) and gradually scoops out as you move towards the high e. So you have less resistance during solos, but you can still dig in and chunk it up in the rhythm without fear of pushing to hard and pushing the whole thing sharp. I wonder if scalloping went away by accident or as a cost/time saving measure? If you look at old lutes, sitars, etc .. they're scalloped .

i can see how you'd have to focus more on the preasure you're placing down on the frets, as there's no stop of the fret board. kinda like high jumbo frets a bit. But, one thing i heard was possibly added sustain to the guitar and intial brighter attack twang. it sounds great.

I played a friend’s Yngwie Strat and had the preconception that I was going to hate it. I actually loved it. It’s funny though how you assume it will be a very “metal” orientated guitar, yet my friend plays mostly 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s pop-rock and indie covers. Suits his style perfectly.

One thing ive not heard examined is pick width. Early Yngwie likely used a medium pick. Why? 0.6-0.71 mm trains your picking hand to use less force, there is a brighter tone and your fretting hand can keep up better(you are forced to focus due to pick delay and likely will remember patterns better). The forced nature of a scalloped neck plus yngwies sledgehammer picking mandated his bizarre sense of timing. Why he changed to 1.6 mm was it after he was in a coma due to driving into a tree? I looked into thin picks after seeing van halen used them. My hands are very strong right handed so i use lighter picks right handed. I can get away with heavier picks playing my left handed strat but prefer medium as i find i dont have the memory for the long sequences 1.6 mm picks are often used for. Ive been playing right since '87 and left since '05. Only three weeks ago did i start holding a pick on side of index and thumbtip(correct) i was holding index tip and thumb(harder). The scalloped neck is just one variable that makes up Yngwies bizarre timing(look at wolf marshalls transcripts of yngwies stuff theres no standard note values). Was it the pick and the scalloped neck? Seems Yngwie doesnt know either, "when i practice i just play," hes always just focused on how it sounds.

Scalloped boards make downward vibrato and bends with just the first finger only much much easier, for me, I can sink more fingertip above the string for better grip. Probably helps Yng with those wide, fast vibratos that he is so great at...but destroy my finger on a non-scalloped board.

I've only owned one scalloped neck guitar. Unfortunately, it was a 1971 Les Paul Standard and the scallop job was rather amateurish. So I had the fretboard replaced. I have wanted a YJM Strat for a long time - my current 1990 Strat was purchased back in 1991 during a "YJM phase" and although I have modified a lot about that guitar, I've left the fretboard alone. Eventually I'm sure a YJM will end up in my collection.

I've thought about looking for something ruff...cleaning/set up and doing some upgrades. All it needs is at least one decent pickup and the ability to hold a tune. I thought about using the pickups out of my SG that I have been thinking about upgrading. The original plan was to slightly raise the action to purpose it as a slide guitar...but we all know how plans change. Robert, here's a question only a guitar man of your stature can answer, "Is it possible to effectively play slide on a scalloped-neck guitar without it sounding like a rusty hinge?

I scalloped the neck of one my strats and played it almost exclusively for about 5 years as my main gigging guitar: it cleaned up my fret-hand technique within a few months. I would advise younger players to get a Squier guitar and scallop it yourself; your guitar will act like autocorrect for your technique.

I had two of these strats, one maple and one rosewood. The scalloped fretboard it's amazing, the only little issue about this model is that the high string is so close to the fret end. It's something very common on this model and I guess it's related on how the brass nut is cut considering that the neck pocket and the neck alignment was ok. But as soon as you get accustomed it's great, also if you have some technique problems about pression on frets or pull down the high string out of the fret this model can be like "educational"

I owned one and sold it, those are guitars for advanced players. You forgot to mention the high E string has a tendency to slide off the fret board, if you want to sound like Mr. Malmsteen you really have to crank up the gain then it starts to squeal and all kinds of things it goes to shows you how good he really is to be able to control the back feed and play like he does. It plays like any other guitar it’s easier to bend and do vibrato. Oh yeah and they don’t hold their value for anything keep it or be prepared to take a loss.

Buddy Blues just did a review on the strandberg. The FRETS on most of the Models are an ANGLED fret not the actual Fan Fret style, the Fan fret is for instance the top, thicker string side is usually say a 25.5 fender scale, and the thinner strings lower side of fretboard is say a 24.7 Gibson length. Now strandberg does make an actual Fan Fret, and they also make that intonation correcting style, which look like spagetti skwiggly fret also.

My problem with the scalloped board is Not in what my fingers feel, but what my Ears perceive. I think of my flat (but radius'd) finger-board as a "Pitch Guard" which keeps the pitch True by not allowing the string to be pushed (downwardly) out of pitch (sharp), no matter how hard I hammer on to it. The trade-off is that by pushing too sharp, you are also getting rid of pingy (almost) fret buzz, by lifting the string above the rest of the very low action frets remaining in the vibrational path of the string. If ALL you played was scalloped fretboards, then you wouldn't need to have very precise fret leveling and crowning, because you're always pushing it sharp, and out of the fret-buzz zone.

I tried one because I always gripped the strings too tightly on my normal guitars and was pleasantly surprised. Before that I thought "I can't play with it anyway". Since then I've been playing with it every day and gripping the strings on the others is much easier. But: I find the sound much thinner. Good for practicing (the guitar is very light) but when I'm recording something, I grab the Framus Panthera or Diablo.

I recently bought a Sonic blue Yngwie strat with a scalloped maple neck. Personally, I don't notice much of a difference at all when playing. I apparently do not have this issue that others have had with pushing down too hard on the strings and sounding out of tune. Also don't find it particularly easier to grab onto a string. Perhaps this is because I prefer my action a bit higher precisely so I can grab hold of the string better. I donot like the bridge pick up either but that goes for almost all Fender strats, I have to add more low end with an EQ pedal to make them sound good. I prefer stock teles, they always sound great to me.

I’ve never played one, but on a “regular” guitar, I can pretty easily and accurately bend up a couple steps, but beyond that, I have to really put a lot of uuumph into it. But it seems to me that just by squeezing too hard, you’re already going sharp. So if you combine squeezing hard WITH a bending motion, it would be easier to bend up 3 or four steps. Is that an accurate assessment?

I played an Ibanez Jem with scalloped frets. It had that flat Ibanez speed type of neck. I really hated it. I was told that the Yngwie guitar wasn’t horrible like that. I don’t know one way or the other. I’d try it if I came across one of those but I’m not rushing out to find one either. Haha! I was told once that Yngwie’s guitar makes you develop a delicate touch.

What’s it like when playing chords? I’m more of a rhythm player so I’ve always felt it wouldn’t make sense to play a scalloped fret guitar.

These are cool, but I'm such a neck strangler I assume I would struggle. As a lefty, I don't think I've ever seen a scalloped neck I could actually play.

Try raising the bridge PU up higher on YM strat - it just sounds like it's being too low and hence lifeless

I had two of those yngwie strats and really liked tnem, the only problem i had with one of them was the high e string would slip of the guitar but that was easily fixed.

Same. I had to really ease up on the downward pull. But, putting .010 gauge strings helped that considering they come with .009's. YJM used .007's for a bit!

@cataclysmicconverter I am not to sure tbh, I sent it away to be repaired, it could of been something to do with the bridge , I think it is a common issue with strats, maybe google it or look on here.

That’s like saying you cannot play hard rock or metal on a thin line model. I haven’t played a guitar with a scalloped fingerboard myself (as of August 2023), but that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t.

Thanks for the info! I have never played a scalloped fretboard, because I am a beginner player. I always views scalloped fretboards for the experienced player. My question is how do you practice not squeezing the neck? I find myself squeezing the fretboard too hard to the point my hand becomes fatigued and my thumb hurts. What can I do, or focus on to not choke my guitar to death?
