I’ve been watching the UV index instead of the temperature and where I am it’s mostly in the 6-8 range. Every so often a day that’ll be 9 or 10. My tomatoes are still small since our season starts later than you. We were getting cold nights until a month ago. Do I need shade cloth yet? Or when I have more consistent days of above 8?

@@zionjudah never thought of checking UV index. I just looked up mine, I'm at 10 already and it killed off several baby plants I started late. How are you 6-8, where are you at?

Thanks! Another thing you can do is grow large sunflowers around the tomato plants to give a little bit of relief from the sun. I am doing that currently in my garden and you can use them as a natural trellis as well. To those of you out there struggling with growing food, don’t give up! Keep at it, we all have failures and it doesn’t mean you can’t grow things. 💚 Happy gardening!

50 years ago, my grandparents always had a beautiful, plentiful garden in North Alabama. They did nothing special other than a small amount of triple 13 when sewing seeds and a little Sevens dust occasionally. I watch all of these videos and enjoy the new things I learn but confused as to why so many "don't do this" and "always do that". I don't have money to purchase all of the gadgets and extras to try and mimic a perfect garden. I just use what I have on hand.

Same. I don't want to spend 1000's to get a few hundred in food. I use 30$ of manure and natural fertilizer and out every day looking for bugs.egg shells around plants etc. I use neem oil to help control vine beetles. Japanese beetles are my biggest pests. Rethink, reuse recycle. Hope you have a great harvest. I just made a raspberry jam enough for a year. Cost 1.50 for 6 jars.

Tomatoes loathe full sun. They're a part-shade species. They can take it in the spring when the days are shorter and sun is weaker, but in summer, even in northern latitudes, it's often too much. It's even worse at high altitudes where the air is thinner.

@@2MinuteGardenTips Are you sure it’s it the sun which is the problem or is it the temperature of the root zone as a result of the sun/daily temps? Try planting in full sun but with a deep mulch layer to keep the roots cooler. Still noticing the curl? Mexico has some fantastic heirloom varieties that have been growing in full sun for more generations than myself and my parents age combined. Do they all get leaf curl? Food for thought. Yes, tomato leaf curl has many reasons, in addition to his explanation, there are viral diseases, micronutrient issues especially boron deficiency and tomato grown in closed tunnel do best , also some tomato varieties naturally can not transport boron efficiently from root to meristem

Peppers will do the same. I grew an 8' round habanero in a five gallon bucket on year and it did not like direct sun. I would wilt in hours , I thought I killed it 3-4 times. Once I left it under a mulberry tree canopy it flourished into one of my best harvests ever.

@@2MinuteGardenTipsI planted a jalapeno between two tomato plants close together and thought it might be a problem. It's doing very well and I think the little bit of shade is probably helping it. It still gets a lot of sun but has some protection. My tomato plants look great except they are taking way too long to make fruit. I probably just fertilized too much.

I added shade cloth to tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers & eggplants. I cover top & sides from 12-7 pm then lift up for evening and morning so the pollinators can have fun with the cukes. The plants are in separate areas so I could leave on the shade over the nightshades all the time. They’re all so much happier. Shade cloth for the win! 🙌

I really appreciated this video. I have been growing tomatoes for years and I have a tomato that I noticed curling near my garage. It has white siding and faces the south side. I think it has extra solar radiation because of this reflective wall. This video makes PERFECT SENSE. I never thought of it like this that it was the increase in solar flux. I just assumed that the tomatoes were dry so I watered them and nothing happened. Stumbled across this video and now I learned something new.

Thanks for the explanation. I just watered my 3 tomato plants (3 different varieties) this evening and lo and behold one of the plant's leaves were curling on part of the plant. We are currently going through a bad heat wave of 100+ temps and yesterday it was about 113! The other 2 plants look fine. I'll keep an eye on this plant and see what happens. I guess I can move it to partial shade, but for the experiment's sake, I'll keep watering it and see if it makes it. I could also put up a shade cloth. I'll see how the next few days go.

Very good description of tomato leaf curl. However too much sun is only one problem. I experienced serious tlc after using Black Cow in my tomato bed. The most likely cause was that the manure came from grass fed cows in a pasture treated with weed killer. The next year I planted tomatoes in the same spot but removed most of the soil and replaced with compost and I again have beautiful tomatoes.

Thank you for the video. I grow quite a few tomatoes in raised beds and in a greenhouse. Many of my tomato plant leaves have been curling just like the ones in your video. In the explanation you gave with the sheet of paper you showed it curling downwards whereas my leaves (and the ones in your video) curl upwards and inwards. Is there a difference? Thank you.

Oh, now I am confused. We have had lots and lots of rain lately, with many cloudy days. My tomato leaves started curling. I did some research online, and most places said the leaves will curl with too much rain, but when the plants dry out, the leaves will uncurl! We have not had a lot of hot sun here, so I don't think they are curling because of that, so maybe there are more reasons for them to curl than you stated? I was happy to learn that they would uncurl when dried out, but now I'm wondering. Very confusing.

They curl from more than one condition. You are right though. Overwatered conditions deprive roots of oxygen. I heard the leaves will curl to help respiration 🤷

You are correct, but I think the leaves curl down if overwatered. They curl down in my other plants when overwatered.

I also think over-watering can contribute to leaf curl when they curl down instead of up.

Last year I planted in compost that was too hot. They curled and generally did not do well. Did the heat from the compost cause that curl? They're in the same bags this year and are looking great.

dude this was the best damn briefing of the Tomato. ive got four growing side by side right now. 2 are determinant and the other 2 are undeterminant. one of the determinant ones has one tomato on it and some severe leaf curl. the other three are fine. what a trip I learned like alot from this video. appreciate the knowledge bomb. I needed that. oh brand new subscriber here btw

Thanks for subscribing. If you get yourself a small shade cloth and erect it overhead so it completely covers them, it'll make the plants a lot healthier. I put my shade cloth up roughly Memorial Day to Labor Day. It makes a world of difference. I placed a link in the video description to the cloth I use. Small clothes are pretty inexpensive. I use 40%. Most won't want to go higher than 40%, because too much shade will make them leggy.

People sometimes mistake herbicide drift damage with leaf curl as well. If the leaves and stems start growing in curly shapes, this is most likely herbicide damage. It usually does not kill the tomato plant but stunts it and may delay it from setting fruit. There are some commonly used lawn weed killers that are quite prone to drift and tomatoes are very sensitive to these chemicals.
@donhorak9417
@donhorak9417 22 күн бұрын
People shouldn't be using those chemicals on windy days.
@joeellerbach2095
@joeellerbach2095 22 күн бұрын
@@donhorak9417 I agree. However, wind is not the only culprit that causes these herbicides to drift. There are conditions that cause the vapor to hang in the air and drift up to a mile even without much wind.

I can attest to what herbicides can do to tomatoes, peppers, cukes, squash, and cantaloupes. A field near my garden was sprayed with herbicides on a windy day this spring. It raven settled into the soil as my re-plats suffered the same fate. The third plantings are doing well however.

I would recommend investing in a piece of shade cloth. A 20ft piece is only around $25 and it'll last you a decade if you care for it. I think I'm up to 6 of them. They're worth it. I placed a link in the video description.

I have one little Roma tomato plant that has looked kind of sad sack since the day I transplanted it and even though it is bearing more fruit and the fruit is ripening faster than the other tomatoes (no other Romas) I'm wondering if shade cloth would be a good idea for it. What do you think? Can't hurt.
