This week on the Tuesday Tune we're going back to basics - sort of - and looking at some of the less obvious and less commonly discussed aspects of sag setup.
We aren't here to tell you what is the "right" amount of sag - no single number is correct, and what works best varies hugely according to the frame/fork/shock/rider/ability/terrain variables. For this reason, discussing specifics needs to be done in context - 15% sag on your Pike is fine, but that's extremely stiff on the back end of your V10, for example. This video is aimed at those who already have a basic grasp of sag, so we aren't going to show you how to measure it, but if you want to learn more about that, DVO have a short and sweet guide here - bit.ly/2hBq1qG
What we are looking at though is what the relevance of sag is, why it's useful as a transferable and comparative value even between different riders on different bikes, how to make sure your measurements are consistent, and what the practical limitations of sag are, both in terms of measurement and relevance to performance. Although it's far from being the be-all and end-all of proper spring rate setup, sag is very useful as a starting point and a baseline indicator of spring rate relative to body weight.

I appreciated (~9:30) your explanation of why rear shocks use %sag whereas forks use pressure (i.e. the travel ratios).

Alot would disagree that sag isn't important on an mtb but riding sag is even more important, whare you sag sits when riding the trails etc a pro was just explaining all this in last video

Hi thanks for the video,sorry got questions,how to set up the fork sag?I have fox 36 and I swap from air to vorsprung spring,usually I set up my sag just pump the fork,and set the psi, Thank you Andi

how's about the Compressions settings on fork and shock for Sag measurement, should they be fully opened or leaved as they are?
@VorsprungSuspension
@VorsprungSuspension 7 жыл бұрын
As long as you don't have the suspension locked out (including any kind of platform/climb switch) on your compression damper, it won't matter for sag.

Hey, what would you recommend for a light rider with a xc fork that wallows and sits too deep in the travel (negative coil spring) Decrease preload on the coil spring (there are ways to do it) Increase the air chamber volume (more pressure for the same sag so more pressure on the coil spring)
@VorsprungSuspension
@VorsprungSuspension 7 жыл бұрын
Changing the air chamber volume has a pretty small effect on sag (compared to what it does to the second half of the travel anyway). Is there a reason you can't just increase the pressure and run a firmer spring rate?

If I increase the air pressure its almost impossible to get more than 70mm travel out of the 100mm fork. I tried decreasing preload on the coil spring and that improves things a lot because im able to run lower pressures without the coil sucking down the fork but the problem is that changes the travel from 100 to 80mm. Maybe I'll just try grinding down the coil spring to decrease its rate. Btw, I like what DVO did with their Diamond fork, they kept the coil negative spring insead of going the dual air route, but the nice thing is they added preload adjuster on it, its essentially what old coil forks had but on the negative side.

@@MrGigiKent4 grinding down a spring increases its rate ..the less spring coils the firmer the rate .. weird huh? !

Do you feel the fox forks sticker “psi start point” are useful?

Yes. Today's manufacturer's recommendations are pretty good as starting point.

I’m on a Turbo Levo with a Fox 36 Rhythm and set the sag to start 25% 32mm at 80psi with one vol spacer. Yet even after adjusting to a 50mm stem dropping the bar a couple of spacers and sliding my seat forward a pinch to get a little more forward, I’m never using more than 80% of my travel. Any less psi the never chamber wants to take up some of the travel. I’m 210 lbs with gear so honestly this doesn’t seem to make much sense. Any thoughts? I’m in BC so am definitely sending stuff.

I found 27.5 sag was the best compromise on my levo, i am to use very near full travel occasionally and it is plush and fairly supportive. If you dont do large jumps and drops more sag can work and is ultra plush

The pulling in is because your negative chamber has more pressure than your positive chamber. You need to cycle your fork a few times through the majority of it's travel to balance this out. One big ride should sort your chamber pressures. Then you can adjust again.

Might one be able to effectively reduce the travel of a fork by simply increasing the sag? and also possibly adding bottomless tokens to increase the ramp up?
@TruePerksNaturalFarming

You may be reducing the travel by doing so, but you are going to adversely affect how the shock reacts as it goes through its stroke.
