Hi Jeff, I know this is an older video, but thank you. I have been wood working for over 50 years. I do not have a lathe, YET. I keep looking for a good quality used one to get started. So for now I watch lots of video.

Another great tutorial Jeff, I particularly like that you changed to left hand turning to undercut the cap, a technique I think more people should practice, as if you can learn to turn left handed, it makes many jobs, like this one, easier. Please don't ask how I know ;) Looking forward to your next video Take care Mike

Thanks Mike! I can switch hands pretty easy though I think there is still hesitation in my vids as I'm trying to slow things down so the viewer can see what I'm doing. Working on the next vid already!!

Trevor Curry thanks for watching. Catches happen, usually when I’m not paying attention or trying to rush. They happen to EVERY turner, all levels. Just part of the deal. Focus on proper tool presentation and maintaining a supported cut and you’ll minimize the chance. Keep an eye on my channel, have a new camera setup and will start cranking out vids again in January! Anything specific you’d like to see covered? Let me know.

Great job. I think a little additional explanation on sizing the tenon would be helpful for beginners. You measured the jaws, but explaining why they were in the slightly open position would be helpful.

Wow great video, I make lots of mushrooms, I love doing that. why not putting some danish oil on the mushrooms before you part it off? it's a small effort and it looks great especially with those beautiful colors in this wood. Anyway nice video, i've learned some new tricks from you.

When turning cedar and want the craft to be automatic. Like in the case of cedar chests against moth damage. How do you finish the wood? Sand seal, wax, stain, varnish?
@TheWalnutLog
@TheWalnutLog 7 ай бұрын
Hey Greg. In the case of a cedar chest you’d sand to a higher grit and NOT finish the inside at all. Anything you put on the wood will seal it and kill the benefit of the aromatics. Outside the finish is totally up to you. It the chest seems to lose smell, especially if it’s opened often, then all you need to do is lightly re-sand the inside to start that process over again.

I've subscribed after finding your channel. Love your video's, informative and easy to follow what you are doing. I do have a question, as I have a Nova 1624-44 Lathe and Nova chucks. I struggled with getting everything right on my 'tenons' before turning. While doing research, the more I looked at my chuck jaws and the information on line, I realized that Nova Chucks/Jaws do not suggest or require a 'dove tail tenon' when clamping down on the piece. The walls on the inside of the jaws is at 90 degrees. When clamping something from the inside (jaws pressing outward against wall of the mortise on the end of your piece, then having the proper dovetail cut is appropriate. So, my question (sorry, tend to be a bit long on my questions/responses) is - do you find that there is a reason you are putting a dovetail on your tenon's? Thanks, and look forward to following your video's and instructions.
@TheWalnutLog
@TheWalnutLog 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for following and commenting! And good question. All Nova jaws are dovetailed internally and externally except the spigot sets. It's had to tell on the standard 2" jaws that would come with something like the G3, you can see it better with the other jaw sets. Just checked. Lol. The internal dovetail isn't as pronounced as the external but your hold point will benefit from having that dovetail. Unless you do use the spigot sets...the you lose holding ability by creating an angle. Also, the standard 2" set has a little lip. If you create a dovetail tenon, the jaws will pull your workpiece into them and create a much more secure hold than relying on just crushing the fibers in the tenon.

Oh man, this was shot 5 years ago. Lol. I think I was primarily using Deft Spray Lacquer at that point. Went to minwax spray lacquer after that and am now using either Hampshire Sheen spray lacquer or Rustolem 2X Gloss Clear.
