Dragonfly and damselfly Nymphs are tasty snacks for may fish species. They are larger than many other aquatic bugs and therefor fish are more willing to move out of their hole for one. Many say an olive wooly bugger is a fly that can mimic a dragonfly nymph and I don't disagree. But where you want something more true to the look of a dragonfly nymph, I find there aren't a whole lot of popular patterns out there. Not saying they cannot be found, and you will always find a few at a fly shop. But when you search for them online, you find some samples of what people have tied, but not really any staple patterns. This I believe is because the vast majority are tying something that is too difficult to create at quantity. You can maybe bust through 5 an hour on a bench and that just isn't fast enough to effectively fill a box for most people. I designed this fly with that in mind. I wanted something simple, and easy. The body will be automatically built in both taper and the right width using just a single marabou feather. It also forms the tail. Same thing with the head and thorax of the fly, simple techniques and quick, easy ways of tying in the materials that are quite simple. So I hope you guys like this, and I hope it becomes a staple in your box especially during the times of year your local river or lake are holding dragonfly nymphs.
Make sure and check out www.risenfly.com for some awesome gear at great prices. Also type in McFly at checkout for an additional 15% off.
I want to apologize. After uploading this video I went back and watched. I realized I was calling the thorax, the abdomen throughout the video. So please excuse that slip up.
As always I include the materials I used on the fly, and links to where you can purchase them.

This dragon nymph pattern is very cool, it is suitable for trout in fresh water as in saltwater with sea basses. Congratulations on the wonderful bait, a big hug.

Love this fly! Great tip on spinning the marabou. I will definitely use this.🎣 Bigger and different color and longer eyes might be a great saltwater shrimp pattern🤔. Liked the mono eyes vid. Thanks for sharing! Well done videography as well!👍👍 God Bless

That is a neat pattern. I've never seen corded maribou like that before. I usually use chenille, but will give this a go.

I really like this as an alternative to a woolybugger. I’m sure with no weight it has a more subtle presentation to the water and a slower sink rate.
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler Жыл бұрын
Yeah, so it’s definitely different than a wholly bugger and I would say fishes differently also. I’m glad you like it though, it does really work for sure!

looks more a damselfy nymph to me, but I suppose the main thing is that the trout eat it! Thanks for sharing a simple and effective fly.
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 4 жыл бұрын
Yes you are correct it is a damselfly nymph. Problem is people will confuse the two and in order to get people to click, more people know about dragonflies or use that term (even for damsels). Sorry, a little bit of deviation to be able to get more views. But yes, if you read the description I said damselfly a few times. Dragonfly nymphs are actually not as long and thin. I was actually designing this to be more a damsel than a dragonfly

Hey, you may look into tying an articulated dragon fly nymph. The naturals are very wiggly and active. I use them with great success in locations with noticeable dragon flies buzzing around. I’d love to see that.

Thanks for the recommendation, yeah I mean I could look into articulating this one….

@@McFlyAngler I make them using two nymph hooks abdomen and claspers on the back hook connected with lite braid line, thorax and head on the front and cut the back hook off. I can send you a pic if you like.

Cool, sure! I mean I think I can probably do one also from this pattern, but would love to see your take on a dragonfly also. Thanks! You have Instagram? Can you private message me there?

Hey McFly, absoloutely loved the video! although I have a sorta off beat question from one of your older videos. In the Reddington Classic Trout review you made I saw you also bought a 6 piece version of the rod, I was just wondering if this affected the action of the rod by having 2 additional rod sections and if there has been any segment slippage through using it, if you have done so. Im not really looking for too big of a reply just wondering if its worth buying for the compact size since the review was focused on the 4 piece.
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 4 жыл бұрын
I like the rod a lot. It might be slightly more stiff with the extra sections but not overly noticeable. If you are gonna need to stuff it into a backpack or have limited storage then I say go for it. If not, then go with the 4 piece. Hope that helps.

Nice pattern, what would you think of using bead chain eyes and soft hackle instead of the kraken dubbing?
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah try it. Now there is some weight to bead chain, so make sure it swims correctly and doesn’t flip over the fly. But give it a try.
