Occupational therapists (OTs) are also important to mention-they provide valuable support to many folks whose mental health struggles cause difficulties in performing daily activities (e.g., attending to personal hygiene). OTs are practical-minded clinicians who are interested in how your mental health impacts daily function, and use assessment and treatment to help you get back to doing what you want and need to do.

While they are important in overall ADL functioning . Ot’s are not trained to provide psychotherapy, they can not prescribe meds nor are they considered mental health clinicians. They are however, vital for others aspects of patient care

From this Therapist’s POV, the MOST important thing is the therapeutic relationship. Plus, we all have different levels of additional training. I am trained in EMDR (on my way to certification) and after the EMDR certification, I may get the CEDS (Eating Disorder Specialist). We all have a variety of modalities, ie CBT, DBT, ACT, Psychodynamic, Solution Focused, etc, so it will depend on what the client is looking for in a Therapist.

I'd love to see this topic be done again soon. Perhaps with more of an emphasis on the perspectives that each school of thought prescribes to. In my experience that's what the biggest differentiator is. For example, social workers focus on the system and environment that the client lives in.

One difference between psychologists and social workers you didn't mention was that a psychologist will generally work with individuals. Social workers will work with relationships either in couples or families. Any psychological change made within an individual will impact their closest relationships, and without collaboration, often will meet with resistance. Working relationally allows the individual to be seen and understood in their immediate context, not just in the therapy room. I think " behavioural health" ( which is still called "mental health" in Australia) should make a strong stand for couple and family therapies as a better way to conduct therapy most of the time.

I live in the United States and I am a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker. I work with individuals, families and group work. Here, in the US, psychologist and clinical Social Workers are both called clinicians and we use the same modalities. In fact, where I'm currently employed we are all called, respectfully, Behavioral Health Constants. It's great that we, Clinical Social Workers are not belittled or seen less than or not capable as a psychologist.

3:25 This is interesting cause in Canada, you must have a bachelors in psychology to apply for a clinical psych program (of course there are exceptions, but even in exceptions the expectations are you have most of the pre-req in psychology). You then gotta do masters and a PhD, a total of 6 years after your bachelors. In the video he says a clinical psych only needs a 4 year degree after their bachelors? Im assuming this is for PsyD programs. In Canada, while there are PsyD programs out there, its incredibly less common to see a PsyD clinician vs a PhD clinician. Is this the same in the states?
@caitlinwallace213
@caitlinwallace213 2 жыл бұрын
Will, You are correct and even in PsyD programs, it is important that they are APA accredited to be able to get a state license in the US. PsyD programs are a bit of an experiment in the US right now but a PhD typically takes 6+ years after a 4year BS/BA in Psychology. Getting your bachelors in psychology is easiest because we do have pre-reqs to a MS psychology program as well. For what I have learned from my own interviews with licensed professionals, a psychiatrist has more training as a primary care than an actual mental health care professional. Their training is specialized in the physiological outcomes of prescriptions, not behavioral care. I actually find Dr. Dom's explanation a little insulting and a bit dismissive, though I'm sure he just isn't aware of these requirements for a licensed psychologist. There is a growing effort by the APA to approve new post PhD MS programs to allow for prescriptive power so these fields are able to work more closely with each other since they really are functionally different. 🙂

i think the psychiatrist was a little off on this part of the video. to enter a psychology phd program you usually need at least 12 credits of psychology courses from undergrad and previous psychology research experience is basically required. the phd programs tend to take 5-6 years on average to finish after your bachelors, some people take up to 7 or 8years. PsyD programs tend to be 4/5 years instead. phd’s are more common and usually recommended since you usually do not have to pay for ur degree as a phd candidate

You mention this is a series and talk about the “next video”, but the appropriate video won’t play “next” based on KZfaq auto play. So that only applies if the video is in a playlist. I imagine it IS in a playlist, but I found this video on its own and hoped to locate that playlist as I absolutely want to watch the whole series. Unfortunately there’s no link in the description so I would have to begin searching for the playlist through the tremendous amount of great content on your channel. That’s frustrating since I’m already on the first video. Could you put a link to the playlist in the description?
