Ramon Dekkers was a legend in his own time. Dekkers dominated opponent’s with his non stop pressure and powerful combinations, earning multiple championship titles in kickboxing and muay thai. Dekkers achievements in Muay Thai were unheard for a westerner at the time, and greatly helped to popularize the style throughout the world.
With his powerful head and body hooks, tilting head movement and relentless aggression, Dekkers was like the Mike Tyson of kickboxing.
Only Tyson’s opponent’s never had to worry about him following up his punches with roundhouse kicks.
Like any good pressure fighter, Dekkers excelled at closing the distance.

As always, your appreciation of combat fundamentals is miraculously instructive and enlightening. It's my opinion that MMA isn't yet a "sweet science", with the rare exception of a handful of high-IQ fighters and coaches, because of the dearth of this type of analysis and incorporation. Being that it's actually in its infancy, there are naturally no people like Cus D'Amato, with a half century of experience, in modern full-contact MMA. Two or three decades maybe, but not five.

@calska140
@calska140 3 жыл бұрын
Nieky Holzken's style is more like a Dutch Buakaw than Dekkers though. He's just in your face the whole fight slipping attacks or rolling with them and firing a counter. Dekkers is in your face too but it's not a constant and consistent pressure like Nieky. Dekkers picks you apart until he finds a rhythm and then makes it rain on you. Nieky is way more measured. Did a beautiful job on Kosmo Alexander picking his shots to get the KO. That's my favorite win of his. Dekkers wouldve poured on more aggression and worked different angles a little more.

@@user-pd9ju5dk5s Why would you try and disrespect a Muay Thai legend like this? Firstly, I'm pretty sure your only source you use is Wikipedia and his fight record on Wikipedia is incomplete. Secondly he fought Thai fighters in Thailand, you can guess what happens when the fight goes full distance. The Thai fighter get's the victory if the foreign opponent doesn't dominate, it's generally known that Dekkers has been robbed multiple times. Thirdly Ramon Dekkers was the first foreign fighter that claimed the title Muay Thai Fighter of the Year in Thailand, he even got a Royal award from the Thai Royal Family for his services to the sport.

The fact he fought internationally (mainly Thailand) brought him many challenges. One being, the judges. They were prejudiced against this fighter from Holland. The Thai's wanted Thais to win. I would have never thought to look at Ramon Dekkers' defense if it weren't for videos like this. It's not the first thing that comes to mind when you look at a highlight reel, but to me it's now actually one of the most interesting things about him. He does a lot of things I've been thinking about, wondering how they would work (especially for boxing) and it's great to see them broken down and in action. That's why I keep coming back to this channel and rewatching videos, and what makes these videos more exciting and interesting to me than any KO highlight compilations. I wish I could buy your books where I am and hope your channel will continue to grow.

Nice video man! It would be cool if you could also do a breakdown of Coban, and then follow up with all Ramon Dekkers VS Coban fights. Seeing those two fight each other is a blast and I would love for a breakdown of their fights!

I'd be fascinated to see your take on the Dekkers-Pennacchio match at some point. The rules were a bit odd, but it was fascinating to watch.

Nice breakdown. Also one must admit it also has a little to do with picking the opponent. This is a key part of managing a fighter and also how one builds a winning record.

One of the stories I remember of Dekkers was that in some fight in Thailand, he was send to from Netherlands to an airport 100kms far from the event and he had to drive on bad roads with taxi for a whole day just to fuck with his preparation. He never won close fights because judges didn't like him but he's a legend among all other Thai people
@kabukicho3009

He never won close fight cause he wasnt able to adapt to the Thai scoring system.He typically outclassed in most of his fights in Thailand
@ramon0408
@ramon0408 3 жыл бұрын
@@kabukicho3009 not true, they did not let him win the close fights due tto the fact that thai people did not like a forgeiner win on their cultural sports. Keep in mind he was the first non thai world champion in the sports.

Ryan Anderson most fights in Thailand? You know he has 186 wins, right?
@andrewjackson2677
@andrewjackson2677 3 жыл бұрын
Ryan Anderson the scoring system was idiotic. He was a prolific puncher and they gave little credit for it, which has since changed incrementally, which shows even they have accepted the logical inadequacies of a system that allows punching and ko’s by punches, but awards little credit for it in the fight.

Another story was that when he beat some thai dude, they told him he had to fight another even bigger dude on the next day, else he would not get paid. Instead of arguing his response was that he would do it. His heart and spirit was insane

Dekker was tough as nails. In his later years they had to fuse his right shin to his foot due to years of accumulated damage to avoid amputation and he was told to stop fighting. His response was to switch more to southpaw and kick more with his left leg..... and he still kicked with his right leg. He also tore a bicep before his fight against Duane Ludwig and fought anyway and won.
