Ou Shinkansen is expensive, but something has to be done between Fukushima and Yonezawa. It might be feasible to turn that one section into full Shinkansen that can be either 260kph seibi Shinkansen or 300kph E8 Shinkansen. Yonezawa and Fukushima are quite busy stations but there are almost no users in between so I don't think it is a problem closing the section down. That will slove the problem of the Yamagata Shinkansen going like 30km/h on the Itaya mountains.

It's nice to see some progress towards eliminating a very slow section of the Yamagata Shinkansen which could allow full operation in the future. As for the Ou and Uetsu Shinkansen, I agree I don't think the populations support it. Ive been on the Inaho and local services between Akita and Sakata many times and Shinjo and Omagari a couple and they're not busy. I've heard an idea floated to re-guage the Rikuu-West Line to connect the mini Shinkansen between Shinjo and Sakata/Tsuruoka but that line is also very quiet, but it would be a lot cheaper. I also wouldn't mind extending the Akita Shinkansen between Omagari and Yokote, but the line is already pretty straight so local services run pretty fast on that section so it would only be for convenience (but I do enjoy visiting Yokote :) ). If some improvements could be made to speed the Inaho up to 140-160kph operation it would still be a big benefit along the line as well.

Would be nice to see a fully realised Shinkansen master plan but this video really highlights how there are serious diminishing returns in some regions once the biggest cities are already covered. If the question of profit is the highest priority then these smaller cities will likely never get a Shinkansen. I'm a bit curious about the plan to upgrade the Yamagata Shinkansen to a full standard line. Was there any consideration in this plan or the Ou Shinkansen for a route from Shinjo to Sakata/Tsuruoka? My thoughts are that this would add new connections to cities that do not have existing trains directly to Tokyo. Maybe it makes more sense to try to connect these cities via Niigata though.

Once again an excellent video! I love your use of analysis on feasibility on these videos. I have had trouble trying to write how the Yamagata and eventually Akita Shinkansen was a compromise for the Ou Shinkansen. Also, why does the Yamagata Shinkansen not go all the way to Akita if the Ou conventional line can go there from Fukushima?

Becacuse Akita Prefecture didn't want to pay. The Yamagata Shinkansen was owned by a semi-public sector which Yamagata prefecture, local municipal governments in Yamagata and JR East established.

The Maglev Chuo Shinkansen is scheduled to open from Shinagawa to Nagoya in 2027. The section from Nagoya to Shin-Osaka is scheduled to open in 2037. However, because the construction is behind schedule, it is certain that the opening will be behind schedule.

2:26 right now, Yamagata to Shinjo is only 15 minutes, but with Shinkansen, it doubles to 30 minutes??? Wrong math?

Another great video! I think, Ou Shinkansen could be built, but the route should be changed from Yamagata to Akita. It means, that tracks should be built not via Yonezawa station, but through Sakata station to Akita, which will increase the capacity. Also, is it possible to create route from Sendai rather than Fukushima in order to maximize the number of passengers?

Yamagata Prefecture and JR East are trying to upgrade to a full-size Shinkansen using existing routes. And I don't think it will be approved by the government because it will be a route that is not even in the master plan if it will build from Sendai. Also, since Sendai is the largest city in Tohoku, it will be difficult to acquire land to build a Shinkansen on the ground.
