I think the Japanese one was meant to give away a sense of chilling and playing serenely with your friends, which was the game's most significant selling point. The American one, instead, focuses on the game's competitive aspect, which was the other big selling point of the title. None of them is objectively wrong. I should also add there's no such thing as objective truth, as, from the day some bunch of matter gained consciousness, we as a species are condemned to temporarily witness the intrinsic chaos of existence, like a wild play staged by a mad, blind god.

I love this box art. I interned at a videogame publisher in the UK when I was a teenager. They told me that western box art always highlighted an individualist, competitive mindset and Japanese boxart highlighted a collectivist, community-minded mindset. Similarly, studying the history of Japanese art shows that scenes are often depicted from a sort of 2.5D, “floating world” perspective, while western painters were the first to master 3D, 2-point perspective drawing. The difference between these boxarts is a perfect illustration between these competing philosophies. I love the Japanese Mario 64 DS boxart… it’s beautifully arranged, like a zen rock garden. That’s what Miyamoto once said his games were, after alll… little gardens you can keep in a drawer.

I think the reason Luigi's ahead is because Mario stopped to grab a Wing Cap and is ready to take off. Luigi only notices Mario isn't running with him a little bit later, which is why he appears to be looking backwards.

When I picked up a Korean copy of the game, it was pretty annoying that it had this box art... it's so bland. The iQue version has the US art, tho.

The western box art is much nicer. But on the other hand the Eruopean box art for Twilight Princess HD is way worse.

No. Actually its still good. Even tho it would be better to put that in the back. I don't see any ugly thing. Otherwise, the other box art from other region is better in representation of the product. More close up = good. But it is still original and great. I personally love it.
