as someone who had to go through the az "education" system. it honestly sucked, and my bully wasn't a student it was a teacher. the principle didn't want to help so my grandmother said "fine you don't want to change her teacher then I will" walked out to the reception and said "give me a withdrawal slip" and took me out of school in the 3rd grade. I will say however during my teens I did go to a small charter school and they were absolutely amazing so my advise is find a small charter school and don't bother with the public education system.

Our family is actually visiting Mesa from Illinois this week and have been able to get a glimpse of these issues you’ve covered though your videos are much more informative and appreciated than what we can learn in one week. You’re right, the heat is perhaps the most important factor as it can be overwhelming at times-- so much so that we’ve determined if we were to live here year round we would need access daily to a pool lol, especially being near seniors and coming from the Midwest, though if we were to be snowbirds, then a pool wouldn’t be a necessity. Regardless, if we did move here, we’d hope to have someone as open minded and seemingly kind as you as our neighbor😀

I was born in MT and honestly your blood is literally thick after living in cold-and WILL thin out. Hydrate more than you think you need (like 30 cups!) and acclimate. They say just 10 min per day of being in the temp raises your body's core temp. Staying exclusively in AC makes it worse. After running a mile a day in whatever temp I can now keep my AC at 89F (I'm cheap and hard-core, but you get my point).

Great video! I think the smell thing may be related to the hot, dry climate. Usually sewer smells escape when the sewer trap runs dry, and it can pretty quickly, but it could also just be dried up drains. 2020 was a really dry year in my city and the smell was pretty bad. Honestly I’d say just pour some water down the drains/pipes that smell but I get why a city doesn’t have time to do all that lol

Thank you for making this video. Alot of people wont make videos about arizona because people from arizona will flood the comment section with hate mail. I am in arizona, grew up here and you are 100% correct in your analysis. Arizona also has "at will" employer laws, which has caused me and several others to be fired immediately without warning, but many employers prefer to harass, bully and micromamage until you quit. Many people are leaving arizona by the dozens, mostly due to the sudden rise in rent post pandemic. Who wants to pay extra rent to live in a giant retirement center with the worlds worst drivers, low wages and unfair employment laws? The streets are completely empty every morning now. It used to be busy traffic around 7 or 8am. Now, after the pandemic, its extremely silent. During the pandemic a ton of people moved out of , you can see blocks of empty houses for rent or for sale. There are more homeless on the street than ive ever seen before. Its very disturbing.

The second Amendment is a right not a privilege. Freedom is not free and sometimes the wrong people get those rights and use those rights to to do really horrible things, But luckily law abiding citizens who can protect against an unfortunate bad situation such as a mass shooting can minimize those situations by neutralizing the mass shooter. At the end of the day I would rather have an armed law abiding society vs a disarmed society any day! Bad guys will always get things illegally and through theft/black markets.... disarming law abiding citizens who want to protect their life’s as well as their loved ones life, and even possibly random strangers life’s would be a bad idea! An Armed Society is A Polite Society! If you disagree that is fine. I am not saying you are wrong or right, but I am saying these rights are rights for a reason! And the beautiful thing about our constitutional rights is that we all have them equally! If you chose not to utilize those rights, well that is called freedom my friend! So with that freedom we all have please try to understand both sides of the field and do not vote to take away law abiding citizens Rights and Freedoms just as we would not dare to do to the other side! Much love and respect from a gun loving, freedom loving, constitutional loving/believing proud American!

You also mentioned education. The education system here is terrible. When i graduated high school my writing suffered for years, and i was completely unprepared for college. An ASU prodessor from the econ dept. stepped forward at some point and admitted to students on film that the administration made it a requirement for him to fail 30% of students . Not sure if the video is still leaked, but its a little known fact among asu students. 30% is a large percentage, and its very shady if you try to transfer credits to asu. They have their "standards" for denying credits which are not openly known. Professord try to secure income by forcing students to take more courses, i had to retake biology twice because i took an advanced biology course which was considered "too detailed" for my major in anthropology. So i had to retake "general bio" to recieve credit. Asu, or any school in arizona is a bad idea. I definitely do not recommend. Shady business practices

Moving back to AZ in July. I lived in AZ in 2014 & never experienced an racism at all & I went everywhere. Either I was extremely lucky or ppl just didn’t know how to classify me, either was fine. Now I have a daughter who is biracial so I’m more scared for her than anything. I think that there is more BLATANT RACISM than just whispers now. I definitely get looks when my Byfrnd & I are out, he’s biracial but looks white. Hopefully it’s not too bad when I get there with my blended family. Funny, I definitely laughed when you brought up the guy buying a firearm from the store. Thats only because I do own a firearm & I was basically the same way. I entered the shooting place & walked out in less than 35mins with a firearm. I did however sign up for a class on how to use it & clean it properly. I only bought it because I have a little one to protect (I worry about home invasions ALOT) especially moving to a new place/state. Great video! Can’t wait for part #2!! I don't think that loose gun laws here are an issue. Im thankful that this state recognizes, and respects our 2nd amendment here, and how much easier it is to acquire a firearm for my protection. Yes there will be tragedies, but it's better than living in tyranny, especially what we're witnessing in the blue states, currently. I say this as a former Californian, who relocated here in 2012.

It's been interesting to me looking at your viewpoint as what I would consider an "Easterner". I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, and moved to Northern AZ a few years ago (so pretty much anything East of the Rockys is "Far, far East.. pretty much East Coast"). When we were looking to places to move to, we very quickly dismissed the Valley and Phoenix area as locations, precisely because of some of the points you make. It's smaller up here, cooler, people are more nice... and for "big city" sort of amenities the nearest place is Las Vegas... but it's only about an hour away, and as anyone from the Bay Area will tell you that's "a commute". What really gets me about AZ is how *small* it is, relatively speaking - in California, my nearest relatives were almost 900 miles apart and we thought nothing of driving to visit them over the holidays. So, I guess, it's all a matter of perspective...

5th Generation To the Phx area. 1. The summer is our winter. Rare to see natives hiking in the middle of summer 😂 unless it’s 5am. Locals go to river, lakes, pools, or as kids we played with the hose. My 1st car had no heat and no air for 3 years. 2. Air pollution- the Phoenix area aka “the VALLEY of the sun” is located in a giant bowl. Literally. So pollution, dust, pollens rise and then just circulate within the bowl vortex. You can get a great view of the bowl phenomenon as you drive over the mountains that surround Phx or fly in to the airport. Phx area is unbelievably dusty. Go for a hike and blow your nose afterwards. 😬 I’ve come to the conclusion that it gets trapped and the only way to get it out is when we get rain. You’ll see the pollution/air quality advisory go up especially if we haven’t had rain. Last year summer was the first time in 42 years that I saw NO monsoon. It actually made me nervous because the rain in July and august clean the air and provides water so we don’t get crazy fire restrictions. I love the monsoons. They are incredible. 2. Smell- (I can guess 3 areas that you live) 🤣😂 people have been flooding here since the invention of air conditioning. Phx has always been a city that’s really a bunch of suburbs. Our downtown would be a major disappointment to most big city dwellers and public transportation SUCKS. We now have the light rail that goes through part of the city but most people have to drive to it and park to take it. So for 90% of residents it’s more of a novelty. If I went to ASU I’d probably use it. Now to the smell. Because of the rapid growth, roads/freeways are under constant major construction. The roads surrounding my house have been under major construction for 5 years and it’s road rage inciting. They aren’t just fixing pot holes in these roads. In the 1980s we had one freeway that went east to west with exits on to major city streets that were 2 lanes that went for a few Miles that transitioned into one lane streets in a majority of the suburbs. Our newlywed home in the early 2000s was 9 miles off the freeway on a one lane road with only stop signs and no street lights up. The dirt in AZ is like no other. It’s expansive soil. So you can’t just plop a road down or expand a road. It’s a time consuming process. Have you ever gotten one of those little tablets that grow into an animal or expand into a towel when you add water? That’s very similar to expansive soil in Arizona. So when they add a lane to a road they have to bring in dirt, it has to be wet down and dried, then they wait for it to settle, and the process is repeated. If this isn’t done then we get major cracks in the foundations of everything built on top of dirt. Everything building, wall, road, expands and contracts here. I’ve noticed it’s mind boggling for newbies once they notice. With this slow and constant road construction the sewers are constantly being opened, moved, expanded etc. the areas of the “smell” are near the major sewer junctions near the major areas of road construction. You’ll know the major sewer locations because it’s like a wall you will hit on the freeway for exactly 1/8-1-4 of a mile. 🤣 those areas have been like that since the major road over hauls started in 2008 and when I was a young person and they built the additional freeways. Always the same area. 4. 5th generation from poor farmers. Arizona is unique in that when people came here during the dust bowl it was a mix of Hispanic and white and some Asian. Side note we also have the largest Native American lands in the country. About 50% of northern AZ is reservation. The valley is mostly surrounded by reservations also. The mix of Hispanic and white population was divided not by race but by socioeconomic status. We had very wealthy people of both Hispanic and white races and a heck of a lot of very poor white and Hispanic people. My great grandparents, grandparents and my dad all grew up in these mixed race areas. FYI- not a great place to grow up as a white kid. Might as well put a flashing red light on top of your head. You get snubbed by rich elites and then beat up at school. Funny story- my very Caucasian uncle ran the Las Victoria Locos in the late 70s. Got to wonder what he did to earn their respect 🤣. Growing up in the 80s and 90s in a middle class suburb it was a mix of white kids and Hispanic kids with a few Native American kids and 6 black kids. My graduating class of 1000 had 4 black kids. It’s changing as people move here but it’s a shock for some people who move from very diverse areas. Those 4 black kids were the most popular kids in the entire school. I’ve spoken to other people from other schools and same thing. Everyone knew them and wanted to hang out with them. They were different and interesting. We had exchange students from Brazil, Germany, and Africa. No one cared or gave attention to Brazil or the German. But J- and M from Africa were the coolest kids in school and won every thing in sports and student affairs. Every city has a ghetto. Historically they were cardboard shanty’s set up by seasonal migrants that came for farm work or long term Hispanic/Native American settlement areas/towns that had high migration in and out of the towns for seasonal labor. Illegals and immigrants have been part of AZ as long as I can remember. It’s like saying there is a cactus... it’s just there and there is no real notice or “feeling” about it. It’s like saying road. So it’s a road? What’s the point? Right? Well migrants aren’t spending year long money in these communities and they aren’t paying taxes then these areas are run in a self government local kind of way that prohibits any big changes to the way things on run. So unless you have the ability to convince long standing cultural leaders with motives and traditions then nothing is going to change in these areas. A few pockets have been revamped and remodeled with lots of legal battles but it’s hard. 5. Schools suck in AZ- these goes back to the rich generational wealth vs everyone else. They run the school system and make loads of money. AZ is ranked 49 in education. We have school choice- thank goodness but people have to want to drive their kids to school. Most have buses from the ghettos to nicer school if you choose. A majority of people do not attend schools in their neighborhoods. Even if you live in a wealthy upper class neighborhood they will all attend different schools. Same with poor neighborhoods.

Thank you for your candor. I think you speak about controversial subjects with respect. I lived in AZ 23 yrs, left for 17 yrs, and love being back. I found that it has become more diverse, to my liking. I would be very surprised if anyone of color would deny your observations about racism. Already, the weather is better this month, then many Mays that I have experienced. Keeping fingers crossed! Take advantage of all those road trips to nicer weather! FINALLY SOMEONE HAS RECOGNIZED THE REALITY OF COST OF LIVING! I have seen so many people talk about how it is so much more affordable...wages not keeping up for many Arizonans, and this was pre-Covid. I miss the feel of water in the air (California) consider lotioning up with shea products (LUSH), and maybe a cool mist humidifier. Thank you for your insights, and thoughtfulness!

@Darrel Denver Diverse means more than what you listed. Not sure why you are critical of my perception just because it may differ from yours. Definition of diverse 1 : differing from one another : people with diverse interests 2 : composed of distinct or unlike elements or qualities a diverse population. I might be a lot of things, but you know absolutely nothing about me. I see others posts about their experiences, including the GROUPS they feel are more rascist. As a Mexican myself, it makes me sad, but I know my individual heart. Why would someone try to negate what they have experienced? It appears you may have had some bad experiences, and I’m sorry about that, but I really think you do not know me at all. There is racism in many places , but I would be pretty surprised if a white person experienced it as often as a person of color. Yes, Arizona has always had a large Mexican population, but compared to when I lived here previously, it has become more diverse in many other areas. Not sure what you get out of antagonizing.

A lot of Phoenix specific problems, or sun valley issues but the racism being a problem everywhere accross the country is very true. Even in the liberal bubble down in Tucson you can see it especially if you go towards the rich side of town or the outside city limits. Phoenix metro is unique with its problems where its a big city with racism problems (even a large chunk of my family up there has unsavory opinions about the other half of my family's racial group). I think your right in the city planning/segregation playing a big role in that. I know more of my City's history and the destruction and displacement of barrios but I imagine Phoenix has a similar past.

Well it’s a tragedy seeing people getting shot in traffic but there are a lot of tragedy’s like child kidnapping like wtf the numbers are shocking and it’s not really talked about and yeah you may need a drivers license. you don’t shoot 5 feet from people like if there on the side walk you drive this 3 thousand pound piece of steel at 60 mph all the time and people drink and drive get distracted and you have soooo many more fatalities from car crashes and people just hitting a biker than guns. I love Arizona for the fact that I can have the ability to defend myself, it’s hard to defend yourself when you get into a head on collision with a drunk driver besides a seatbelt. I have a lot more shot to deal with. It’s comforting to know there are a lot of people around concealed carry to protect me if something happens than like 4 people in the county having one

I have witnessed A LOT more racism in the midwest than I have in the southwest. I cannot speak specifically for Phoenix (it is a major metro area afterall) but the smaller towns and cities in Arizona seem to be very tolerant and accepting of minorities whether black, brown, or native American. All I will say about the gun issue is, "shall NOT be infringed." Given that Arizona's gun violence is lower than the national average and quite a bit lower than the rates in more regulated areas, there is little reason to fear gun violence there or at least no more than midwestern states, including Minnesota. Criminals generally do not like it when their targets could be armed, so a lot of potential violent crimes are curtailed because the perpetrators do not want to get shot.

Another truth about Arizona is the huge roaches. We lived in in trailer. This thing lived behind the stove. It came out the first day and ran across my torso because my mom was trying to smack it with one of those old corn brooms. It was so fast. I thought it was a Big Rat. I said, That rat was huge. Mom was shaking as she explained that it was a roach and then proceeded to do the Bugs are over me dance. One day while taking a shower I felt something brush against my cheek. I looked up and there it was. It's antenna touched my cheek. I moved and it moved really fast. I it was thankfully up on the ledge of the shower. I carefully opened the door of the shower and stepped out and made my way out of the shower and ran to mom like that thing was on my back. Mom got the broom and began to smack. It never even faxed it! It ran behind the stove. Mom gave up on trying to kill it. I don't what they did with chemicals or bombs to make such a huge Roach. Ugh! It scarred me.....

There's many KZfaq channels that are operated by Arizona native blacks that explain how it's the people that come from these other areas of the country with their oppression mindset that have these issues.
