I have no idea if The Struggle Dales is actually the UK's steepest sportive. But as you'll see The Yorkshire Dales provides a sensational arena for a cycling event, amazing vistas and bristling with steep climbs and kickers, some of them well north of 30% .
Hope you enjoy the views, the climbs and the chaos - Jayne has delivered an amazing edit to provide a really good feel for what makes the event so special!
Was huge fun taking part in this with Michael Burns, Phil Rich (and DS Laura), Lee Baxter, David Raynham, Tommy Blake, Paul Hamblett, Top Cat (aka Tony), Will Smith, Paul Ingram, Ed Laverack (and DS Charlie), plus amazing support and photos from Michael Harran!
Kudos to all at The Struggle Events, for making the day run safely, efficiently and with fun and support !

Looks tough but awesome! Like I said on Ed's video, I've done the Fred Whitton a couple of times and this one looks similar. The route profile looks just as relentless, with a higher peak to boot. Gonna have to give it a go one day, especially as I'm just over the border in Lancashire, especially if there's a medal on offer (Fred Whitton doesn't give one, just a printed certificate and "Good effort" :D).

Excellent video. Nice to see other parts of the uk. Very Devon like in terms of the terrain without the sea and sand. Hard hard miles so credit to you all. Rounded off 290 miles in 7 days wondering when this would appear today and a treat to see when home from a super emotional Sidmouth loop to paraphrase you Phil 👌😂👍 out of interest does training indoor translate to outdoors or do the variables of traffic, wind, form etc change it more than expected? Thanks again.
@BikeRacingWithoutMercy
@BikeRacingWithoutMercy 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Pete 🙏- that’s super kind of you! And the hills are similar to the West Country - Exmoor also💯Noce work on your distance this week 💪. Definitely the power and fitness developed indoors translates outside. But traffic - traffic lights - pedestrians and cornering all do reduce the average power on a long loop. But with a good run like the one I had this Monday (vlog to come) - and stopped only 90sec out of 2hours, then the power is very similar

Awesome video and well done on smashing the struggle. It has inspired me to do a local Sportive in September. Just wanted to ask when you mentioned using your core especially when climbing out of the saddle how do you do that? Brace it to keep a solid torso? Thanks
@BikeRacingWithoutMercy
@BikeRacingWithoutMercy 3 жыл бұрын
Cheers VBML 🙏 - and that’s a really good objective. I always reckon get stuck in - give it a go and see what happens💯. With the core - I think for me a lot of the strength comes without bracing - because having done a lot of strength it is naturally stronger. But there are times when I’ll engage it a little more at high effort just to keep stable 👍

Great video Phil, ever tried ridding off feel without the power and HRM? I think a few rides like that could help become more efficient on the bike with gear selection etc before switching back to the data.

Hi Sam - it’s funny you say this. Because on Monday I was leading Paul on a route I’d plotted and had the map up most of the time. And it turned out to be one of my best rides - so for sure I think you are onto something - and I’ll be doing more without the data 💯

I’m lucky to have a couple of nice bikes - but I have to say for me the real joy is the activity itself and the time with others - and when I’ve hired much less expensive bikes abroad I’ve had as much pleasure and have not been that much slower 💯 So if it looks good - give it a try, the organisers of this event are lovely
