On the GT-40, when he was speaking about the push from the air that had passed through the radiators - I remember hearing engineering tests on Rolls-Royce Merlin-powered WW2 aircraft like the Spitfire where a re-design of the exhaust stacks gained something like 12 miles per hour for the plane's top speed - using the power of the exhaust for extra boost.

True also for the Mustang sister ship, the T-28. I flew the T-28B in Navy flight training as the first stop on my way to my Navy Wings. As I recall the NATOPS indicated some 12% added exhaust thrust at full power. There may have been a graph as well in the back of the book. The nine-cylinder radial was equipped with a two-stage supercharger, requiring a blower shift at 12,500ft during climb-out.

I think originally the Merlin's exhausts pointed forward, to minimise the risk of the pilot's view being obscured by the oil spots etc coming out.

They are great I will take them both but they are not from the original Shelby production they are continuation cars made in the 1980's and 90's hence the Fiberglass body on the Cobra and not the original Aluminum. If you listen to the videos he says so 4:50. The GT40 is a MK5 made in the 90's they were not the original Aluminum Chassis but in fact a unibody car as he describes at 26:18. Don't get me wrong I wish they were mine !

This was simply amazing. This is full of cars and parts that I drooled about when I was a kid, some 60 plus years ago. This took me way back. The story about the cobra and being told about the 427 won't fit, I had known about. But what a refresher. Aerodynamics. As a retired aircraft mechanic that one word sums up the movement of any object through the air. F-1 race car teams spend a fortune on this one aspect of the cars ability to out run its competitors.

I've seen one other SOHC in a Cobra and Jay Leno was driving it. A shop called Ford Power Parts used to be located on Carmenita Rd in Santa Fe Springs, Ca and the owner hosted an informal gathering/car show once a year. I was there with my buddy drooling over all the cool cars and parts when Jay Leno pulled up in a light blue Cobra with a friend. He got out, said hi to everyone, opened the hood and left to see the show. A cammer in all its glory was nestled in there like it had always been intended to be.

When the Pantera was released in the states, I was in high school. I drove to my local Lincoln Mercury dealer, walked right up to one on the showroom floor. It was a somewhat deep brown metallic. I looked over the sticker then the bottom line. $9999.95 I had to chuckle... they kept it under $10K. This in the day when I'd bought a brand new Toyota for 1/5th that amount. I just found it very hard to believe anyone had that kind of money, in those days, to buy something so... so impractical. Wasn't much you could do with it... long trips would have been painful. I'm 6'4" - couldn't get into it (doors locked of course) but just looking inside hurt. 🙂 A couple years earlier I'd tried to convince Dad he needed a Mustang 🙂Instead, he got a Mercury Montclair with a 390, 2bbl. No Mustang but she would go faster than I ought to have driven her.

37:28 De Tomosa was the manufacturer of the Pantera and Mangusta (Mongoose) which had Ford running gear. There may have been a Ghia connection.

Fascinating story behind Alejandro DeTomaso who was an Argentinian race car driver who started his car company in Modena Italy. He even built an F1 car for Frank Williams in 1970.

Pete Brock gave an interview explaining the aerodynamics of your car. He designed the air flow of the GT. At the time nobody gave it a second thought. After the win at Le Mans they all wanted the secrets. I spent 30 years as a Hang Glider pilot and flew Pete's UP wings and could appreciate his genius.

For the curious: The Detomaso Pantera were assembled in Italy and used a Ford sourced 351 Windsor engine in the first year of production (1971). Ford imported the cars for North America and sold them through their Lincoln Mercury dealer network that same year. In 1972 the engine was switched to a Ford 351 Cleveland and it used that engine right until 1988 and then switched to the Ford 5.0 V8. Ford ceased importing/selling the Pantera in 1975. The Pantera was built from 1971-1992 (7,260 cars total) There’s a lot more to the history of the car you can read about on Wikipedia

This is a great interview. He’s very informative. He’s correct that Phil was a genius and should have gotten more credit for their success in the movie. I assume that he’s very wealthy. What business is he in?

It reminds me of how much I missed out on due to drinking and raising hell in those days. I also have my positive side which was the fact that being a ford guy up to somewhere in the two thousand and fifteen era, I only liked fords. I as you may remember started for my dad in his shop in the fifties. So with that said, its the man your interviewing that has me excited. I have had in my hands and done some crazy stuff from the era your looking at right now. For example having had a alternator in my hands that we repaired, always wanted to build one myself. It looked to me like a poor boy turbo setup. I have so many many stories like this fellow that involve stuff like he did. I should of said "Proud to know he is still with us and letting others know parts of his knowledge on cars and trucks. I have a lady friend who has a first gen bronco that is one of eleven built, and only as Dennis Collins said four known to exist yet. Its the 351W with a four speed manual transmission. Please please don't let Dave drive any of this mans stuff.... seriously, he is old car challenged! He means well but his record speaks for itself. The bronco is owned by my nurse and she is just letting it set in her garage... its a driver right now and supposed to be quite nice. Its in my pea brain that this man would want it in his collection of "can't be found rigs" I grew up loving mechanics and anything old that made power. I am in very bad health, and its always a surprise anymore to just wake up alive
