Hey Mike. I don't comment on a lot of videos but wanted to let you know this video was definitely appreciated. I'm one of those 'non-handy' types so examples are really helpful. Besides the lighting project mentioned, I think beds for flipovers could be a 'game changer' item for portable folks like when smitty sleds took off.

@ReelLifeWithMike
@ReelLifeWithMike 4 ай бұрын
This does have a couple grommets but other than that I’ll park my truck real close. They actually secure quite well. The other thing is drill a couple holes( not to the water) and then use the shaved snow to put around the tent

Hey friend, take a closer look at your muffler, flip it over as it has a drain for moisture. Also I’ve found it works better slightly pointed down instead of up in weather. Order a 78 inch exhaust pipe if you prefer it further away. I’m used to the noise as I use the same model to heat my pole barn office and have the box mounted inside with ceramic insulation and a thru hull taking the exhaust out.

Great video, Mike! I was just searching KZfaq for videos on this exact heater. I just got back from Red Lake ice camping during this last cold snap. I ran propane in my Eskimo Outbreak 850XD and after 4 days of camping I had to scrape 1/4" of ice off the inside of my walls because of the moisture. I'm over the propane. A couple of questions: 1. I'm the least handy guy on the planet so would I have to modify the heater like you did? I just wanted to bring it in my shelter and just leave it inside with the exhaust going under the skirt or out the door I don't use. Is that possible? 2. Does that heater make in incessant clicking noise I've heard from others? Thanks, as always, for the great videos!
@ReelLifeWithMike
@ReelLifeWithMike 4 ай бұрын
Depends on how cold the diesel heater may not be able to keep up with the size of the 850XD. IN MY 650 IT’LL STAY PRETTY WARM BUT NOT LIKE YOU’LL BE SWEATING ESPECIALLY WHEN IT GETS OVER -20. AS FOR THE CLICKING NOISE, IT’S REALLY NOT THAT BAD AFTER IT RUNS FOR ABOUT HALF AN HOUR. IT’S A LOT LOUDER WHEN IT FIRST STARTS UP. THE EASIEST MODIFICATION, FOR THAT IS TO ACTUALLY UNSCREW, THE FUEL PUMP FROM THE CASING AS THAT CAUSES EXTRA VIBRATION AND WRAP A LITTLE BIT OF FOAM AROUND IT.

I have no idea why it went all capitals. Sorry about that.

I really appreciate the feedback, Mike! That's exactly the info I was looking for. I did run 2 Buddy heaters when it hit -25° with -40°+ wind chills. When it's that cold I figured 1 diesel heater likely wouldn't cut it. But running a diesel heater and supplementing with a Buddy heater as needed should help keep the moisture down. I don't need it too warm in my shack. Just above freezing is good for me. Maybe I'll get 1 and try it. If it works well I'll snag a second one. I carry 3 Mr Buddy's and 4 20lb cylinders with me anyway. 2 diesel heaters and a gas can can't take up much more space than that. 😅😅 Love the content man. Keep pumping out the videos!

@ReelLifeWithMike

Actually yes that was the first plan. I actually made a custom diesel heater set up which had the exhaust on the outside. This one that was sent to me had it the other way around. I’m actually planning on flipping the diesel heater on the inside so the exhaust will be outside. I’ll be doing a little video in the future with it as well.

Mike, why not just replace the back window with a homemade vent plugs? That way you don't destroy your sled.
@ReelLifeWithMike
@ReelLifeWithMike 4 ай бұрын
The actual reasons I had the holes to start was I had the diesel heater installed on the interior with the exhaust outside. It was a bit to loud to film with it that way so I already had a hole there. I’m home sight I may still try to make an insulated enclosed box for the diesel heater to keep it on the inside that way I don’t have to pack as much. But I should do a video on retro fitting a window vent. Thanks for the idea.

@ReelLifeWithMike
@ReelLifeWithMike 4 ай бұрын
That’s gonna be a real tough one because it depends on usage. I think the jackary has a little bit more usage for the general public compared to the 135 power box but if you check out Dakota’s website, they recently came out with a power box just like Jakary, which I think is such an awesome unit. Definitely something worth checking out. But overall that 135 power box is more than anyone would ever need which is awesome that you never have to worry about running out of power.

Mike, great video but I must critique it and a wee but disappointed you did not highlight it. That power socket is a kettle socket, IE AC voltage. That is deadly! HCALORY made a huge mistake fitting this type of socket as its easy to plug in 120v or 240v power. Its been highlighted on other channels. Its an accident waiting to happen. Colin
@ReelLifeWithMike
@ReelLifeWithMike 4 ай бұрын
That’s 100 percent correct. The reason I dident mention it for the overnight set up is that it’s will only ever run off a 12V circuit. As for the interior plug this heater actually comes with one that is a 110 so if someone bought a different style I assume it would be up to them to know but you are correct. I was supposed to do a diesel heater only video but there were some things I told them they need to do before actually reviewing it as there were some issues.

@ReelLifeWithMike
@ReelLifeWithMike 3 ай бұрын
I have very little issues with the buddy heater other then after a couple days using it I can decently feel a bit crappy. The diesel heater is just a better choice for me. My flip over, 99 percent of the time goes from the back of the truck to on the ice and set up so I’m not worried about the holes. I could easily run the ducting through the skirt as well. It’s just an option that I have been using for the last couple years.

If you are worried about carbon monoxide you should be pulling in fresh cold air into the heater instead of pulling it out of the tent. There's no way that the exhaust will go back in the intake because heat rises. Cold air stays low and your exhaust is rising up like crazy.
@ReelLifeWithMike
@ReelLifeWithMike 4 ай бұрын
On a calm day, you’re 100% correct. About a month ago we had a slight breeze where my truck was parked just behind the tent. The way the wind was the air actually circled around which caused the open air intake from the external suck in some of the exhaust fumes from the external. Thank God diesel smells, and when I move my truck, it went away as the exhaust had enough movement. I’ve tried the heat vent, lower, middle, higher, and after about 30 different variations this is where I found the most consistent temperature throughout the whole airspace. but I really do appreciate your comment as I am 100% not perfect. If there’s anyway I could do better I would greatly take criticism. Thanks again I’ll keep that in mind.
@anonymous4507
@anonymous4507 4 ай бұрын
@@ReelLifeWithMike Thank you. I enjoy your videos and I wasn't trying to start an argument. I am looking at switching from propane to a diesel heater myself. The problem with propane heaters is they constantly re-burn the air inside the tent, where-as these diesel heaters can be set up to burn fresh outside air almost eliminating the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Provided the exhaust gasses don't enter the intake. I am going to try two sections of exhaust pipe with guy lines so it doesn't fall over and get it higher in the air and just suck cold fresh from the outside. A guy could even put duct work on the intake to get it further away from the exhaust too. I guess I am just a stickler for fresh air.

You ever add kerosene to the diesel?
@ReelLifeWithMike
@ReelLifeWithMike 4 ай бұрын
I used to run straight kerosine but then I heard you need the oil and lubrication from the diesel. So if anything I’ll mix either half-and-half or put a quarter kerosine in. I’m not sure if this is the right information but from what I heard diesel still burns slightly hotter than kerosene. I’ve tried to search it, but says yes once says no so if you have a better answer, feel free to let me know lol.
