the level 99 thing is in most NIS games, and was originally an oversight with how the exp is handled going past 99. They kept this in their games as its a cool and fun mechanic. Disgaea 1 and 2 also have it.

The level 99 experience thing is because you gain experience based on what the target would need to level up. For levels 1-100 the EXP to next level follows an exponential formula, then 100-9999 is a separate, linear formula that forms something of a tangent line for the 1-100 curve. The end result is that level 99 is a big spike in EXP. I don't know exactly, but I'd guess level 90-99 or 95-99 are all higher exp than level 100, 99 is just the highest.

In the official Strategy Guide, they use map 5-5 and some "creative" stacking of the Geo blocks to reach the 35 billion damage

It's too bad Disgaea 3 never got a re-release on newer platformers. I bought a PS3 because Disgaea 3 was an exclusive at the time! I also bought a PS4 just to play Disgaea 5!

D3 is listed as playable in the RPCS3 emulator, never tested it but can be a way to enjoy the game. It even has trophy support if you wanna hunt the plat

I will say D3 so far is fully playable on the vita emulator, Vita3K and I’m playing it on the steam deck

The Level 99 exploit is a natural byproduct of how EXP is awarded per kill, and the Leveling curve (Do keep in mind, this has been a thing in all games except Disgaea 6): Whenever you kill an enemy, you are awarded an amount of EXP proprotional to what it would take them to reach the next Level, times a hidden multiplier from their class, meaning that classes that Level up slower and have better multipliers are much better for killing when grinding. Due to the way the EXP curve works, the first 100 Levels use a different formula which proportionally scales much faster, meaning that to reach Level 100 from 99 you would need about as much EXP as you would to reach Level 323 from 322, making it an optimal breakpoint to grind until you can fight enemies Level 323.

@mudkipmatt3793 I am pretty sure it was originally unintended, as the first two games never had stages with EXP boosters and enemies on breaking points for the Stronger Enemy Bills reaching Level 99, but from D3 onwards the devs seemingly always included at least one of these stages, so I'd wager they do want to help with the grinding somewhat.

@BigJay_ It depends on the game; prior to Disgaea 5, you always lost Skill EXP and Weapon Mastery when Reincarnating (and in D1, you also lost gour Demon Rank), meaning you wanted to delay it as much as possible. Even ignoring the lost Skill / Mastery per Reincarnation, initial Mana costs keep doubling up each time, meaning that eventually you won't be able to gain enough Mana just by reaching Level 322. You may consider early Reincarnations in D3 onwards, where Unique Units (DD2/D5 onwards for Generic Units) gain +5% Aptitudes up to a cap of +25% per Reincarnation in a Tier equal or greter of what they had, so doing 5 quick Reincarnations with the last one being at Genius for the +10 Base Stat Growth boost at only 3100 base Mana can give you a strong early boost, if you can level back to 322 fast through things like Magichange, Towers or Combos.

Time to continue my journey to platting 3. Even though the Vita version has a lot of differences, I know a bunch of mechanics from ps3 Disgaea 3 still work for grinding so I'm sure it'll be a big help to watch :D

Added note on the level 99 trick, as far as I know its a series wide thing from Disgaea 1 and even carries over into some of the spinoffs like Makai Kingdom and such

I say Disgaea 3 Magic is ok to use for grainding. It is not as fast then getting Big Bang BUT it haves more damage potential. Like use skull/Magic knight with Aqua Demon as Magichange. Mass blaster=90% Damage boost but negative to magic is you need A LOT Mana to upgrade skill to 3x3 AoE.
