Who doesn’t love an underdog? This horse wasn’t even in the race till another horse gets scratched and had to start all the way over in the farthest gate. What a job maneuvering through the ENTIRE field and the fact that the announcer didn’t even pick up on it (he was so focused on the favorites up front) that the surprise in his voice as he sees what is happening makes it even better.❤

From this perspective you can see the spectacular maneuvering by Jockey Leon. The path to victory opened for them and RICH STRIKE’s tremendous strength and power shows. He could have kept running as he flew by the other horses. He was so charged up he just wanted to keep running which led to his encounter after the race.🌹🌹He is endearingly called ‘Richie’ by his groomers, the Dixsons, Sr. & Jr., who say he is a gentle horse. ‘Richie’ is magnificent ❣️

Rich Strike has massive good genes. His father Keen Ice beat Triple Crown winner in similar fashion in 2015. And his Granddady, Curlin was the very famous champion and 2007 Preakness winner!

Same colors as Seabiscuit. Just realized that. :) Did you know Rich Strike is out of a Smart Strike mare? So was Mine That Bird just different mare. Lady Luck worked overtime getting him in and again in the race. Amazing!

Secretariat rightly gets high praise for running away with it in the Belmont, but Rich Strike's Derby run here is a master class in maneuvering thorough heavy traffic, finding the hole, and just letting it rip.
