Hi Dr Manik. I'm an img currently prepping for step 1and i wish to match into UofPenn internal medicine residency. If you would be so kind to make a video on what they look for /prefer in their applicants cause ive heard its a very competitive/difficult to get into program . I can work to craft my cv towards the kind of applicant they would take.

Great content Manik but wanted to share some pov on the information presented. If you have a target audience that is IMG, resident salary will seem high because you will have foregone the debt accrued by home graduates. If you were a US or Caribbean medical graduate, then no, the resident salary is terrible with nearly 10% interest on half a million dollars of loan. The other aspect is that if you live in a big city like LA or NY, then the cost of living will be nearly what your salary alone. The other thing to note is that you are a psychiatry resident, which is comparatively less grueling in training hours to internal medicine or some surgical specialty. That is perhaps why psychiatry is becoming more competitive as today's generation values work-life balance.

At 30:46 you say that a friend was able to get a sub internship at Duke being a research fellow. How did they get that being an IMG? SubIs are reserved for third or final year students. Is there a link to this sub internship? Additionally, Duke sponsors students from accredited LCME schools and takes in students through VSLO only. Can you elaborate on this?
@manikmadaan
@manikmadaan 3 ай бұрын
They had a research position at duke and got the sub I through networking
@daaxab
@daaxab 3 ай бұрын
Do they have a public account or a way I can reach out to them? Because as I mentioned already in the initial comment, SubIs can't be done by graduates. They'll need to have a limited/restricted/temporary license issued by the State Medical Board to do it unless it was not a SubI and an observership and then the preceptors allowed the observer to have hands-on xp which is not legal but a very commonly practiced thing in the IMG circle.

Hi Manik, I have to disagree with you on a point. I was in peds residency and the program was very toxic and racist. in fact Im indian and one co resident said many racist things to my face. There were two other IMGs who were from a muslim country and people said many things about them as well. so always keep your guard up and never think anywhere is safe. I was even called a "foreigner" when I went to go get a check up at a doctor's office. So yes be careful because one persons perspective is not anothers.

Yes it does. If a PD is from India and they know govt colleges generally get students who were academically better that could effect their decision regarding ranking or whom to even interview
