When I was a kid my parents took us to Myrtle Beach for vacation.... along the way we had a flat tire. We all got out and waited for my dad to change it.... I was wondering around on the side of the road that was near a field.... as I was walking around I realized there were hundreds and hundreds of these things growing in this field next to the road. The ground was spongy and there were mounds of moss. The plants were growing among tall weeds... I was floored by how many there were. I also noticed there were many sundews all around that were bright red and about the size of a quarter... there were so many you could hardly walk without stepping on them. This happened back in the 70's. Years later I went back to Myrtle Beach for a vacation and tried to find the spot (I knew it was near Conway, SC).... but for the most part the area had been developed into a golf course.... I was never able to find the spot and I doubt it even exist anymore.

dont you love it, the government jails or fines you if you take some from the wild, however its ok for someone to lay a suitcase of $$$ on the table to develop a golf course. Same is true with the marijuana push in the states. It was a horrible offense if caught selling or growing, and having a felony charge slapped on you, however down the road the same state that jailed you and wrecked your life determines its ok to sell due to the revenue it will receive......

Thank you soo much Devin! I have been looking for more detailed information on caring for venus flytraps for awhile now. You've provided more info in this video than anywhere else. I have 3 plants at the moment and I believe they are all of the dented variety, they aren't really red at all but have the short hairs, got 2 from the grocery store and 1 from a rare plant grower. I try to feed them once a week since they are inside but I've noticed when I feed one trap, all of the traps tend to close, not right away but they're often still closed a week to 2 weeks later. Is this normal? Am I overfeeding?

Hey there! So I’m in la and my traps usually flourish and are doing very well actually! I just recently repotted one that outgrew it’s pot. However we are having a heatwave currently and yesterday was VERY hot. I came home today to see my it very wilted and all it’s traps flopped over. I rewatered & sprayed it well and the leaves and traps seem to be stiffening back up. But I don’t feel like I am out of the woods yet. Do you think it could be a bad repotting job or the bad heatwave? My other traps were fine. Maybe it was the combo of repotting and the heat?

I'm from the UK and had one as a kid. I always assumed they were from the Amazon too. About 5 years ago I moved to Wilmington NC, which as this video says, is the center of the relatively small area where these grow in the wild. I knew then I was keeping them too wet, keep them moist, so I then watered them from the bottom. I had success after that and kept them a year or two, one lasted 4 years in an unheated greenhouse. What you feel is too hot could be just fine for plants. You need to figure out what their growing conditions should be and go from there. What I mean by that is, if you have a spot that gets morning sun and afternoon shade, maybe it's OK. If you have a spot that has all day sun, then it could be fine as well, if you put them in a tray of water and don't let it go dry. While each growing zone can have general directions, it's up to you to figure out what micro-climates or locations you have around your home and how to best support the plants you want to have.

I live in Colorado. I have started a Venus Flytrap in a terrarium. Do terrariums encourage growth in dry climates like mine?

I'm wondering the same. I just bought one, so should I keep it in a pot or a terrarium?

Don't keep them in a terrarium, dry air is ok for them, just give them direct sunlight and have them sitting in a pot with destilled water at all times

Do not put them in a terrarium, just grow them outside and keep them moist. Colorado’s dryness isn’t that bad

What other carnivorous plants grow in the same soil as a Venus Fly Trap? Google tells me Intermediate Sundew and Yellow Pitcher Plant. Also, how do you keep mosquitoes from spawning in the standing water of the tray?

You guys never discuss the challenges of growing VFTs in central Florida. That would be a very interesting video guide.
@pershop4950
@pershop4950 3 жыл бұрын
Any video can't discuss challenges of growing VFTs in every location. All it can do is provide general guidelines. It's up to you as the owner of the plants, to find what works in your region or micro-climate. Eg, many people are confused by how much sun or water a plant needs. That's because there is the general guidelines, and then there are the guidelines that works for some people in some area . Watering 2-3x a week isn't going to work as well as having a pot sit in a tray, if they weather or sun is really hot. And saying it can be in full sun in Wisconsin summer is different from full sun in Florida summer or in Arizona summer.

Yeah, I live in Whitehorse, Yukon. I've been growing my Venusflytrap's for more than 20 years on my windowsill same location year round. (my windowsill is very cold in winter. 5 to 10 C) and midnight sun in summer. Ironically, venusflytrap is a great indoor plant in Yukon.

I had the opposite problem at the equator. Too much sun all year round with no easy way to hibernate... killed 2 of my plants before giving up

I love that I found you here. I’ve got mine in 50/50 peat moss and sand inside red Dixie cups. They’re just Babies. I keep em soaked in water, which I am on well water, and Info I found online was telling me they didn’t like direct sunlight, so I put em in the window. They’re not doing so well. I’m gonna pull em and replant em in new moss/sand, soak em with distilled water, and put em back out on the porch with my other plants. I hope they’ll rebound.

they do fine in direct sun, and depending on your growing region, it could be as little as morning sun/afternoon bright shade or all day sun. your well water is also suspect. It may have many minerals that are not good for VFTs. the generally accepted source of water are rain, reverse osmosis water, or distilled water. Anything else, you'll have to experiment and learn how it affects your carnivorous plants, including well water or spring water.
