Sony ZV-E1 is an amazing camera and with it's USB Streaming mode (which streams up to 4K 30) it could be the ultimate webcam, except for one big issue! I found a solution to the webcam overheating issue!! This is a great video!! very helpful. I have been using my ZV-E1 as webcam @ 1080 30fps, and I notice it would overheat within 30 to 40 mins. I couldn't believe it. It's not even recording. After watching this video, and learned about some settings. I decided to turn off the USB charging feature on the ZV-E1, and using a dummy battery connected to a USB-C power bank. That resolved the webcam overheating issue. If charging with USB-C at the same time, adds additional heat from the charging process. Without USB-C charging, I was able to use the ZV-E1 as webcam for more than 2 hours with overheating at all. Just wanted to share with everyone here.

Does it overheat and shut down even with the cut off temperature set to high? - are you streaming over USB or using HDMI out?

I had the same settings and maybe about 30-40 minutes until overheating, great tip, I'll try it next time I set up the camera to stream.

Have you tried this with 4k by chance? and are you using a dummy battery? I'm really interested in getting this camera, but just want to make sure I have a solution for the overheating since I will be using the camera as a webcam as well. Thanks!

Yes, with 4k, no dummy battery, I just turned the charging off. The charging itself adds a lot of heat, and turning it off gets me over an hour of video time, which has been enough for me up to now. @@AshRedline

@@AshRedline I bought my ZV-E1 a few weeks ago, I was able to stream at 4k 30fps for 6.5 hours over USB-C (connected to a Macbook), no overheat warning, but I did have the battery door open as I heard that helps. This was in a 25c room. During this 6.5 hours the battery dropped from 100% to 83%. Extremely happy with this result.

Thank you for your vids - very helpful. I primarily use my ZV-E1 as a webcam and for Zoom calls. I have it mounted in a fixed position. I was experiencing terrible overheating at 4K 30P and was getting a warning at 56mins. Very disappointing… until I purchased a small 80mm USB fan which I clip onto the back of the camera. It’s super quiet (17 dba) - blows directly at the problem area, doesn’t block any of the controls and now I get unlimited streaming at 4K with no warnings. I admit - it’s not the most elegant, but an easy enough fix. (Amazon US: AC Infinity MULTIFAN S1, Quiet 80mm USB Fan, $11.99 USD). Cheers!

@@VicBarry Used it for a full-day online workshop (8hrs) with no warnings or overheating. (Dummy battery + HDMI output). It was warm - by no means hot. 80mm fan targets that precise area behind the LCD panel almost perfectly when mounted flush against the camera. It's quiet at full speed and not picked up by my condenser mic about 20" (50 cm) away. I make no claims about the onboard mic. The fan has a large footprint, but I didn't want to mess with splicing cables on a PC fan and rigging a USB power source.

Good stuff Vic. More I see reviews and videos like this, the happier I am I waited after hearing the rumors of overheating. I use my ZV-E10 with a simple HDMI capture card (there are the cheap ones but I opt'd for the Camlink) and stream 4k 24p in Zoom, Webex, Meet, OBS, and any other stream/conference/capture software no problem. I've had to use it for several hours straight hosting a few different education conferences. Never any issues. And I live in AZ and my room temps get upwards of mid 80's, but regularly around 82. $700 for the camera, bought a Viltrox 23mm f/1.4 for like $250, and the Elgato for $99, so just over $1000. Been a solid studio camera for that price, but I also shoot the heck out of it in the field. Again, never had it overheat. I mean, Sony created this now extreme vlogger niche for the ZV-1 as a way to address the overheating, so I suppose they would just simply tell you that you are trying to use it outside its' intended purpose, and that most web sessions are "usually an hour", or most people don't shoot long format, or those kinds of spins.
@VicBarry
@VicBarry Жыл бұрын
Capture card is definitely the way to go. But again, all depends on what you’re doing. There’s definitely not a one size fits all

I've had issues with my zv-e1 overheating using usbc streaming. Even dropping it down to 1080p it still overheats. No overheating at 4k or 1080p when connecting it via the mini hdmi. Not sure what the deal is with that since streaming over usb is an advertised feature.
@VicBarry

Hey Taylor, yeah. To be honest it’s a combination of size and potentially trying to get too much out of the usb c port. But that’s just a wild guess.

Hello. I'm looking for a model that I can use in live broadcasts. Photographing my lines at home and broadcasting live will not be an external purpose. There is a capture card and I can easily connect it to the PC from there. My budget is $1000 including lens. Would this model suit my purpose or would you recommend another model? I would be very grateful if you could help me with this.

VIC! My maaaaaan! 🤩 awesome presentation! I am considering Streaming in the near future with my ZV-e10, which is basically pretty much the same like her newer „sibling“ and this video will help me get along when it’s time. 2 questions: was the quality set to 4 k when it died! And is 4K (which the ZVe10 doesn’t even supports) even necessary for a simple Picture in Picture of my face? 😅 A full screen makes sense in 4K but for a little party in the corner of the screen is awesome in 1080p to save a little bit of battery and temperature. Maybe this is a thing worth considering for our gamer guys and girls 👍🏻
@VicBarry

Hey. No. Was set to 1080 from what I remember. 4k isn’t necessary, depends on the audience but when you factor in KZfaq compression etc Most people have been streaming happily in 1080 for quite some time without issue.

Hi Vic - awesome vid! Can I ask, any suggestions on how to stream in 4K 24p while also recording a separate video file for the screen? I can do it in Descript but it's only 4K 30p because of the camera's streaming settings. And eCamm live will allow me to record both my talking head and the presentation, but burns them together as picture in picture vs two separate files. Thanks for another great video.

I also use the Elgato 4k USB/HDMI converter and I like it better than using the USB-C for the Webcam Livestreaming. I rather use a dummy battery because I know that when you are constantly charging and recharging a battery it will not last long. Plus the fact if you don not have a dummy battery than the camera will stay on during the recording/streaming process using the charging of the USB-C port. Cheers! ZV1m2 in your future?

dummy a danger to camera ? never had a issue but if you are worried get a sony one. on the overheat add a fan it will run forever i did 10h webcam tests. again see my vid on webcam use. using the usb-c is nice but bt will be disabled so is picture profiles and a few other things i would use hdmi out to a convertor (i use a old atem mini) then bt works and better you have usb-c free and connect a ipad using usb-c with monitor+ you now have full nice program display with all the tools you need rgb, focus tools, vector scopes but also camera control including zoom, focus and all the settings. the bt is important since you can program one button to say switch product focus on/of.
