The male idols suffer the worst with being objectified. The shipping, fan fiction that sexualise them, inappropriate treatment of minors & the fanservice which is unnecessary, there's no need for it, it creates more problems with the excessive shipping. These things are the worst things about K-pop, idols are not objects, they are real people and they always deserve to be respected and treated fairly from the fans and from within the industry itself

Istg I've seen a few people that complaining about older fanboy liking a group that has minor and calling those fanboys as "p3do" while they're literally an almost 30 y.o woman that save many thirst trap of idols which some of them still a minor 🤦‍♀️ like the one I saw are that one older fanboy that go to one rookie MnG and lot of people called him a pedo, while they literally repost niki enha thirst trap. My point is that, most people actually normalized this kind of stuff when it comes to male idols. Like whether its a girls or boy group it's was never okay

Yes they do. And because girl enjoy it, they don't tend to see the problem with it until idols speak up about it The abuse is also worse. They suffer at the hands a whole lot more and are even left to starve and freeze because their companies don't want to spend money on food or utilities Sadly. It's a whole lot worse. They use to have this fan meeting where the fans were allowed to touch idols anywhere they'd like and most of the fans would go for private areas and the male idols just had to endure it and put in a smile I can only imagine how many videos would have been made about this if it was a female group

I said this before and I'm saying it again explicit fanfics are way too normalised by fans. Last time i wrote about this problem one of the explicit fanfic writer who was also a minor started calling me over sensetive and she cursed at everyone who complains about her "art" not just this but an adult also came to argue with me and her solution was to not read fanfics if we don't like them. That's so true!! I also came across some ff's and it's sometimes really disgusting, what they make *real people* do in those stories. It's not just disrespectful but sick to se*ualize idols to this extent!! I'm glad that you spoke up about it to the creator. Even though she and some others might not find it problematic at all, other readers might rethink to read such ff's.
@eykyra
@eykyra Жыл бұрын
I think everyone is allowed to build fantasies, and it's only normal to base them on celebrities or fictional characters. As someone who has been playing narrative rpg I understand the need of basing a character on a real person or using their physical appearance as reference for them. However, in our websites we always had the rule that you can't use the person's name for your character as well as their image, in a way that the character is not separated from the real person (I mean you could call a character Park Jimin for example because at the end of the day is a common name but not create a character that looked, was named and pretty much represented bts' Jimin). So I got really surprised when I first encountered kpop ff and they all used their real names and references, sometimes they aren't even characters, they write about the idols themselves. I think that if it's something you wouldn't want that real person to find, that's when you know you shouldn't put it out. There's a difference between "I imagined my character to look like this idol" and openly naming it like that and even provide it with other real life acquaintances, because you know you only are taking advantage of the unlikelihood that they end up reading it, but you know that if they did so they'd feel bad about it. It's something to reflect upon, but sadly most ff writers and consumers are too young to draw that line, which is a problem in itself because I find it really concerning that people so young are coming up with those types of sexual fantasies and especially relationship ideals because they are almost always toxic and even dangerous. Whenever there's "bdsm" involved there are no traces of boundaries that real bdsm is about, it's straight up abuse, and they are glorifying that shit. It's alarming

These stories are fiction so why are they not using some random names? It's because these people are dying to make their couples come true in some way. In the end they do that with their fanfics. It's difficult because it's clear it's just fiction as it says so in the name, yet it's very, very uncomfortable for the people involved. Best example group is BTS. V told his fans to stop live in their own illusion and touch some gras. He is truly right.

OnlyOneOf isnt a good example for this point, the members choreograph their own dances and stated multiple times that they are comfortable with each other. Came here to defend OnlyOneOf, but I see a lot of LyOns have already done that. That choreography really shouldn’t be in this edit. They have a unique concept that is mature, oriented on the same sex relationship and helps the members of the LGBTQIA+ community feel represented. And that is a very brave thing to do, especially in K pop. So please do no devalue what they do by saying they are being forced into it. I do agree that fan service goes over the top in some cases tho. It’s even worse for Thai BL actors, I can never watch those “shows” because they do feel like an extension of the drama fantasy into the real live and a fuel to the delulu fire.

Fanfics exist not only in kpop. 1D members also have a lot of ff 18+ Although I write ff too, I am alwars focused on story. The characters can be easily replaced with another person because I treat them as an actors. But still I can't read pure 18+ ff because it makes me uncomfortable. No matter if it is a ship ff or X Reader. The books should be about story you want to share, not about s*x. Unfortunately they often turn out as a p*rn and nothing else. And it's not always the writers fault, but often the people who can't take it as a fiction but push it into reality (Taekookers and other toxic shippers.) I always wondered why members Shippers are not as bad as other shippers. When a person ship herself with an idol she/he is delulu and right away cancelled. It's not something we can accept (and I agree). But then someone is a shippers of two idols everyone is fine with "it's for fun". Imo it should be cancelled the same way. keep in mind that ni-ki is one of the most sexualised member in enhypen since he was 14. he is also younger than 3 newjeans member and debuted almost 2 years before them. we don’t if the other minor members of the group were uncomfortable with the fever choreography but ni-ki wasn’t since he only sees dancing as an art and has been doing so many similar choreos since he was a kid but he was so sexualised for it. But there’s one thing that made him really uncomfortable was shipping with members especially another minor member, sunoo (he’s an adult now but that is not the point). anyone who knows enha since iland knows how close both of them were. they were always next to each other. after the show ni-ki was really homesick and couldn’t sleep so he would cuddle with sunoo. he said he was used to cuddling with his sisters in japan so it wasn’t a big deal to both of them. they were so close that they even celebrated ‘sunki day’ and post a selfie of them 24th of every month which is sunoo birth date. they eventually stopped it when they debuted. people just assumed they were busy. but people started shipping them more and it turned more romantically. that’s when ni-ki tried not to sleep next to sunoo. he even made it a monthly goal to sleep alone. it took him months and there were days he slept next to him but they stopped talking about it. ni-ki eventually became insomniac. he wasn’t really diagnosed with it but the members were concerned with his sleeping habits. he would stay awake till 5am or 6am and go to the company at 10. they were so many times ni-ki says he can’t sleep and only sleep in between practice and schedule but everyone blamed the company. eventually sunoo and ni-ki’s friendship was only behind the scenes. ni-ki is shipped with other members too but when it comes to sunoo it’s always romantically. that’s why for people who became a fan now would never know how close these two were. it’s not just them but every member in the group. these shipping culture made enha’s relationship in front of camera unknown. their shipping made everyone member distant from each other in front of camera. whenever a member says ‘i ate with this member’ fans immediately say ‘ohhh these two went on a date’ like recently sunoo and ni-ki went out for dinner together alone with no manager in japan and now we have these shippers making edits of them. sunoo once took ni-ki’s new toothbrush without telling him and ni-ki was just making jokes about it then we have shippers saying they share same brush. this is why they keep their friendship in private but we have these anti say that ni-ki bullying sunoo and ignoring sunoo but whereas ni-ki is uncomfortable since you ship them romantically.

I think it was a smart decision to keep their relationship private and I actually consider that oversharing those private details is the origin of the problem. I'm not blaming them for doing that but the industry itself, it just has become too normalized for kpop content to show too much of the idol's private life and companies are pretty much aware what's gonna happen when sharing that content. They expect the shipping and encourage it because it gives them views and engagement. One thing is doing content like games and such and that fans can appreciate their dynamics naturally and whole other story is showing who they sleep with. Some idols are always gonna be closer than others, some aren't even friends, some are like siblings, and that's ok and it should never be put for the public to judge upon. Their private life is too exposed to fans scrutiny, that needs to stop. Especially when they are so young, because in a few years they can't regret of having shared that info earlier and there's no turning back. Kpop industry is alarmingly loose when it comes to protect their young artist's integrity and privacy (I'm assuming maybe their parents or tutors are ok with it but still). Also, about fever, I wouldn't entirely make fans responsible of that. He might not have manifested to be uncomfortable with the choreography, but that doesn't take away from the fact the whole song and concept of the performance was too mature for a group with minor members to begin with. That was actually the first thing I thought when I discovered enhypen with drunk dazed, I was horrified to find out their ages. My first reaction was like "kids shouldn't be doing this". Maybe it's harder to notice for younger fans but as someone who's 10 years older than him, I was completely shocked. I do like the song, and the performance, but I still think hybe never should have given it to idols so young. Not that it justifies or takes away any blame from adult fans making any kind of sexual commentary about a minor idol, of course not. But it shows a problem in the whole system, because it happens with many groups. The first step into sexualizing minors is making them look and pass as way beyond their ages. I think there's a problem with watching a group and not being able to tell, at plain sight, which members are literal kids. It's insane

OnlyOneOf should definitely NOT be in here.. They have said so many times that they are comfortable with the choreo and they are the ones that choreographed it in the first place.. Also when a fan asked them on a vlive if they feel uncomfortable with fanservice.. which they didn't have to read btw.. they said that they (specifically Junji) don't do it for the fans and that they feel comfortable enough with the members to joke around.. I don't think you would know this if you don't stan them.. Their recent solo songs are all about same-sex relationships and the different dynamics of it etc.. They didn't stop even when they received backlash because of that step from Libido choreo.. As a person of the LGBTQ+ community, it makes me really happy to see such representation that too in KPop but dismissing it as fanservice and assuming they feel uncomfortable discourages artists to make music on same-sex relationships..

it's sad that male sexualisation is never talked about enough. i don't understand why women hate being objectified but don't hesitate to objectify men. i personally couldn't stan boy groups anymore as some of the fans are raging with hormones and don't know how to control it. i hate the idea of "hard stans" and i hate twitter pages that make roleplay porn scenarios with actual explicit videos where they fantasise about male idols fornicating with each other. i think calling idols "idols" is a huge reason why many k-pop fans don't see these performers as humans but rather objects as idols are meant to be worshipped and objectified. the entire industry is just so fucked up. fanservice is often overdone. i know sometimes there is real chemistry between male idols as colleagues and friends but it can be so obvious sometimes when it's being forced; it's just upsetting that these people we look up to are treated like literal dogshit.

Perhaps me being a male fan who also, happens to be gay I have entirely different view. Objectifying, I feel like a person is going to do that regardless of if they show their abs or not especially if they're a saesang. In regards, to fan service its nothing like 3rd gen when I first, got into kpop not even close and out of all the groups I liked in 3rd gen only 2 are still active sadly. Fashion I won't speak on most I pay attention to that is if it looks good or nice color. For choreography, if one found every hip thrust inappropriate there would be no choreography and it would be a lot like that sad excuse that the USA calls music. For onlyoneof, they chose to do that choreography on their own and there was a point in doing so that largely got ignored by stupid people proving their whole point and even if they're all heteronormative which sadly, probably are feeling like your not ignored by society and your existence matters it's a big deal for people who have to fight just for the right to live. Abuse from agency that one is an issue out of all these I think the biggest one. Although, I would also add that that abuse from saesang and the way agencies pay their artists especially, if they smaller group or how they promote them if at all is a bigger issue.

This is very true, and I will still to this day say that Enhypen should've waited to release Fever and it makes me uncomfortable to watch the music video. However I also have to post out that as a lyOn (OnlyOneOf fan) The explicit choreography move in libidO was actually choreographed my Nine (the one kneeling) himself. He said so on multiple occasions. Most OOO choreographies are choreographed by the members, but they also work with a choreographer. The choreographer originally had Nine grab Love's thigh, but after many practices Nine and Love changed it and got many reactions they liked, and kept doing it their way instead. Also, for their new couple songs (the group of six members is now categorized in three romantic couples portrayed in MVs.) these songs are fully written and produced by the members themselves. Of course they can collaborate with people in their company, but overall it is their art. Even in Rie's song because, he sings the lyrics "call me by your name" which was written my Rie himself I have heard. I think all lyOns I have seen can say that the members seem much happier since their release of the instinct albums. The only member who seemed uncomfortable was Love who eventually left the group before the release of instinct pt.2. Why he decided to change the choreo with Nine we'll never know I guess. But he seemed to have a lot going on in his life at the time and his departure most likely caused by more that just the concept of their group. After all, he did create the songs together with the members.

I wish idols were able to openly say to fans that they're uncomfortable with shipping because many definitly go over the line and take all the fanservice between idols literally. also while I sometimes read fanfiction I have to laugh at people who say '.... probably reads fanfiction about himself and giggles at it'. at the end of the day we don't know idols in real life, but every person has boundaries and we can't assume that everyone is comfortable with fans' work. also 'they ship their ship themselves' is annoying: ho do you know they're enjoying skinship and fanservice and are not being made to do that by the company? it's even more buffling when adult people seriously believe in romantic ships among idols based on exsessive fanservice and a few weird fan edits

Idols should have more control of their wardrobes and more of a say in their choreography, that is absolutely true. They are being over sexualized, absolutely, and I HATE seeing them clearly uncomfortable. While performing they should wear clothes that they feel confidet and comfortable in, and can move in properly. Though, there are idols who like being sexy and like showing off, and can be a real tease, and that is when another issue appears. Infantilization. As an ARMY I am sick of people saying that they don't know what they are doing or that they don't mean it. One of them slipping in a suggestive joke while in a life stream, and suddenly you have a ton of army showing up to say that they don't understand the joke. Those are also the same people who don't want them to be in relationships. It's as though they see them as not mature enough to be in one, and it's damn disturbing. There's two extremes, and I don't like either.

so much fan service makes me uncomfortable, because to me at least, it's obviously forced most of the time, like 98% or something like that idek. like, most male idols being all touchy and stuff is for show and fans will NEVER believe this. this isn't 100% of the time because there are great friendships in groups, but most of the excessive stuff that causes shipping rumors amongst fans is simply fan service, nothing more. i won't name any specific groups or ships based on this, even though it would give more insight into the issue, because no doubt in my mind some fan of them would read it and blow a fuse lol. your oppars aren't dating i promise you this lol

Exactly. I am _very_ much in support of the message of this video, but in that specific case -- and the case of SKZ in general -- they have more freedom and input and control over their own bodies than a lot of other groups do. The wardrobe issues like this are handled fast; we never saw him have that issue again, as the outfit was immediately removed from rotation in that form, and we've seen the same quick dealing with other outfits that have annoyed or discomfited them (especially Lee Know). Several of them occasionally make comments that underline that they have say in what they do and don't expose. It's something I'm always conscious of and grateful for because I know how often other groups don't have that same level of protection. Everyone should have basic control over their bodies, and far far far too many people in the industry don't.

Eventually, we need to agree that this is all a whole systemic issue. On one hand, companies have way too much power over idols, which eventually lead into them being forced to do things they wouldn't want and put into uncomfortable situations. On the other hand, fans are way to used to be entitled to things they should never had. I hope that cases such as Omega X serve as an inflection point for idols to be protected and have more guarantees against any kind of abusive behavior by their employers, and to sign contracts that protect their right to their image and their private life instead of it being straight off handed out to the labels as it is now. But also fans as consumers need to make a change. We can't keep seeing as normal the insane amount of control fans have over idols behavior and abusing their boundaries, as well as realizing the power we have over objectification and sexualization. It will never stop until there isn't a market for it anymore, and we are the target.

As a fan these FF make me feel uncomfortable it must be horrible for idols to read such things about themselves, these FFs should be banned, or should have some limitations at least, so people don't dare to write crap about the idols, just let them live they are humans too.

Wow I've never seen OnlyOneOf on videos of this chanel but here they are here for their concepts I mean I got the point but like it's weird to never speak about them but out of clue include them on a video like this just because of their choreography that they never mention any complain for Which leads me to the conclusion that this chanel knows nothing for the group and their concepts

My first experience with idols came from when I was in my teens and early twenties. Groups like Backstreet Boys, New Kids on the Block, New Edition, Jodeci, NSync, 98 degrees, FIVE, O-Town, Westlife...the list goes on and on...were what I loved to dance to. I adored watching the choreography because every member would dance in sync to the beat of the music in their videos. I didn't go completely crazy with them like wallpapering my room in their posters crazy but I did post one good one on my wall. They played crooner music, great dance beat music, some rap...but the songs were amazing. Fact is, I love all kinds of music but there is a special place in my heart for this brand of sound. Fast forward to the year that EXO released "Don't Mess Up My Tempo" and that was when I bought my first introduction to Kpop cd. I loved what I heard!! Then KZfaq was my access to all KPOP....Then I found JPOP. I remember all the EXILE TRIBE mini groups and I loved every single one!! Curious if there were more to be heard from other countries, I wound up falling in love with Cpop or Mpop (whichever you prefer) and I found the group R1SE, UNIQ, and XNINE. That fueled my interest in Cdramas and Kdramas. We bought our first Netflix subscription one Christmas a few years ago and the world opened up further. Now I listen to all kinds of international pop. I LOVE the groups SB19 and Alamat from the Phillipines or (Fpop). Many actors/actresses from my dramas are also found the pop world...and so I find new and interesting groups to become a fan for. As a 52 year old married mom of two, I can honestly say that I love these pop groups. Now instead of potential boyfriends, I see them as the boys(sons) I never had. Kids that aren't truly mine but I want to support their careers. I want only the best for them in their careers and their own personal lives. I cheer them on all the time. I'm happy to be introduced to newer groups such as T.A.N. and GreatGuys because these kids work hard and I want them to succeed. I'll share their videos on facebook with friends/family who might be interested to get them new fans. I am so happy to still be here enjoying this type of music since the ones I began went silent for a long time. Just recently they have started coming out to tour again. Some are even posting again and sharing pictures or videos with their kids and I am so proud of them for living so well and it makes me happy that they are happy. That's the way I want all their fans to act. To just be happy and proud of these boys who work so hard and put up with so much just to follow their dream. Give them courtesy, show them love, but also let them be the boys they need to be. Let them live their lives the way they want to, don't dictate how someone is to live their life because you would not want to be treated that way. Always remember that golden rule :Treat others as you would wish them to treat you. LOVE and LIGHT!! :)

Female idols go through a lot, of course they get sexualized but I feel like it's way more severe and it's not taken as serious as female idols and that's a problem. Male or female, sexualization is a crime

I agree, I have seen tons of netizens say "Male idols get away with anything and female idols get mistreated blah blah blah'. I get it, females do get mistreated but so does male. Ffs are mostly created about male idols and sometimes they are portraited as abuser, misogynistic etc. Which they might not be in real life. Plus the fact that people rarely talk about male idols outfit problems which doesn't happen with females. When a female gets short skirts, people show concern but when male idols outfits get way more exposing, they say ' give us more'. If a old male talks with a 15 year old female idol, they call it 'gross', but if a old women says do this and that without any limits, it's called fanservice. I have rarely seen female idols do such inappropriate fanservices that males do. Even those males have to interact with female fans without even asking if they are feeling shy or anything. Even in recent days, female obsessive fans do inappropriate accusations just to bring their fav's idol down and people blindly believe it. I am a female but I don't get it why most of the people show less concern to males preference? They are also humans and just because of they males doesn't mean they are gonna be comfortable with anything. I just hate these types of mistreatment from both sides and get angry when one of the genders get ignored for their issues.

the false information on onlyoneof in this video kind of makes the rest of ur research look non credible :/ assuming they’re uncomfortable when they, in fact, made the dance is part of the problem. it’s like when people say female idols “look uncomfortable” when a lot of times they’re the ones choosing the outfit. just because YOU are uncomfortable with it does not mean the idols are. really disappointing

i’m glad i came across this video because you always see ppl speak up about the mistreatment and double standards that female idols go through, but male idols go through the exact same things on a daily yet it’s never taken seriously enough and if we’re being honest, i 100% blame k-pop stan’s for that. kpop stans have created this environment where non poc/non asian people, specially men, feel safe enough to be racist, transphobic, homophobic & xenophobic towards bg members unprovoked with no repercussions as long as they have a gg member in the pfp all in favor of “feminism”.

I agree with everything. The fact about fan service makes me very uncomfortable. I mean, it might be that the idols are truly close to each other but it is not necessary that they are comfortable showing it on camera. We care for our parents but it is not like we love to make a show of it!! Plus all this fan service often leads to toxic shipping, some delusional and unhinged fanfics and some really uncomfortable rumors. These things can make idols awkward and sometimes even affect their frdship! I think idols should be allowed to stay the way they truly are, and not force fan service which will only encourage these delusional fans!! And the objectification!! I have always felt whether BG or GG, the explicit choreos and the outfits of the kids in group to be too uncomfortable!! I am 28 and when I see groups like New jeans and En-hyphen, where there are school kids, made to perform choreos way beyond their age, I can't help but cringe. Ni-ki and Jungwon are 16-17 and 3 members of New Jeans are still not adult with one member being 14!! I do not understand why can't they give them something age appropriate. I wonder what kind of pedophilic audience are appealing to!!

this is why people should do more in depth research before saying something. onlyoneof creates their choreography, they’ve stated that when they do skin ship, or doing an “explicit” dance move they’re comfortable with it and have no problem… dont know why you would down play their work, to say they don’t feel comfortable in doing it. when they’ve said it themselves, that they don’t have a problem with it, and if they would’ve told the company or would’ve left the group completely. and the fact that people mostly pay attention to the queerness part of the groups concept, and say it’s a form of mistreatment, instead of the shit 8d actually does to them is baffling, and that should say something.

their music is god tier. not only for its meaning but for its quality, it’s just straight up magic. dare i say it and no this isn’t up for discussion, they have the most unique, artistic and empowering concept and choreo of the 4th gen. the whole of the 4th gen and that’s not up for discussion bc they deserve recognition. anyway i’m stupidly excited for beat. i have one question tho, why are they in a high school? every other member was outside of school probably in their early 20’s but mill and nine are portraying younger lovers, maybe a bit older than my age. definitely a new take on this whole concept and i’m very excited to see how it plays out. i wonder what track they’ll do a remix of, maybe blOssOm or heartbreak terminal?

Male underage idols are still sexualised. Ni-ki of Enhypen has been sexualised so many times, people even say he doesn't look like he's 16, so what does he suppose to look like, an adult?? He's of my age so I feel extremely bad for him. Ni-ki is sometimes comfortable showing his skin but that doesn't give us the right to sexualise him. Plus Enhypen members rarely do skin ship, and that's why many people say they're not "close enough". This is so wrong. People think you're close only when you're queer baiting or comfortable with skin ship. I'm glad Enhypen members show us their natural side, they don't force themselves to please us. The members have always told how much they love and care for each other but since they're shy they don't show it explicitly. Plus not doing skin ship doesn't mean they have a beef with each other. That's why people doubt their bond so much and always say they're not close enough. Thanks for this video

TOO MUCH, i truly feel like crying whenever i think about this

Wish most people weren't only talking about OnlyOneOf and taking away from the message, we get it. They made the dance themselves and are okay with it, I agree some better research should go into this next time but they do still also have a lot of amazing points that should be discussed. It is terrible idols are pushed to do certain things (or forced) though this doesn't mean every time a male idol is showing skin or hip thrusting that it should be assumed that they hate it. Maybe they do and maybe they don't, we have no idea how they really feel.

the rest of the video has great points but i just can’t get past OOO. every other group they mentioned has a first win, a big company with money and a large fan base. by improperly viewing OOO they risk hurting their image even further (after the whole queerbaiting shtt). it annoys me bc they work so hard and are so passionate towards their craft… and then someone comes in with no research done and devalues all of their art to fan service.

Can we talk about one of the obvious solutions? Stop putting minors under contract. It should be an industry standard that no one can debut until they reach legal age in Korea, which is 19 by international reckoning.
