Good old Air Force 73 years of defending our skies. Even after 73 years they are still the best. Thank you for employing my buddy Jon Sombrero for a decade until his retirement at Shepherd and transfer to the ROTC. GO AIR FORCE!

That first flight at Kill Devil Hills was on December 17th, not the 14th. I'm surprised that there was no mention of Benjamin Folois, the first certified pilot of the Signal Corps, or Lt. Thomas Selfridge, a member of the same training class, who was the first person in history to die in a plane crash. I am proud of my time in Blue. USAF Security Police, 1984, 1988.

I can see the point you are so eloquently making, however, and I must stress this is just my personal opinion, anyone who claims not to be scared of anything or anyone would be either very foolish or a liar, being frightened of a situation or person is the bodies way of heightening the senses and releasing adrenaline and endorphins into the system, giving a burst of energy and strength to allow a person to have a better chance of survival. In no way am I trying to disparage your comment, it’s just my opinion.

I was trying to find some one alive I could get the pictures to. These are fantastic. I found them at a yard sale. I would love to get them to the correct people. I cannot stand seeing these pictures just lying around. I have them mounted. Thank you

A very interesting and informative documentary, thanks for sharing, however I find the title a little confusing, “The United States Air Force 1903-today” but the first powered flight wasn’t until 1903 and most countries didn’t have an Air Arm of their military until either just before or during WWI, and the USAF itself didn’t come into existence until 1947 when they were formed taking over most military flying roles from the USAAF, so, perhaps the title should be “ The United States military flying 1914-Today” or “ United States AirPower 1861-Today”, the second title would then cover the use of balloons, through the Wright brothers, the world wars, the formation of the USAF and beyond. Sorry to be picky but I believe that a better worded title caption is nearly as important as the documentary itself, how often do you get put off watching a documentary/movie because of a rubbish title, only to find out later that it’s a great watch?, personally I have had that happen a fe times. Not wishing to disparage the bravery of Luke, but in my humble opinion shooting down balloons 🎈 is not the same as shooting down aircraft, if only aircraft kills were counted as most air arms did then his record would actually be as average as most. I would repeat though that in no way am I disparaging his, or any other military pilot who engage in air combat, especially during the early years of powered flight when aircraft were “string bags” and killed as many pilots under normal flying conditions, let alone in combat, engines were unreliable, structures not strong enough and safety equipment non-existent, it took true courage just to get into some of the crates that early aircraft manufacturers turned out, but as with so many technologies, War allows fledgling technologies to advance much more quickly than in peacetime. RIP all those airmen killed in both air combat and peacetime, Lest We Forget. Per Ardua Ad Astra.

also if I might add its not really a history of aircraft it is a set of stories of battle. this does not really tell the history

The Air Force is relatively a new phenomenon. This film gives credit to the U.S. for even inventing aviation, by airplanes, vs. other forms of flight, ie. balloons.
