Cannot compare like that. The Chinese HS railway is purely used for passengers transportation only and the routes are freed of railroad crossings and any other possible interruptions. Whereas in many countries in Europe, high speed trains may use existing railroad systems so there are slower freight trains, local trains and railroad crossings. All these will slow down high speed trains. Japanese Shinkansens do not mix with regular local trains, except a small area in northern Japan and are completely freed of railroad crossings.

And in the US the government would have to actually pay the property land owner. Then get through all of the environmental studies, then figure out where the electricity to run the train would be supplied. And, as China is experiencing, compare the cost and speed with air travel since we have airports just about everywhere. Now, the really big question is, who is going to use the service? Great if it is fast between two major population centers, but what about the towns in between? That is one of the major problems with the California project. The towns in between SF and LA would not permit the train to pass unless it stopped for them. Hmmm. We have a LOT of towns that would stop the train for that reason. This is a problem NOT shared by air travel. Oh, and the train would probably need to be elevated to prevent animals from getting on the tracks. And what about all of the existing roads, utilities, pipelines, etc.? And high speed rail does NOT carry freight except a few 'hand carry' packages. So, people passengers only. Lots of problems to implement these in the US. And, having visited China multiple times, the US is very spread out. Not so in China. Farmland and city. High concentration of people. Major difference between the two countries.

I just came back from China. Took two high speed rail rides, from Guangzhou to Beijing and from Beijing back to Guangzhou. Each way: 2100km, 7hr 59min. $137/trip. There are 6 trains each day traveling between the city and they are fully booked a week before the travel date. I don't see why you claimed the Chinese can't afford the fares. These trains were fully loaded.

This issue of affordability was more publicized in the earlier days of HSR in China e.g. when the Wuhan-Guangzhou line opened in 2010, also because it replaced some cheaper, slower trains e.g. overnight ones, but I guess their people's incomes have also increased since then. Personally I also think Beijing-Guangzhou(-& HK?) would be perfect for overnight HSR service

the elephant in the room is that China is a Communist state that operates a centrally planned system. It is not in anyway remotely similar to the Western Capitalist system. Not everything in China is to be assessed in dollars and cents. The central government obligated and has to provide all essential services to its people, transportation being primary. The HSR are all indirectly owed and operated by the Central government and the profitable lines will have to subsidies the lesser viable lines. To this end, the highly profitable Guangzhou to Shanghai to Beijing route will have to help pay for the loss making Xian/Urumuqi. route.This is to ensure that as much of the general population will get to enjoy the use of the HSR. You will also note that the popular routes are priced much higher than the lesser routes for exactly the same reason. Just a point analysis, has Amtrak ever made a profit? Its very existence is based entirely on the subsidy and handouts from the US government. Without which, Amtrak will not be in existence at all. If the CCP is wrong to subsidies the HSR, it is right for the US Congress to continue financial handouts to Amtrak?

The Northeast Corridor (Washington DC to Boston) makes money. The other trains, not so much. Many people, maybe most people, use Amtrak as a "land cruise," taking the trains to see the country rather than go somewhere for business. Chicago to LA is days by car or train, and a few hours by plane, so why train?

@@ShroomKeppie... People drive in US since upon arrival in new city they'll need a car anyway to get around. If they took train they'd have to find a car rental place and waste 2 hours and blow $200 more. Unlike Europe or China with subways and dense walkable cities. Till we totally change US cities a train in US will not be used my most. Here Minneapolis to Chicago is 6 hours, even if 3 hour train existed most would want a car so just will drive and save $200 car rental upon arrival and the $100 train ticket for each family member. Trains really are dumb idea in US despite what train lovers claim, most people are fine driving...

... China building high speed rail, and airports and airplanes is wasteful. Building 2 options to do the same basic thing is the definition of wasteful. Its weird how people think trains are so much better than fast planes which we ve had since 1960. And with hiways really there is 3rd option to cross between big cities. I expect soon China and Europe will find a 4th travel option to waste tax money on. Then a 5th. Govt finds new things to spend money on... . . In Russia they mostly use plane to connect cities, no hiways, no fast trains and they find planes are great...

I experienced high-speed train ride in China back in 2014 and it was an amazing experience. I was very fortunate that the foreign money exchange rate was favorable back then so I can afford to travel 4 high-speed train trips (Beijing to Xian both ways, Beijing to Shenyang and Shenyang to Shanghai). But now the exchange rate is not favorable compared to back then and high speed train travel isn't as economical as the last time I was in China because of this. You have a good point that they should discount the high-speed train travel to less popular routes and make high-speed train travel more affordable. Or alternatively the routes that travels at max 160, 200 and 250km/hr should be discounted accordingly. That should do the trick.

... Fuel is only 20% of cost of flying. With cars fuel is even less, 10% of annual cost of car. It's sorta weird how fuel is so cheap. Fuel can double in price and still not be main part of cost to travel. And planes can just fly a bit slower and save fuel a bit... Basically planes are pretty awesome and US need not build trains. Russia also is fine with just planes and not even much hiways, planes really do most of what travel is needed.. China totally will now subsidize air travel and let their trains rot and sit idle, their govt wants flashy planes now, the trains will be abandoned and forgotten like the US ripped out it's streetcars when cars came along...

@ricosun
@ricosun Жыл бұрын
The analysis is flawed. 1. There are different prices for different classes of High Speed Trains in China. The fastest 400 km/h+ is the most expensive, there are 300km/h, 250 km/h and 160 km/h trains that cost significantly cheaper. 2. You should not use China's median income to guage its affordability, this is because China has very large income discrepency between, tier 1 and lower tier cities especially rural towns and areas. These High Speed Trains are really targetted at inter-capital city travel for business or higher income population. There is 1.4 Billion people in China, there is significant population in each income bracket for high, medium and low income earners. Each income bracket has about 200-300 million people. You simplying cannot say its a problem because it is expensive for median income earners, when there is 200 million high income earners that find prices reasonable. Finally high speed train is a very good alternative to inter-city flying, because tickets prices are slight cheaper, and you get to your distination faster. This is because airports are often located outside the city centre, and you have do waste time check in. Whereas high speed train station are located in city centers and check in process is much faster. Also profitability of high speed train runs at a loss is on purpose. This is because the amount of economic activity that it drives from additional business development, tourism far outweight the loss. These high speed trains basically links up rich and poor areas together, combining a hugh market for trade and development, acting as a catalyst for further economic development.

Apple Daily did a comparison that indeed because of this, it takes about the same duration to travel from HK to Guangzhou via either high-speed or normal-speed train, as the former stops @ Guangzhou S station that 17km further out from downtown Guangzhou. Heard Guangzhou S station is positioned there to hopefully catalyze more developed in the then less populated Panyu district that it is in. Smaller cities en-route HSR lines between major cities in mainland China may also have their stations further from their downtowns I heard, so that the lines can be straighter. As for Japan their normal-speed trains use narrower track gauge that'd be too unstable for HSR I think, so their _shinkansen_ can't share tracks with normal-speed trains, & probably some cities have land constraints & thus lack space for additional dedicated HSR track, & thus the HSR station has to be placed further away from downtown. An extreme example is shin-Hakodate-Hokuto station which is as far from downtown Hakodate as Guangzhou S station is from downtown Guangzhou, as Hakodate is located along a bay but the HSR line runs further inland en-route from Honshu to Sapporo further north (meanwhile Hakodate's downtown normal-speed main train station has to be served by a spur rail line from the older normal-speed Hakodate Main Line that also runs parallel to the HSR, going north to Sapporo too)

There are also differences in income in the other countries mentioned. Therefore the comparison is fair by using the average income in each location. Of course the extent of the income gap in China is a whole other issue. But the argument holds true: It's too expensive for the average citizen.

@@globeex not sure how useful is your conclusion "too expensive for the average citizen". You can also make the argument that an iPhone is also too expensive for the average citizen, but so what?

You are comparing luxury goods to transportation (basic needs). That's just ridiculous.

On KZfaq, at least half of the videos about China's high-speed rail are about how to lose money. These people will always focus on whether it is profitable as the main reference point. They will never pay attention to how much the opening of these high-speed rail lines will improve the local people, the local government, and the entire country's economy. The government cannot invest in all public facilities in pursuit of profits, otherwise China will be the next United States. And the most important point is that no one needs to worry about China’s hundreds of millions of middle-class people traveling on high-speed rail and being unable to afford the fare.

The argument of the video is that the ticket price is too high for the average Chinese citizen. The video is not about the system losing money.

$900 billion spent, $40 million loss per day, route designed for 50 trains run 3. All these for a rosy GDP. some routes can’t even pay their electric bill. heh. heh. heh.

You are mistaken. At China's fare levels, which are actually low by international standards, the first 40 fares on a 450 passenger train will pay the electrical bill. Try to buy a ticket on most lines and you will see that occupancy ratio is high and trains are frequent and often sold out.

There are countless of public statistics available.

Just like every other country, there is a huge variance, but the stated average is approximately correct. I know a few people that earn 400 - 600 dollars a month (also a very common income for the eastern block countries) and I know people earning 7000 dollars per month. Unfortunately, the legal minimum wage stipulated by local government in each province is so low that even a company offering 100% more per month is seen as an attractive prospect. When you consider that the minimum wage in Beijing is only 2200 renminbi, a 3800 per -month job looks pretty attractive. That attitude of course, only works by comparison. It's like saying that last year your company made 1 dollar profit but this year we made 2 dollars profit and you try to sell it to an investor on the proviso your profits have doubled. I don't know how the minimum wage is calculated but I would assume that it factors in a shared dormitory with daily food costs of around 12+22+22.
